G.F. Handel, “Va tacito” aria from Giulio Cesare in Egitto, HWV 17, Sarah Connolly, mezzo-soprano, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, William Christie, cond.
This is David McVicar’s production of the opera at the Glyndebourne Festival, where he updated the setting from ancient Rome to imperial Britain, drawing a parallel between Egypt’s status as a vassal kingdom under Rome and as a protectorate under Britain after the Anglo-Egyptian War in 1882. In Handel’s time, Caesar would’ve been sung by a castrato, but nowadays the role is played by mezzo-sopranos or counter-tenors.
In case you haven’t heard—but who hasn’t heard?—HE’S BACK.
Glyndebourne is streaming Giulio Cesare for free for a week starting tomorrow, Sunday, August 9, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. BST.
This is the 2005 McVicar production starring Sarah Connolly, Danielle de Niese, Christophe Dumaux, Angelika Kirschlager, Patricia Bardon, Christopher Maltman, and Rachid Ben Abdeslam.
