Something I really enjoy about “As I Lay Dying” is that Cash and Jewel—who Addie was most fond of compared to her other children—are the only ones with names that represent concrete value. They are money and precious stones respectively. Meanwhile, Darl and Dewie Dell and Vardaman—who Addie only bore begrudgingly/as penance for her adultery—are not allotted that same purpose. They do not matter to her (or to anyone besides themselves) and that reality is reflected in ways as fundamental to their identities as their names. Ugh. I sincerely enjoyed my time reading this book.
