as-Salamu Alaykum. Did Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani and Shaykh Mawlay Arabi ad-Darqawi who both lived in Fez at the same time for about 20 years ever meet or have any kind of contact with each other, it seems strange that despite these circumstances that they both lived there lives as if the other never existed. In reading Aisha Bewley's translation of Shaykh ad-Darqawi's letters there are several that warn people not to associate with "People of Claims" is this a reference to Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani?
There is no known evidence regarding any meeting or contact between Shaykhunā at-Tijānī and Sīdī al-ᶜArabī ad-Darqāwī, may Allāh be pleased with them both.
However, Shaykhunā at-Tijānī, may Allāh be pleased with him, had met the latter's shaykh, Sīdī ᶜAlī al-Jamāl during his first trip to Fez, and had learned the the science of Letters [ᶜilmuᵓl-ḥurūf] from him. He left him afterwards.
Shaykhunā at-Tijānī, may Allāh be pleased with him, operated from the city of Fez while Sīdī al-ᶜArabī ad-Darqāwī was outside the city. When Sulṭān Mawlay Sulaymān had arrested Sīdī ad-Darqāwī for his anti-state activity, Shaykhunā at-Tijānī, may Allāh be pleased with him, had asked the Sulṭān to release him.
The taṣawwuf of the two was quite different as well. Shaykhunā at-Tijānī, may Allāh be pleased with him, did not agree with the Darqāwī emphasis on outward poverty and asceticism (e.g. carrying begging bowls, hanging rosaries around the neck). The Tijāniyya do not perfom hardcore dhikr exercises [ḥaḍarāt] like the Darqāwiyya, either.
Sīdī ad-Darqāwī's emphasis was on the Supreme Name "Allāh". Shaykhunā at-Tijānī (RA) instructed his students to focus on the Manifestation of the Name Sayyidinā Rasūluᵓllāh ﷺ, via Ṣalātuᵓl-Fātiḥī.
Needless to say, Sīdī ad-Darqāwī remained a subject of the Quṭbaniyya of Shaykhunā at-Tijānī, may Allāh be pleased with him.
