Summary: Nines experiences synthetic dermal tone shift triggered by emotional stimuli (aka blushing) when you call him cute for the first time.

a/n: sorry americans, but I don't understand feet and stuff. 180cm is around 6 feet if google isn't lying to me.
This is the first time I’m writing him, hope you enjoy:)
It started with a coffee. Or, more accurately, your coffee and his silent observation of it.
You two were sitting in the breakroom at the station, catching a break from the investigation you were assigned to with the android. It was a pathetic effort to call it that, it was more like a sterile conference pod with a coffee machine and a few tables thrown in as an afterthought. However, it had a window which lighted the otherwise sad little room with the colours of the outside world. Pink, yellow and blue neon colours creeped through the glass, illuminating the side of the RK900’s face. He had strict but delicate features balanced perfectly, thanks to the technology and engineering of CyberLife. His light eyebrows always sat stern above his icy grey eyes, as they observed everyone and everything around him. The comfortable blueness of his LED shone through the meek colors of the jumping ads, matching the fluorescent part of his jacket.
Nines didn’t need breaks, he was after all, designed to be the best, most durable and most efficient android Cyberlife has ever created, but for your sake he always sat down with you while you drank your coffee. He would never admit to it but the minor malfunctions your presence caused in his system were … preferable and positive.
It was such a strange sight seeing his nearly 6 feet tall figure sitting inhumanly stiff and perfect across your warm and gentle frame, while you were drinking with all of your imperfections in your posture.
You blew gently on the steaming cup, holding it with both hands, enjoying the warmth and the hot scent of the liquid that washed over you. Cold, grey eyes watched your every move silently and curious from across the table. You suggested he buy thirium so he could also ‘drink’ something on your break but he refused every time, stating that he didn’t need to drink nor eat. So he remained stoic and unmoving every day, as you two sat down together.
“I don’t understand the appeal,” – he started in his monotone, flat voice – “based on my calculations, caffeine has a bitter taste. However, other research supports the fact that humans prefer foods and liquids which are sweet.”
A tender smile danced around the corner of your lips as you answered him – “That's true. But maybe it's not about the caffeine, but rather about the feeling of warmth and comfort it brings out in people.”
“Comfort can be simulated.” – His strict eyebrows furrowed ever so slightly, analysing your words. You found it so endearing about him. Always researching and fact checking then returning back to you asking questions in the way others found intimidating. You knew that he would never reveal such ‘confidential information’ about himself outright, but you saw him tyng to understand how feelings worked. In his own way, he was making tremendous progress. As time went on, you discovered a soft light behind his icy irises every time you praised and agreed to his findings.
“Sure,” – you replied, sipping. – “But it's different when it's real.”
He was quiet again for some time. His LED blinked between blue and yellow, processing your words carefully, and trying to come up with an optimal response probably. You had learned to wait for however much time he needed to ‘think’ about things he’s just learned. It was a fascinating thing to watch him working through these new challenges, as he didn't change at all. His face, no matter what happened, always wore the exact same tone deaf expression as if he was reading a grocery list. The real chaos was buried deep inside him, between the blue wires of his chest and brain, pulsating, running and buzzing with speed and a quite frustrating anger which demanded answers.
After what felt like 10 minutes, his low voice penetrated the silence of the room. – “Every day you spend time with me… I find it agreeable.”
“You do?”
“Yes.”
You tilted your head, studying him for a moment. The sharp line of his jaw framed his handsome face as he looked at you seriously. You couldn’t help but get lost in the details of his pale features, the curve of his perfect forehead and the line of his nose as it flowed down his thin lips, then travelling back towards his irises. His expression was calm as usual, but his eyes betrayed the slightest flicker of something sweet. They were swimming in the mirrored lights of the neon ads, highlighted from within with a strange light that wasn’t part of his usual appearance.
He was charming in the way the snow filled Alps are. Freezing at first glance but calm and hiding something pleasant. They sing a sort of quietness into the air, which you have to experience to understand, and even then a few hidden mysteries remain. However, instead of being threatening, it’s welcoming towards you.
