Hi everyone! I haven't posted on here in a very long time as I've been working quite a bit but yesterday I started class! Disney offers quite a few different classes in two categories: seminars and collegiate courses. Seminars have no outside work (and thus are not approved for credit) and collegiate courses do (and are approved for credit). I am taking one of each! The collegiate course I'm taking is Organizational Leadership. There's a lot of group work involved. The seminar I'm taking is Disney Heritage. This is the most popular class they offer and it usually has a long waiting list, so you're lucky if you get in. Even in the first day we talked so much about Walt and his story! It's all about his beginnings up until the opening of Epcot. There's guest speakers and field trips, and I'm super excited! Both of my facilitators for these classes are very relaxed. They let us have drinks and snacks while we were there (OL is 4 hours and DH is 2 so I needed a lot of snacks). You have to look nice for class - business casual is the rule. Basically, you can wear jeans with no tears or designs. Or you could also wear your work costume.

You will not be scheduled to work within 2 hours of when your classes start/end. So let's say you have class from 1-3. Your shift wouldn't start until 5. or from 4-6, your shift would end by 2. I highly recommend taking at least one class, because these classes are unique to Disney. Be sure to have an eye on your email for when registration opens up!! Thanks for reading!!

Because you did DCP, did you need to stay at college for an extra semester to make up for the classes you didn't take while you were doing the program? I really want to do the program but I just want to figure out if I'd need to stay a little longer than 4 years or not

I had already graduated when I started my CP, but hopefully I can still be helpful. The answer to this question definitely depends on your school and your major requirements. Some people can take more classes during their other semesters to make up for the classes they missed. Some schools will give you credit for your internship which can help you graduate on time. Some colleges offer online classes you can take while you’re on your CP–you can register for a class time so that you won’t be scheduled to work and you can use the learning center to take your online class. Some CPs register for classes at local community colleges or for online classes at other schools and transfer those credits to their school. I would definitely talk to your adviser about your 4-year plan and your school’s flexibility in giving credits for internships, online classes, or community college classes.

DCP Course Registration

So today was the day Disney opened their registration for the DCP courses. Originally it was scheduled for 12am EST, but it was moved to 10am EST at the last minute. I'm not really sure why, but it's okay. :) Anyways....it was a mad dash. My future roommates and I counted down the minutes, asking our last few questions about the process until "10:00" appeared on our laptops. Then....AWAY WE WENT! All of us college kids rushing to have our first pick of the classes and class times. The website became so flooded, that many of us couldn't even progress past the log-in page. "Server Error 149" I waited the first time for several seconds before I realized that there was no salvaging the page. I panicked. Logged in again. "Server Error 149" I asked my roommates. They were going through the same situation.

"It won't let me past the survey!" One commented in frustration.

Survey? I won't even let me past the password stage. I worried. 

This time, I passed the log-in Page Of Doom to be comforted by the "Password Reset Page" directly after. No! I wondered if I would get the chance to schedule even one class that I had been hoping for. 10:07. Several people started posting on the Facebook pages about classes they enrolled for. I patiently tried logging in again. This time, I made it to the first page of the survey!

YES! I cried internally. Almost there!

I filled in three bubbles as to what my interests were for participating in the courses. "Next"

Go! Go! 10:10. And back again.

With a few more tries, I made it back to the survey page. This time, I didn't hesitate. I knew that if I saw a break in the system, I had to take advantage of it or lose the opportunity to take classes.

To my surprise, not only were there classes left, but both of the classes I was hoping to take were still available! And they were in the evening!! What kind of miracle is this?!

I fumbled a few times picking the right course times in my utter disbelief and had go through the log-in merry-go-round a few more rounds. Thankfully, Disney set up their registration in a way that saves your previous answers (Thank You Disney!!). This last time, when a slight break in the system appeared, I shot through to the end.

