"Fa La La" - by Elizabeth Chan (lizchanmusic)
So I'm driving down the road, and I'm tuning out the radio because it's Christmas music and it's not Mannheim, Straight No Chaser, or Christmas Eve Sarajevo, so I had it tuned out, till I heard the word "Dreidel" and perked up... what was that?
Watch the Dreidel spin, children win win win,
Tales of miracles, keep the tradition,
And though the days are sure, we celebrate the nights,
Menorahs show a festivle of lights,
All the boys and girls, count the candy gelt,
Love eight days of wonder, why not twelve?
At which point it segued back to Christmas, though Hanukkah Harry popped up a couple more times in the video, cavorting with Santa. It's... something I guess. It's catchy, and it's Chanukah on the radio at the Holidays, so there's that, also it's by a woman of color, with a racially diverse video cast... which is nice, though I note all the female dancers are white....
Also the artist seems to be hung up on the idea of Chanukah as "Jewish Christmas" and if I heard that last line right, kind of dismisses it all with "well we have more days," which is kind of not true... really, aside from that one Christmas Carol...
BUT, it's not my place to say if any of this makes it good or bad. I can see obvious problems but also it's Chanukah representation in a barren waste thereof, so it bears discussion and I can't find it mentioned yet on tumblr... so... Jewish people of Tumblr, what's your take? Jacob?
