art by @greenmutt this inspired one of the scenes in my Embrace fan fiction. Here's a short snippet. Please enjoy. -- Darklysong
The Bog King guided the blindfolded fairy who shivered in the cold of the late afternoon. The changing of the seasons was upon them; any sensible creature would be half way to the south or hibernating in the underground while Mistress Frost roamed the lands. Silvermas was only two days away but only the winter fey celebrated it the Dark Forest.
"Where are we?" demanded his pugnacious guest in her damp clothes stamping her feet to get warm. "I'm freezing my wings off!" Even with Bog's winter coat hugging her slim form, she was still cold but she was determined to see her first ever winter day. Marianne remember the stories her mother, Lyris, had told her as a child about the winters of her youth in the northern Feylands where she was born. Marianne wanted to know everything about the mother she lost to the sickness and this was one way to do it. King Dagda had forbade any contact with the North Court since the Goblin Wars two hundred years ago. Anything that reminded him of his beloved wife was locked away forever. They say that Dagda's brown hair turned white with grief at learning of Lyris's death by young Roland, a scout in the army.
"I only want you to have the best perch to see what you've been pestering me to see since summer began!" the goblin king growled.
Bog lend her by the hand up the tree knots and telling her where the best holds were for her feet as they slowly made their way into the high branches. Her purple butterfly wings were already too damp for flying in the cool air: so inch by inch, Bog walked the blighted pest of royal fairie brat as best he could to their destination.
"Can I look now?" Marianne huffed, trying not to let the exertion show to the proud goblin but he chuckled none the less at her labored breaths.
"Not used to walking, Miss High and Mighty, are we?" Bog tugged at her hand.
"I can outfly you any day of the year ... that is if I could right now." Marianne said, crossly. Who knew that winter ... would be so cold. She was lead along a branch and she felt Bog's chitin hands steady her.
Impatiently, the fairy princess tugged off the blindfold and scanned the horizon for her winter wonderland of her dreams. The snow fell like cotton down from a dandelion in summer; the whole Dark Forest was starting to be pinto-patched in endless white.
".... it's ..." Marianne was at a loss for words as she gazed out at her first snowfall of her long fey life. Until now she only knew the warmth of spring, the heat of summer, and the crispy cool of autumn. This was her first snowfall she'd ever seen and... she had risked her father's anger ordering her royal entourage to wait for her until she saw it. Father would be cross but she would risk her wings breaking in the cold to see this. Migration would wait.
There were no words to describe the indescribable to new eyes drinking in the cold, brisk air and she listened very carefully she could hear the snow fall. So this is what Mother's world would be like ... "it's ..."
Bog gave her a nod. " ... I know ..."
The pair stood in silence. There was nothing to say but the silence embracing them as a friend.
