send me an au and i’ll give you 5+ headcanons about it

 - they meet in a ptsd group meeting. fred’s a survivor who’s been going to meetings for months, and angel just got there and he’s not even sure what he’s supposed to do in there. but he listens to her talk and her story and he feels so much for her. she’s the only person he talks to after the meeting is over. basically only time he even opens his mouth that night.

 - they take things very, very slowly. angel bc it’s the only way he knows how, and fred bc she has Responsibilities™ and she’s kind of reluctant to be in a relationship in that point of her life. they both almost call it quits like 10 times before their 3rd date bc they’re never 100% sure, but then they go out again and have a really great time and it’s so Soft so they keep going back for more.

 - angel was married before ((darla)) but it didn’t work. fred wasn’t. she was engaged for a long time with the father of her kid before he passed. it’s difficult for both of them to talk about their previous relationships, so they agree to just ignore it, and act like it’s their first relationship ever - fred’s idea. in many ways it does feels like it. and judging by angel’s awkwardness, she’d never have guessed it wasn’t angels first relationship if he hadnt told her.

 - it takes a while, but after the first time fred invites angel to her house, he never leaves. he’s never been anywhere more comfortable in his life. fred thinks it’s just words but it’s like Home to him, everything about it. the smell, the warmth, the noises, fred’s Food. i mean, sure, he was at war for a long while, so everything would feel like heaven in comparison but this is different. this is the real deal.

 - fred hadnt really left home for a long time before angel came around. like, she’d go to meetings, and she’d go see her kid perform at school, and drop him off wherever he needed to go and that was pretty much it, but after angel she goes out a lot?? everyday it’s like a new adventure, and she drags her boys with her every single time. she smiles more in a day with them than she had Years before that.

same!! i adore their relationship so much and it’s one of my favourite relationships on the show. it’s quite sad that it mostly goes ignored or forgotten in fanwork & meta in my experience because it’s so interesting

it’s much more understated than e.g. shaw/root or shaw & reese but these two do genuinely care for each other so deeply even if they’re both the kind of person who’s not great at showing it

there’s a lot of small, sweet moments that showcase that! harold remembering sameen’s favourite sandwich order to the letter and getting it for her to cheer her up when samaritan developments ground her to the subway, or shaw telling him “you can’t go, we just got you back” with her voice as close as she gets to emotional, when finch is about to go all self-sacrificial again

i think these two show love and affection in a very similar way, through a strong protective instinct and a general “hey, however you are is fine with me” attitude when it comes to people they love, and that’s why they don’t really need grand gestures and big speeches like root does or the constant affectionate needling and poking like john does to show affection or make it clear they like each other

they know they’re friends and they don’t have to prove that to each other and i think that’s a very beautiful thing, and the way their relationship relaxes bit by bit and goes from suspicion on sameen’s end and worry on harold’s to the easy, companionable dynamic full of jokes and implicit unspoken “i trust you”s later on is just a joy to watch

11. “I almost lost you” kiss

“Don’t sit up,” Finch cringed as Reese ignored him, struggling upright.

“Where’s Root?” Reese asked.

“Cleaning up,” he answered, and having given up on getting Reese to lie down, he helped him up instead.

Reese looked ready to say something so he leaned in and kissed him. Reese responded eagerly. When Finch pulled away, Reese shot him a puzzled look.

“I almost lost you, Mr. Reese.”

“We have to find Shaw,” Reese replied.

“I know that’s not going to stop you from looking for Ms. Shaw,” Finch looked at him, hoping he could read the plea on his face, “I’m hoping it keeps you from being so reckless in doing so.”

Before Reese could respond, Root appeared from the subway’s bathroom. Reese figured since he hadn’t actually promised Finch anything, it wouldn’t really being breaking it to do whatever it took to get Shaw back.

see, i can’t tell. i think that’s a testament to the quality of the writers bc everyone is really well developed. if i had to pick one of the main characters it’d probably be joss?? but only because i don’t rewatch the early seasons as often as i do 3-5? but i still love her
