Darren, a consummate professional, isn't going to come onto a young omega's team and put him on his knees the first time he acts up. Not even if his position as a senior, experienced alpha would allow him that privilege. He wouldn't even scruff Jannik for comfort because he understands the implications that could add to the the coach-player dynamic, especially if anyone outside the team, outside the understanding of what a coach and player mean to each other, saw them doing that. No, if Jannik wants to be scruffed it's Jannik who is going to ask for it. The first time it happens is after a frustrating match that leaves Jannik restless, dissatisfied. He was short with the team all through debrief and now has been pacing the hotel suite for the better part of twenty minutes. Darren has stopped trying to talk him down from it and is instead watching and waiting until Jannik tells him what he needs. It takes another few minutes until Jannik turns and walks towards Darren who stands to meet him. There is no hesitation from Jannik when he drops his head to Darren's shoulder, but his voice is tentative when he asks "Will you? My Neck?". It only takes ten minutes for Darren to calm Jannik down fully. From there the progression and frequency of scruffing evolves on it's own. Darren gets better at reading and pre-empting when Jannik might need his attention and Jannik blossoms under the guidance and care. I didn't add this to the original post but I was also imagining scruffing as team boding-- Darren and Jannik wrestling with each other when Jannik is pleased and bubbly from a good training session, needling Darren until he gets chased and wrestled and scruffed so he can come down laughing with Darren's hands and attention securely on him. A heat though.. Jannik goes through a number of heats while he works with Darren and for none of those does he ask for help. Cincinnati changes this. A flash heat and a humiliating retirement leave Jannik without his safe guards and as soon as they're tucked away in a private physio room Jannik is reaching, grasping for Darren telling him "Please, please Darren it hurts". Darren offers him everything else at first: ice packs, ice water, a heat aid he can buy, an alpha he can call, but Jannik shakes his head every time and stares imploringly at Darren. "I have nothing else to give you mate" Darren says, but Jannik takes his hand and tugs it to the back of his neck "This. You give me this". And Darren shouldn't but Jannik looks so awful, utterly defeated, that he gives in and squeezes down around Jannik's neck. Jannik's whole body stiffens and then let's go with a whimpering sigh that Darren can feel under his finger tips. Darren can smell Jannik too, slicking up as he applies pressure to his scent glands. He shouldn't. He really, really shouldn't, but Jannik is peering up at him from under tear-clumped lashes, pupils blooming just like the blush high on his cheekbones. He looks as feverish as Darren feels. "Please." Darren can't say no.