Disney Classes

One of the most common questions I get when I tell people I'm doing to College Program is will you be taking classes? Some people take online classes to keep their scholarships like my roommate is doing. Some people take the Disney classes offered (more on that here:  http://cp.disneycareers.com/en/program-components/learning/course-syllabi/). And some people do neither at all. UNH would not give me credit without taking two classes and I really wasn't happy there so I withdrew from there and I plan to transfer in the spring. With that being said I am taking two Disney classes (you can only take two at a time). I am taking Exploring Marketing and Exploring Environmentality and Sustainability! Before withdrawing I was an economics major with a concentration in sustainability so naturally the Sustainability class was a must do! I'm also very interested in marketing and who better to learn from but the best? There is three type of classes offered: Collegiate, Exploration series (of which both my classes are), and Professional Development. I was drawn to the exploration series because the classes are a shorter time span (eight weeks) allowing me to pick up shifts around the holidays and because they are highly interactive. Plus I wasn't sure how I would handle working 40 hours a week plus classes so the shorter classes seemed ideal. I'll be sure to write later about how I like them!

Signing up for Courses during the Disney College Program

Thanks to those ~~WoNdErFuL~~ Facebook groups (sort of kidding, those people can be crazy, but helpful) I found out that enrollment for courses opened with the the 24 hours of when I saw the post. (Some people had gotten an email blast--I didn't get an Education Opportunity email until early July...) I think it was June 22 at midnight EST it opened. So I made sure to look at the site and prepare by looking at the syllabi for the courses I was interested in. 

So there are regular collegiate courses that people take if they are off-campus for the semester. They, I assume, have a Disney aspect to them. But, since I am not looking to get college credit for classes, I opted for the Disney Exploration Series. This is more like seminars in a general area with case studies and guest speakers and how the topic relates to Disney. No tests, no papers, no homework. yes.

You can sign up for two classes at a time, and they are for eight week periods, once a week. I decided I wanted to take Exploring Marketing and Exploring Guest Service. The other really popular class is Disney Heritage, and as great as it sounds, I am looking to take courses that will most benefit me to get a professional internship asap! And I think the classes I picked will help with that. Also I hope to learn Disney Heritage by simply being on property as a cast member. And I want to learn things I couldn't necessarily find in trivia books about Walt ;)

So I kept refreshing the enrollment page as the time approached, as was everyone else because at 11 pm (CST) I got on but it was suuuuper slow. I guess we crashed the site because I was getting a notification that the website/server did not exist or couldn't be found! I was worried it was only me, but thanks to the Facebook group, I found out everyone was freaking out. It only took about ten minutes then to get in to the page to sign up, and I acted quickly. I was a little worried about the availability of the classes, and I had no sense of when the classes would be offered. Luckily, there were lots of options for both classes I wanted, no problem!

I scheduled both for Wednesdays. Exploring Marketing from 8:30 am-10:30 am and then Exploring Guest Service 11-1. It says the classes are in Chatham, so it's good to know that I won't have to travel far to get to class! Yay small school girl is happy! 

Other perks of taking classes:

-Networking! I can't wait to meet the guest speakers and find out more about the inner workings of marketing in Disney.

-You're not scheduled for work when you have class, so I'll never have to work on Wednesday mornings. I suppose I could work a afternoon/night shift though, which is fine!

-IT'S FREE. I totally get that some people don't want to go to class, especially after graduating, on their days off. But why not take advantage of this opportunity? It could open doors I don't even know exist yet!

I'm really looking forward to these classes. They start Sept 24 until Nov 12.

Well I got myself on the waitlist for Entertainment Show Production (they waitlist everyone so they can verify our majors) and now I just have to wait and make sure I got in it. And now it's bedtime.

Classes!

I registered for classes this morning, here's what I got: Corporate Communications Tuesdays 1:30pm - 5:30pm Creativity & Innovation Thursdays 1:30pm - 5:30pm Hopefully the work load for these won't be too bad along with my work, and hopefully I get to go to the parks a lot despite the fact that I will probably have no time. If anyone has the same classes let me know! :)