How could someone so strong, designed for perfection, could look at you like you were beyond logic?
A soft smile sneaked into your lips and eyes, making them twinkle as you continued to look at him.
“You are cute Nines.”
His head jerked up in the tiniest movement, surprised eyes locking into yours as his LED started to run around in yellow. He blinked once, twice , thrice.
“Cute?” — he echoed the word, which felt strange on his own tongue. His emotionless voice was quieter than usual, as if even uttering the word itself could bring danger with it.
“Yeah,” — you said with a shrug, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. — “In a ‘deadpan robot boyfriend who pretends he doesn’t care about human things but definitely does’ kind of way.”
Now he froze. His already motionless structure became, if possible, even more still and stiff. The flicker of yellow at his temple increased, became rapid, almost frantic in its blinking, urging a response. He dropped his gaze to the table, then to the floor , then back at you, as if trying to locate the correct social response and failing miserably. Into the pale canvas of his cheeks, blue thirium started to slowly drip into, dying it the lightest of azure.
“I… do not believe I was designed to be… ‘cute’”. — he said awkwardly and roboticly in a way that was ridiculously charming.
“Maybe not,” — you said, leaning forward just a little with a teasing grin on your lips. — “But you are. Especially when you make that face.”
“What face?” — he shot back immediately, blinking again.
“That one.” — you said pointing. — “The one you are making right now. All confused and blushing.”
Upon your words, the azure deepened, creating a deeper ocean across his handsome face. He looked utterly scandalised like a Victorian man seeing a bare ankle the first time. — “I’m not blushing. My internal temperature regulator is functioning within normal parameters.”
You raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. — “Then what’s with the blue cheeks, big boy?”
He glanced away, clearly at loss. You thought he looked completely and irresistibly beautiful like this. His LED becoming one yellow circle from the constant flickering, his averted grey eyes running softer checks and searching for an answer and of course, his light skin flowing with his cobalt shade. For a moment, the always composed RK900 looked … shy. And of god, if that didn’t make him even cuter.
“I am… experiencing an unfamiliar psychological response.” — he admitted, voice barely above a whisper. — “… possibly triggered by your compliment or your proximity.”
You blinked, confused for a second, decoding his response then laughed softly. — “You really don’t know how to take being called cute, don't you?”
“No,” — he stated plainly. “But… I don’t object to it.”
Your smile softened as you looked at him affectionately. “Good, because I mean it.”
Silence entered the room again, but it wasn’t an awkward one. It was filled with soft glances and unspoken thoughts. You placed one of your hands onto his stretched ones, petting them slowly with your thumb.
After a while, his thrirum levels recovered into their normal measures and his paleness returned. As he looked up, his chilly eyes had a gentle look to them and his LED faded back to a calm blue.
“You are… cute too.” — he said, like it was the bravest and most challenging thing he’d ever done.
You couldn’t help but laugh again. However this time, you were the one blushing.
I was tagged by the lovely @warrenwaskilledbyadeer ! That post is here [x], I was getting overwhelmed by how long the post was lol
So the idea is to tag your top 5 fics and what you like about them... scary. This also made me realise I had more than five fics??
Too Bad You Can't Leave Yourself (DBH, Gen, Connor and Gavin enemies to friends, Words: 174,196)
Surprising no one I'm sure. It's the big one. It's really really long, it's me deciding to upload my fic from my notes app, and yeah it kinda blew up, huh? I thought it was a dead fandom but hey. Look at me now. People's responses to it still shock me. Forever grateful, even when the hype moves on I'll still be obsessed with it I fear.
It's absolutely crammed with scenes, interactions and moments I'm super proud of. I'm not... super good at talking positively about myself? It's just. I am proud of it. It's got Gavin becoming my favourite character, me getting to show Connor as being vulnerable and a badass, and I put like. So many parallels and stuff in there and like. PEOPLE NOTICED?? aaaaaaaaaaaa
2. On the Head of a Pin (DBH, sequel to tbycly).
Yeah probably not a shock either. Now I know this fic isn't as like... snappy as the first one, but as a sequel it was never gonna be. Also! I was in a rare position where I had so much to work with from the previous fic, and I've got SO MUCH coming. I'm so excited about this one!!
