I'm JUST NOW seeing this??

One of the best thing the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series did was making some scenes more emotional and touching than in the manga, and even adding some intimate, cute scenes that weren't in the manga. I am very grateful for that. Here are some examples, even though there are many:

-> When Gokū wakes up after being finally healed from his heart disease

-> Gokū and Chichi say goodbye when he has to go back in the Majin Buu arc

(don't mind the horrible "Sangoten" instead of "Goten"... that's what the first french translations and dubs used to call Goten. It wasn't Gokū, Gohan and Goten but Sangoku, Sangohan and Sangoten. Don't ask me why. That's the only scan I could find and I don't have my volumes with me right now, sorry.)

-> Kuririn hugs Gokū after he's cured from his heart disease

(Again, sorry for the "Sangoku"...)

And many other examples. As for the touching scenes the series added, there's for example this scene where Gokū and Chichi kiss, that doesn't exist in the manga :

Or literally the whole arc at the end of Dragon Ball where Gokū and Chichi go on an adventure together before getting married.

I used a lot of examples centered around Gokū and Chichi because I love them haha but they're not the only ones! There are many other examples centered around other characters!

Anyway, I am absolutely not saying these scenes are bad in the manga. I am just grateful that the people who worked on the series decided to offer us different versions of these, more touching and emotional! It's great to see these characters hugging, kissing, etc - we see that a lot less in the manga. It wasn't Toriyama's thing and it's fine. We get to see different versions of these scenes, some more emotional than the others, and I love it. And I love love love all these cute scenes the series added!

However... All of this makes me wonder why they made this Gokū and Gohan's hug so cold in the anime?

Like, usually, they made the scenes more emotional, making the characters hug when they didn't in the manga and such. And here they decided to make this hug wayyy colder than Toriyama drew it. In the anime, Gokū doesn't even hug his son back??? While in the manga, he does, and warmly.

I am very curious about this. I don't understand why they did that.

I think people rarely notice that ordinary Saiyans don't just enjoy "fighting"—they actually enjoy enslaving and oppressing the weak. Even their hierarchy and relationships with each other lean in that direction.

Humanity, on the other hand, is precisely the kind of people who enjoy a good fight; they enjoy competing, pushing themselves beyond their limits. They enjoy pushing others to do the same.

That's why I think it was Grandpa Gohan who made Goku who he is. Goku loves fighting and pushing his limits, not because he's a Saiyan, but because he was raised by a human, a master of martial arts.
