They aren’t perfect because I’m by no means good at removing backgrounds from screenshots (and I sure as hell won’t be using AI to do it), but because I headcanon Deacon as aromantic in some way I wanted to make some icons of him. I’ve got aromantic, greyromantic, and demiromatic here! For all of your aromantic Deacon needs :)

i think one of my favorite deacon headcanons is that he only lies:

when the lie is so patently inconsequential that it doesnt even matter that he's lying (ie ricky on the bridge), or

when the lie is so obvious or the person he's lying to knows him so well that it's honestly more of a bit than a lie (like the synth thing. i just know he was gigglin in private waiting for sole to open that stupid note and call him on it).

almost nothing in the game indicates that he's actually a good liar when it matters. in fact, if he really was a good liar, it wouldn't be such common knowledge because no one would catch him in it. des immediately calls him on his lie when he and sole come back from the switchboard, he get flustered when you confront him in bunker hill, hell he barely chokes out a believable lie when he's trying to get clearance for the prydwen.

but because he maintains so insistently that hes such a liar, no one trusts him anyway. his reputation negates any necessity to actually lie, and if a liar knows anything, it's that the best lies are the ones you don't even have to sell.

I have been stricken

So like I’ve read the posts about Deacon being a cryptid roommate, cryptid friend, but what about a cryptid boyfriend???? So I’m in a relationship where I essentially work the day shift and my SO works the night shift. It works, but it gets weird sometimes. I feel like even if Sole kept up work with the Railroad, they wouldn’t be able to see Deacon all the time, which leads to Weird Cryptid Boyfriend Behavior TM

-Sole comes home to find small gifts in their house. Maybe it’s a bunch of flowers on the table, maybe it’s just a rock, maybe it’s a comic book. Who knows!! He doesn’t usually leave notes, but when he does, they’re never in plain english (or any language for that matter.) They’re always coded. Sometimes its classic lit quotes, sometimes it’s “lol Drummer Boy picks his nose when he doesn’t think anyone is looking.” 

-If Sole and Deacon are fortunate enough to sleep in the same bed for some portion of the night, Sole will sometimes wake up to see a stranger, calmly shuffling around their bedroom. This used to alarm them, until they eventually realized that it was always just Deacon in a disguise, getting ready to leave. 

-Ever feel like you’re being followed? Sole does, quite often! If their path crosses with Deacon’s, Deacon will follow them around for a while to check up on them. Sole has tried to shout into the woods, letting Deacon know that they know he’s there, but they never get anything outside of the occasional stifled chuckle. (If he’s actually caught, he plays it off as a joke, but in reality, he does care about SS’s wellbeing, and it can be telling to see how they act when he’s not around.)  Sometimes he leaves little shelters with supplies for them if he has a feeling where they’re going

-Sole will sometimes find their clothes missing/replaced with some of Deacon’s clothes. They don’t mind, but it can be jarring, opening your closet to find one of your shirts missing or replaced with a three piece suit. If they don’t notice the replacement clothes, they go downstairs and ask Nick, who’s drinking coffee at the kitchen counter. 

“Hey have you seen my blue cardigan with the tan cuffs?”

“I saw it on Deacon this morning.”

“Did you ask him about it?”

“He looked busy.”

“What was he doing?”

“Climbing out of the back window. I don’t know why the man’s so averse to using the front door.”

IDK I just think cryptid boyfriend Deacon during busy work weeks is p cute and fun.

deacon has a really hard time feeling safe enough around people to say what he actually thinks due to his policy of “trust no one, don't get hurt”. the issue with this is the question of when he can be himself which is exclusively limited to;

his bedroom when the door is locked and he's singing along to the radio

when he manages to slip a little and say something truthful that kind of catches him off guard

committing arson

in that exclusive order. this raises quite a few problems because when he actually feels like he CAN trust someone he ends up not knowing the limits of his trust and outwardly tries to avoid them as best as he can or obstruct those barriers like a bull

3. Sleeping Headcanon

Deacon’s a weird sleeper to say the least(that is if he’s ever caught sleeping at all). Sometimes he sleeps butt ass naked, some other times Sole finds him in bed wearing power armor. He also sleeps in multiple positions, whether his limbs are sprawled out all over the bed, he’s curled up in a blanket ball, sometimes he’s sleeping on the floor with one foot on the bed, or he’s lying face down with his butt in the air. Sole still wonders if he’s actually sleeping or just putting up another front when they go to check up on him.

9. General Physical contact Headcanon

Deacon isn’t one who likes to get touched, period. Try to surprise hug him, he’ll curve the fuck out of you and let you fall on your face, crack a joke then laugh at you. Oddly enough he is rather touchy, especially if someone mentions they too don’t like to be touched. A poke on the rib and cheek here, and a slap on the back or butt there, if there’s a way to entertain himself then he’ll sure as hell will take full advantage of yours or anyone else’s misery and discomfort.

16. Anger Headcanon

Deacon is very good at holding his temper, the last time he became truly furious, he basically slaughtered the whole group of the old gang he used to run with. Whether this is true or not, Deacon has seen and done terrible things in the fits of blind rage, so he suppresses those emotion very well and it’s extremely rare to make him enraged. Even when there’s even a slight sign of him truly starting to lose his temper he’ll usually walk away before anything escalates to cool off.

17. Soft spot Headcanon

Deacon’s an animal person through and through, he loves most animals even those that aren’t typically considered by most as “loveable” and oddly enough he loves those creatures the most, such as deathclaws, molerats, and even stinky radstags. He’s also quite fond of children, especially those who are unruly and crude. Children who act like how MacCready used to be like when he was younger(which is why they both get along at times), he finds himself having a softer spot for children like that the most especially because they tend to have a deeper significant reason as to why they actively misbehave.

Deacon headcanon

He likes animals, but really enjoys the company of cats. They don't ask for much, and are nice to be around. Sole allows Deacon to use Home Plate as a home away from HQ. One time they stopped in while on a mission and found Deacon lounging on the couch, reading a book while gently petting the head of a black cat. He always wanted one but HQ isn't safe and Tink claims to be allergic.

Now they have a cat who surprisingly is not named fluffy.

Deacon Headcanon:

Deacon has Photophobia (light sensitivity). Bright lights give him headache and/or nausea, that's why he wears those reflective sunglasses both indoors and outdoors.

(A/N: Had an art teacher in Game Development course that had the same diagnosis. Never saw him without his sunglasses.)

listen i know the man is damaged and *not romanceable* and every single fic out there about a romance between deacon and the sole survivor is all about slow burn and yearning and longing gazes etc etc but can u just imagine: the sole survivor is travelling with someone else for a spell so deacon is back at HQ just bouncing around to this song. just being so excited that hes got someone new in his life to travel with and riff off of. drummer boy and glory totally giving him shit for being so giddy, but they're secretly so happy for him that hes finally giving himself over to feeling things. they all know that caring about people in the railroad makes you vulnerable but man, deacon trying to hit those high notes and doing everything he was assigned, no questions, with a wink and a smile was doing wonders for team morale. the outside world could wait.
