Such a great book about growing up gay and goth in a small town. So many stories and situations reminded me of my growing up experience.

Bad Kid: A Memoir on Growing Up Goth & Gay in Texas
Bad Kid: A Memoir on Growing Up Goth and Gay in Texas details growing up gay in conservative San Antonio, Texas during the late '80s/early '90s. Growing up gay tough, but David Crabb finds acceptance among drug-fueled goth kids. Even if you don’t think you’re likely to be interested in the memoir of a drug-addled gay goth kid from Texas, rest assured that ultimately this is a coming of age/coming out story and unlike any other you’ve probably read.
David Crabb describes various mortifying details of his awkward adolescence, no matter how embarrassing. His stories are hilarious and touching at the same time, similar to the style of David Sedaris. Crabb also has an expert ability to perfectly capture and share all the other characters in his life. If you have a fond nostalgia for the 1980s/1990s, like I do, you are especially going to love all the references to the music, fashion, and pop culture.
Come to the dark side and immerse yourself in a chaotic life lived with clueless and sometimes mean family members, deeply troubled friends, and a community steeped in hate. Underneath it all you will find a ‘bad kid’ who just wants to be loved and accepted. I give Bad Kid 5 out of 5 wine glasses as a truly captivating read and since I could identify on many levels with the author.
Is life hard? Try being a gay goth in Texas. Bad Kid: A Memoir, by David Crabb, new from Harper Perennial is hilarious and touching.
