@frosty-viking just pointed out to me that the Red Lion was damaged in Keith's fight against Zarkon, which means that he can't rely on the Lion for escape wherever he ends up stranded

02 ♛ Headcanon
LITTLE KIDS ;
Cool, collected, and aloof as he may be, Riku has a soft spot for the little children around the island. Seeing as how he isn't on best terms with his own mother and father, he pines for the days when he could talk to them without feeling judged, or without feeling he has let them down. Ever since he had left the islands in his pursuits for tainted power, his father and -- to a certain degree-- his mother have silenced all communication with their only son. Now, as he sees the little islanders prance around the sand and shores, he hopes that their relations with their families won't turn out as strained and broken as his own.
While he certainly admires them (and finds himself breaking into a smile when he sees them playing with one another) Riku doesn't exactly 'read' kids well. He'll stare at them too observantly, or his glance in offering them their ball back might come across as too intimidating. In other words, his way of handling them still comes off as rather cold, and he has gained the reputation of being the 'scary guy' who lives on the edge of town.
To make matters worse, he is a horrible babysitter -- when a toddler starts crying, he'll freak and call up Kairi or (dare he say it!?) Selphie for help. Even just holding a baby or kid is enough to make them cry; probably because they can sense how tense and nervous he is.
Hence, Riku and little kids have a love-hate relationship . . .
