Dining Room or There is Nothing (Dir.: David Earle, 2006)
In 1991, David Earle, president of Kid Vid Warriors (also known as Kid Video Warriors), began contacting newspapers with the declaration that July 8th would henceforth be known as Video Games Day, a day for kids worldwide to celebrate video games and “thank their parents for all the cartridges and quarters they have provided”. Earle continued to advertise and sponsor the date up through 1996, though the date shifted repeatedly during this time, and has continued to do so after Earle’s name was no longer associated with the occasion.
Any further documentation of either Earle or Kid Vid(eo) Warriors has yet to be discovered, and was likely meager to begin with; the 1994 edition of Raleigh, North Carolina’s News and Observer carrying his announcement refers to the organization as “something called Kid Video Warriors”. But their legacy continues in hashtag form every July 8, July 12, September 10, and September 12 around the world. Fortunately, the historical contributions of RCA engineer Joe Weisbecker (1932-1990) are better protected. Weisbecker invented an 8-bit microcomputer architecture that would serve as the foundation of RCA’s future microprocessor business. During the 1970s, he contributed to the development of RCA’s programmable video game and educational systems: FRED, STUDIO II, STUDIO III, and STUDIO IV, and Microtutor. He is also the father of Joyce Weisbecker, the first female commercial video game designer and first indie game developer. These ca. 1977 photographs document some of his contributions to technology and gaming history.
