I’ve long heard many music friends singing the praises of San Diego-born artist Jackie Mendoza, who’s largely inspired by her motherland, Mexico. Mendoza sings in both English and Spanish, fusing Latin-driven dance beats, colourful soundscapes, and inventive electronic pop. The Spanish language R&B/pop scene has certainly been on the move lately, with a ton of artists breaking it big with crossover hits. And then there’s ever incredible Rosalía, whose award garnering album ‘El mal querer’ seems to be on everyone’s best of 2018 lists. Jackie Mendoza brings some of that same flamenco-inspired brilliance on De Lejos, alongside hints of Tirzah and Micachu. Though we can’t all understand what Jackie Mendoza is singing about on the song, we still feel like we’ve been transported into some splendid and lavish storybook tale. Unpredictable electronic flourishes and striking sheers cut into the song, creating much texture and vivid plot twists. Jackie Mendoza has two performances in NY lined up in February and March, as well as an appearance at SXSW in Austin.
