sometimes i’m really amazed how hard they cooked with delgado!master even though technically his character concept wasn’t even that complicated. i feel like these days people really like villains with complex and tragic backstories so that’s what media lean towards, and they did it with the master in new who as well - with the drums for example, or by making missy more sympathetic. and it’s not like there’s anything wrong with that, but i really adore how they were able to set up such an interesting dynamic between the doctor and the master at the very beginning with a relatively simple concept.

like all we really knew about the master back then was that he’s the doctor’s intellectual equal and that they were former friends. and this immediately gave their relationship a specific context that set them apart from other villains in the show. like we can just see that despite them being enemies, there’s always respect for each other and it feels like they don’t truly want to kill each other, they just enjoy the challenge of the fight. we can see they are similar in many ways and the remains of their friendship are still there. the master asks the doctor to rule the galaxy together. the doctor visits the master in prison even after all the bad things he’s done purely because the doctor is worried about him and wants to see him. the master wasn’t just another random evil alien, this person meant something to the doctor and that informed all their encounters.

obv i love all the doctor/master dynamics, but there’s just something special about three and delgado that they will never be able to replicate.

Biting his lower lip, cursing, he came in that eager mouth. The aftershocks shuddered through him as the Doctor drained him dry, whining when the Master pulled out. “Greedy,” he chided, panting. He doubted the Doctor had heard or understood; his too dark pupils were blown, mayfly attention already swinging back to the Master's past self. While the Master caught his breath, he watched the two younger Time Lords scrabble for each other in a desperate, heaving morass of heat and — oh that little yelp the Doctor made in this body, yes, he'd quite forgotten. It was all very charming, he mused in a delighted post-coital haze. As he watched, he could feel the phantom sensations of his timeline rearranging itself to align present to past. The theoretics didn't feel so lofty when his body catalogued every past sensation as new information, nerves humming with stimuli, with the feel of the Doctor's skin, of the film of sweat on his shoulder, the way he moaned as the skin there was mouthed.

and some actual plot, back on Gallifrey:

Direct contact in the presence of others was considered something of a faux pas on Gallifrey, where it was already so difficult to drown out the tedious thoughts of thousands of Time Lords. Even still, he was amused as the Doctor leaned over in the middle of the briefing to surreptitiously hiss under his breath, “You dosed me with neurotoxin?” “Not just you,” he chided, barely moving his lips. The Doctor breathed out sharply. Perhaps a scoff. “I anticipated the effects,” he added. “Time is so fragile these days.” Now the Doctor cast him a sideways glance. “Master,” he hissed. The Master’s mouth curved into a little smile, somewhat against his will. It was difficult not to remember the Doctor in his third regeneration, screaming out his name for the first time. Rewriting time had been very worth it, if only for extracting that particular agony from the Doctor.

essentially, at the end of that fic, Three makes a decision to quite literally turn left instead of right at the fork, but... what if they had turned right :)

The Doctor had noticed the subtle tremor to the Master’s hand, the way his body didn’t quite radiate the normal amount of heat. He himself felt drained and shaken, as though he’d had several units of blood taken. Psychically, he supposed it was as apt a metaphor as any. They could use a nightcap, the both of them. Something to put the colour back in their cheeks. HQ had been cleared of any and all personnel until they had either given the all-clear or, in the worse case scenario, a quarter of a day had elapsed. He flicked his wrist up to check his watch, the action now reflexive in its compensation for his dulled senses: they still had several hours until daybreak. No one need ever know. “Come on,” he said, the weariness of the past week bleeding into bluntness. “We’ve time for a drink.” Testament to his own exhaustion, the Master chose not to utter a biting insult under the guise of polite inquiry. Instead, he gave the sigh of an exhausted bloodhound, and relied on the Doctor’s light course corrections to direct them both, while acting as though he were the one leading the Doctor. The presumption ought to have galled the Doctor, but he, too, felt so indisposed that he was unable to summon his usual pretence around the other man, glad enough that were both alive and for the grounding reality of the Master’s arm entwined in his own.