3. 5 Dares and 1 Apology (DBH, Words: 2,036)
Written as a gift for @julientel, I wrote it during tbycly, and it was a nice break from the heavy stuff going on there. A light-hearted silly one, where I just got to write Connor and Gavin quipping at each other. And recently a mutual told me THIS was the first fic they found me through?? crazy haha. But yeah - this fic is also proof I can be retrained... sometimes.
4. Wrong (DBH, Connor, Hank and Evil RK900, Words: 5,632).
This one was an idea I had ages ago and was initially wary of bc of how differently I had written RK900 to what he normally is.
However, I really liked the earlier scenes of the fic, where Hank and Connor talking and just working a case together, watching the "Kara" tape and Hank peppering in some more of his own experiences of androids before Connor. And then Nines shows up and it all goes wrong.
5. Halloween 2039 (DBH, Kara, Markus and Connor, Words: 5,924)
This one was me trying to challenge myself. A chapter from each android, talking about what they did that first Halloween, a year after the revolution. It was the first time I had written focusing on someone other than Connor (for the most part) and... it's very wholesome and cute and I'm proud of it. I liked the bit of world building I could squeeze in, Kara and Alice stuff, and also I was really proud of Markus, who I have always been terrified to write for?
(Especially proud of my beta reader who offered to check it with zero notice, omg I am so sorry)
I have two other fics - The Fall Guy (so named after the Ryan Gosling movie I borrowed the scene from, yes, sorry Gavin), which I wrote for @prettyboysinpain (proud of Gavin's bickering in this lol) and then Who Really Cares, for @cschita's birthday gift (aka the OCs only fic, where I didn't write about Connor or Gavin lol).
I am tagging.... @randomgeologist , @cramberry24 , @veilder and @citricsinger76 and anyone else who would like to join <3
This is a weird way to come back into writing fics again, but here's a very vaguely edited fic that I wrote a while back to get me back into the groove of posting. I hope you like sick reader x snarky bastard fics lol.
Thoroughly Analyzed (rk900 x reader)
Word Count: 1,005
"Oh fuck off, Gavin, I'm not sick!"
You all but sputtered, your cheeks dusted a light pink as you stood in front of your friend and coworker's desk, arms crossed and hip cocked to the side while you eyed him with as much disdain as you could muster.
"Are you being serious, dumb ass? You babysat Chris' kid while it had the flu four days ago, and now you're drinking tea and popping cough drops at your desk like it's your job. Just admit you were an idiot and go home."
You scoffed, glaring at Gavin as you moved away to sit down in your desk chair before turning it to face him once more.
"It wasn't a bad idea for me to babysit the kid, Reed, and I definitely did not get sick because of an eighteen month old child. Now do you have anything of substance to say, or can I finally get back to work?"
You watched as Gavin rolled his eyes, chuckling slightly under his breath as he turned his attention back to his monitor,
"Yeah yeah, whatever you say, loser. Good luck nursing yourself back to health without taking a day off work."
Fighting the urge to flip off your coworker, you instead turned your gaze towards your own monitor, only to find yourself looking right above it and into the eyes of your department's rk900 model android, who had long since been dubbed 'Nines'.
You swallowed thickly, wincing shortly thereafter at the pain that action caused within your throat before catching yourself and forcing a polite smile,
"Hey Nines, what's up?"
You asked as casually as you could manage, watching as the android in question raised a brow before motioning towards Gavin, who had started watching your interaction the moment you'd spoken aloud.
