Unfortunately, yeah, ferrets smell pretty bad. Careful with rabbits too (as one person commented) since they can live for over a decade and actually require a lot of work unless you have a lot of space for a huge crate.
I was hoping for something that I could let roam free... but I guess that's probably not the best idea with a rabbit... peeps have recommended hairless cats but those fuckers are terrifying so...
