Day 6 - Highway to Hell
Today we started pretty early from Durango. We were on the road at 7:15am. Looks like we are getting better at time management. It was 55F when we started from Durango. Hardly any traffic. The roads were wet as expected. The road from Durango to Ouray (Hwy 550) is also known as The Million Dollar Highway. Just within a few miles we started climbing up, and the temperature started to drop. This section of the road was pretty fast and fun. Amazing views of the mountains. Patchy clouds, some of which were hugging the mountains. The temperature started to make us a little uncomfortable. It was time to stop and add another layer. Much comfortable after that. As we moved on, the roads started to become more and more curvy, winding up to 10,000ft. It went as low as 43F on our way. Initially just the roads were wet, but as we reached closer to the peak, we were riding within the clouds. The feeling was just awesome. (Checkout the video.) A little further up and it started drizzling. Drizzled all the way up to Silverton. Pretty little town. Stopped for breakfast at a small place called Mattie and Maude's. Best pancakes ever. Fluffy like a cake! We were having so much fun, wanted to make sure we capture it properly. Managed to find a place where we could buy a USB cable to charge the GoPro camera. From Silverton to Ouray, the road is named as Highway to Hell. Steep winding mountain roads, no guard rails, peaking up to 10,000ft. When we started riding again, good thing the rain had stopped. A little more traffic than earlier. Mostly due to much slower roads. Kuntal was having fun filming and taking pictures. It was still cold around 47F may be. Lot of motorcyclists on the way. We could see snow on almost every peak. The views were fantastic! I almost forgot how deep the drops were. The view and the experience made it feel like the Highway to Heaven! From Ouray, we continued on Hwy 550 up to Montrose. Beautiful roads everywhere. Lots of ski resorts on the way. Montrose seemed to be a decently big town. We stopped to get some accessories for the GoPro. From there we headed east on US 50. Surprisingly it was a nice road too. It was past lunch time and there was nothing in sight. Perhaps should have eaten back in Montrose. Somewhere near Blue Mesa reservoir we found a store/ tavern. The old lady was nice enough to walk us through the store and give us options to eat. Snacks was all we got đ. The road from there followed the lake/ reservoir. Awesome road to be on. Music was making it even better. As we moved east, US 50 was getting better and better. After taking a short on-the-side-of-the-road break to fend of the post-lunch-sleepiness, we started climbing up again. Mild showers once in a while. We reached another mountain peak. Was close to 10k ft if I recall correctly. Just at the peak traffic halted. Everything stopped. It was a stop for construction & enforced one way lane. Frikkin more than 30 mins of wait. Drenched with another shower in that time. As we climbed down, full-on rains. Just for a few miles it was a downpour. So much fun riding through it. I love these tires! Finally reached Buena Vista, we got a nice double rainbow welcome. Had a nice dinner at the Asian Palate. Found a nice and cozy cabin for the night. It's July 8th. Off to Rocky Mountains tomorrow...