You shrugged, trying not to pay your human coworker too much mind as you cleared your throat again awkwardly before attempting to speak once more, though your voice did sound notably strained this time,
"Reed told me last week that babysitting Chris' kid while he was sick was a bad idea because it was sure to get me sick too. I told him that my body was strong enough to fight off whatever an eighteen month old had, and he bet me twenty bucks that I'd be too sick to come to work within the week. That was four days ago, and now he's doing his best to convince me to go home since he's gotten it in his head that I caught the flu from the kid."
Nines' gaze was cold and stern as he stood, his arms crossed as he took a step closer,
"Did you?"
He asked, and you allowed yourself a moment to get lost in said gaze, however cold it may have been, before snapping out of it, remembering your promise to keep things professional at work.
Wouldn't want anyone catching on, after all.
"Wha- no, of course I didn't."
You sputtered nervously, hearing Gavin chuckle as he watched you from his seat, clearly amused and more than a little entertained.
"Are you sure about that, Detective?"
Nines pressed, taking another two steps closer to where you were sitting as he watched you calmly, a slight smirk making its way to his lips all the while.
"Because I have noticed a bit of a drop in your performance throughout the past two days, and it is part of policy that sick employees remain at home for necessary rest."
You shivered at the sound of Nines' voice, but did your best to play it cool despite your physical reaction to his now significantly closer presence.
"I-I'm fine I promise. I think I've just been a little tired, is all..."
You trailed off as the android in question moved to stand directly beside you, his hand falling to the back of your chair and turning it in his direction, thus forcing you to face him head on as he gazed down at you intently, that smirk remaining all the while.
"Oh really? Well, if you're just tired, I don't suppose you'd mind a routine test of your health?"
"A routine test of my health? No but what exactly-"
You were cut off by a pair of familiar lips crashing into yours as an equally familiar hand moved to cup your chin, tilting your face upward as you gasped into the kiss, eyes fluttering closed against your will. You remained this way for several seconds, until finally, Nines pulled away, humming as he looked down at you with both amusement and exasperation evident in his expression,
"According to my analysis of your saliva, you are suffering from the common flu, detective. Please gather your things and allow me to bring you home. I will inform the captain of our absence."
Unable to argue, you nodded meekly, your hand briefly raising to touch your subtly bruised lips before you snapped out of it and hurried to get your things together, trying desperately to ignore Gavin's shocked expression all the while.
Nines, on the other hand, seemed eager to bask in your shared coworker's surprise, and was in no apparent rush to leave, gathering his own belongings with the swift and relaxed ease that seemed to come so naturally to him.
Once everything was together, however, he made no effort to poke at Gavin further, simply guiding you by your elbow to the door as Reed began to follow suit, sputtering various questions, most of which were nonsensical and jumbled.
Eventually though, as the front door loomed before the two of you, Nines did stop and turn towards the man, his lips twitching upward ever so slightly as he smoothly withdrew his wallet from his pocket before reaching into it, his gaze never leaving Gavin's all the while.
"Oh, and thank you for your concern for my partner's well being, Detective Reed."
He said cheekily as he handed the man in question a twenty dollar bill before exiting the building entirely with you at his side.

You sipped your coffee in the break room next to Tina Chen, who quietly texted on her phone. The Styrofoam cup of coffee warmed your palms as you listened to the news. You hadn't turned to face the TV mounted on the wall, but you knew it would be an important V-106 update once you heard reporter Michael Brinkley's voice.
"Several sources report that V-106, the Trojan-style Android virus, has spread over 60% of Detroit's deviant population. Although police are investigating the root cause of the virus, progress has been made in identifying temporary fixes that allow androids momentary relief from the virus..."
"Yeah," Tina scoffed. "Like fucking an android."
"Shh," you smirked.
"... by giving the deviants what they go into meltdown for. We've contacted CyberLife technicians for other potential solutions, but they have nothing to comment at this time."

Connor feels the hum of electricity through the floor; vibrations from deep beneath chilled tiles; he's lying on his back. Glitches of pixelated red flash behind his eyelids, along with a series of lists, of errors and warnings that begin to pop up in a relentless assault of his HUD. Something is wrong.
A cool liquid trickles down his face; too thick to be water. Thirium.
