“This is perfect,” Riley agreed, holding the little outfit in her hands. It was a tiny baby-sized three-piece suit that she had specifically ordered for her little brother for when he was a bit older. With how busy her mother was, she wanted to take care of something for their wedding. As good as the palace stylists were at doing their job, there was nothing like a personal touch to make everything more special. Besides, she had volunteered to be Devon’s babysitter during the first day and they had to match.
She placed the outfit down when she heard the door open and turned around, her eyes widening when she spotted her mother’s fiancé. “Prince David,” she greeted, doing a little curtsy as greeting. Riley wasn’t quite sure if they were family enough to excuse formalities so she stuck with what would make her more likeable to the man.

In the consortium of faces old and new it was always a delight to find a friend. Friend, of course, might be a stretch — they were different personalities, but they had known each other since childhood and with the ties of this society will long know each other until one crumbles into dust. They had chosen different paths in life, but now they gathered in the same hallowed hall for the same purpose. Once customary greetings were aside, she went on to business. “What do you think of this newest batch of initiates?” she asked the novelist. “Have you met any that have struck your interest?”

Julian was always one with a destination in mind, never wandering aimlessly — and so he did that night, in London, as he walked purposefully from the nearest Fortnum & Mason to his flat — but that didn’t mean he couldn’t take detours. He came across a familiar figure sitting upon the streetside seats of a café, and he walked over to him, smiling widely. “David, right?” he greeted the other. He knew he and his husband were friends, to some degree, and they had met each other quite a few times now. “Mind if I take this seat?” He was carrying a load of reusable bags, far too many for his comfort. “I just need — a little bit of a break.”

It had been a long, pleasant night, and Sebastian was still slightly buzzed when he arrived back at the estate in the early hours of the morning. He kicked off his shoes at the door and walked, zombie-like and with his eyes half lidded towards his bed. The exhaustion was quickly creeping up on him and Sebastian knew that as soon as his body hit the bed he’d be out completely for at least a solid six hours. He didn’t even bother to get out of his clothes, only face planted into the comforter as he started to drift off.
Then, like the incessant ticking of a clock, a sound made itself apparent. A heartbeat, slow and steady, the resting heartbeat of a predatory animal. His eyes snapped open, immediately focusing in on the source: his closet. It was dark, but Sebastian had no trouble seeing clearly through it, his pupils dilating in an effort to catch even the smallest movement. He didn’t say a word, only waited for something to happen.

When he saw David roaming around outside the house, he’d figured the man was merely exploring his new surroundings, getting the lay of the land. However, not ten minutes later, he returns with a handful of tulips of various colours, bundled together in a makeshift bouquet. Nick blinks at him without understanding his intent. “Those are nice. Are you planning to keep some in a vase?” David did seem to have an affection for plants.
