Oh what? I’m doing Sengoku BASARA stuff again?

I wanted to make more retainers (and frankly more male characters because while I do love drawing the ladies I wanted to get some practice in. I made a basic design in Picrew and was like “oh hey I’ll make a full character out of this.”)

Shiroishi Munezane was a retainer of Date Masamune. Here I depict him as slightly younger than Kojuro. A weary, snarky archer who wields a Daikyu (a Japanese longbow) and enjoys frequently smoking a Kiseru pipe. Also he can breathe fire. Usually through the pipe.

His combat style involves combustive arrows, rapid-fire and AoE attacks, allowing him to specialize in flushing out enemies and forcing tight groups to scatter. In close-quarters, he has a tantou he can pull out, and can also use his daikyu as a blunt weapon. If you’ve ever played Guild Wars 2, try the longbow skills on the Warrior and Ranger classes. It’s like that, but faster-paced because it’s Basara.

Maybe this is the result of me not being a longtime player, but there's a great deal about the Date family that never quite adds up to me.

Terumune in particular is an enigma. He's seen so rarely that it's hard to get a real grasp of his relationships with his wife and children. Has he come to love Yoshihime, I wonder, or does he merely respect her role as his wife and the mother of their children?

And how much did he know about Yoshihime's abuse of Masamune? Her contempt for her eldest child appears to have been open and unrestrained. It's not clear to me that Terumune ever attempted to put a stop to it. Did he see it as a necessary toughening up, or as simply out of his hands?

One of the neatest things I've learned from my latest round of research ahead of putting together a new Unseen Japan article is that in the Edo period, you'd know the Date daimyo's procession on sight, from a distance. It was the one daimyo procession allowed to keep their guns live during sankin-kōtai. So, they'd be trailing matchlock smoke.

(OC) Yoshihime

Yoshihime, also known as Masamune's living nightmare, she's the infamous mother of the one-eyed dragon. A dark user coming from the proud Mogami Clan, to which she is still incredibly loyal. She shares many interests with her brother Yoshiaki, current head of the Clan, and often works as a mediator for the Mogami interests in Oshuu and, of course, as a spy.

Despite being in love with her late husband, Terumune, her loyalty to her brother has always prevailed. She also doesn't seem to be on good terms with her son Masamune, being brought up with the idea of protecting the clan from the possibile threat of the Mogami. Despite of that, Masamune has indeed inherited something from her, most notably their curiosity towards Foreign cultures.

Me: "YES, I AM LISTENING”

Dunno why, whenever someone says that some Sengoku lord likes poetry, dance, or painting or whatever, I’m like “YES, TELL ME MORE”.

Also, if the host is to be believed, then Masamune was an emo kid when he was younger. I’ll be damned, SLBP has a point! Though he did eventually grow up to be Nobunaga v2/Ikesen Masa, so there’s that.
