What is Copper and Dawn's relationship? Were they actually 'mates' cause they just say they're best friends? But he said her kids are his 🤔

They were both best friends and mates! They were in a queerplatonic relationship, a relationship that isn't 100% platonic nor 100% romantic. For them, towards the end of Copperleaf's life, they became a lot more romantic towards each other, but for the most part it was a platonic love, trust, and respect between the two!

Copperleaf kept Finchflight away and raised Dawncloud's kits, so they viewed Copperleaf as their father, which Copperleaf accepted wholeheartedly (with Dawncloud's approval). Because of this, and how very close they always were (hardly ever had one without the other!), other cats called them mates, and Dawncloud and Copperleaf never bothered to correct them because, well, for Dawncloud, it felt like a layer of protection---if she had a 'mate' then no one else would try to hurt her like Finchflight did. But they always referred to each other as best friends, and had never officially confessed their romantic feelings for each other. They were very much content with the undefined relationship they had.

Chapter 37

Copperpaw pressed himself against the cold, gray material of the tunnel as the voices moved past. He pricked his ears, listening as Stumpytail, Brownpaw, Scorchwind, and Whitepaw moved past. He held his breath until he was sure they’d passed, then he sprung forward and raised his nose to the air. ShadowClan scents overlapped each other in a big mess, and he didn’t know Dawncloud well enough to differentiate her scent.

Reminder that when Copperpaw left ThunderClan to join ShadowClan he;

a) didn't plan to do so when he snuck out to see Dawncloud in ShadowClan territory

and, b) barely even knew Dawncloud at this point (they had only met two times prior, once at the border, and another at the Gathering)

question bc i don't remember or it hasn't happened - will any of the firefam find out why copperleaf left for shadowclan ? other than just the brokenstar drama ? bc them finding out copperleaf was protecting dawncloud ... hoo boy

as of right now, all any other clans outside of ShadowClan know/believe/assume that Copperleaf left for ShadowClan either because he a) was already mates with Dawncloud and had halfclan kits, or b) to become mates with Dawncloud and have kits with her. the other clans all assume Blossomtail, Oakfur, Swampfur, and Applefur are all biologically his!

this includes the Firefamily, even Spottedleaf never heard the full story and isn't sure.
