Falling

On the downside of summer, the emergence

of cooler days looms like fruit ripe for picking,

the emotional inverse of spring, simply waiting

for something different, anything but extremes.

Holding our breath for three months, sweating

through our shirts, worshipping air conditioning

like religion, slowly melting through a mercurial

waste-scape that seemed almost unsurvivable.

At last the sun angles down to where it belongs

as if God adjusted the tilt of his eternal spotlight

to stop glaring at us with 100 degree intensity,

its warming, goldilocks glow finally stabilizing.

Cut to: walking in the afternoon, backyard fires,

dry nights free of unending hum—just crickets,

a breeze, and the taper-edge hint of a chill that,

like a silent black cat, portends darkness arriving.

Sudden Fall

Autumn came like a tiger

bursting from the brush,

all the heat was blown away,

the birds left in a rush.

The summer flowers wilted,

the bees died in their nests,

and mice rushed into toasty homes

like uninvited guests.

The skies were blue like crystal,

the leaves were turning brown,

chrysanthemums in pots appeared

on every porch in town.

The summer died so quickly,

we don’t know where it went,

but not a sweaty soul complained,

for everyone was spent.

The chilly days of Autumn

had finally come at last;

I only hope that Winter

doesn’t hit us just as fast—
