hi hello there ! i’m sj and this is my g penina - nina to the regular folk of the world !
nina is a waitress at dorothy’s diner - she worked there part-time the whole way through high school and it just morphed into her full-time job once she had that degree in hand.
higher education literally never even crossed her mind - nina is someone who’s very caught up in the every day details of trying to get by, and honestly doesn’t really feel like she even has time to sit around crafting grand dreams for what her future might be like, because the future is vulnerable, and she doesn’t want her heart getting caught up in something that’s never actually going to happen anyway.
so in other words penina is a huuuuge pessimist. prepare for the worst and hope for the mediocre kinda gal.
that doesn’t mean she can’t support other people’s dreams, but she’s not the best person to come to if you want a smile and agree type of answer. she doesn’t fluff the truth, even if it might spare someone’s feelings to embellish a little. she won’t be brutal, but she will be brutally honest.
she loves to sing - and it’s not that she’s some fantastic hidden superstar, she just loves music in general. learned to play piano on her grandma’s upright and never looked back. if you happen to stroll into the diner when its otherwise empty, you will definitely hear faint humming emanating from some corner.
it’s just nina and her dad at home, who raised her on his own after her mom took off when she was two - and she always maintains it wasn’t all that traumatic for her given that at two, she barely even knew who the woman was. the person she’s closest to in the whole entire world is her dad - ride or die, and a complete daddy’s girl.
she knows that her mom is somewhere in new orleans, but she has literally no interest in making any contact with her beyond the birthday card she receives every year. she knows her dad wouldn’t object to her finding out more about her mom, but she also feels like that would be something of a betrayal - to seek out someone who left him in the lurch like that.
honestly she’s just - very reserved, very guarded, has never actually had someone be interested enough to make her open up so she just... never has??
