The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) I’m not going to offer a summarization here (just read the one over at 1000 Misspent Hours for all the details) but these chosen screen grabs kind of serve that function. What’s deceiving here is that these screen grabs might leave the impression that ‘The Sword and the Sorcerer’ was a more exciting and interesting film than it actually is.  I originally saw this film in theaters in 1982 when I was 8 years old and I haven’t viewed it since, that is until I recently acquired a copy.  (A quick aside: 1982 was an incredible year for movie lovers. This was the year of ‘Blade Runner’, ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’, ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’, ‘Poltergeist‘, ‘Tron’, ‘The Dark Crystal’ for some A list films and B movies like ‘The Beastmaster’, ‘Xtro’, ‘Conan the Barbarian’, ‘Swamp Thing’, and one of my favorite films John Carpenter’s, ‘The Thing’.) I was curious to see how the movie encountered by my 8 year old self would fair with contemporary me. Answer? Not so well. My memory of ‘The Sword and the Sorcerer’ involved more action, more gore, and more T&A. My memory didn’t recall all the references to women as “wenches” or how boring the action sequences were and re-watching diminished any fondness I might have once felt for this movie. (A highlight remains Richard Moll’s evil Xusia of Delos. Given limited screen time, Moll manages to make his character creepy and threatening. I still kind of dig his introductory sequence, displayed above, involving a witch summoning Xusia from his tomb, which is covered in writhing, bloody faces, only to have Xusia use his power to rip out the witch’s heart from across the room just to prove he can. This scene felt inspired and I can imagine someone with more talent and aesthetic vision making this scene far more gruesome and memorable. Guillermo del Toro, are you reading this?) If you can accept poorly written dialogue (that is heavy with sexual innuendo), plot holes, male chauvinism, and some sexism, and if you have a love for B movies that have relatively decent scores, than may I suggest giving ‘The Sword and the Sorcerer’ a go? Why not watch the trailer? Did I mention that there’s a sword that shoots swords? Well, there’s a sword that shoots swords.
