He nearly dropped the bucket in shock. "You can talk?" The fish laughed, a merry little sound, and backflipped. Edwin looked rather fish-like himself, mouth flopping in startled awe. But he quickly gathered himself. "Hm. Well. You can smile. I suppose talking isn't such a stretch." He cleared his throat and held his index finger out to the water. "Hello. Edwin Payne, pleased to make your acquaintance." The fish bobbed in place, eyeing Edwin's finger in confusion. "What's that?" That was surprising, too — he'd half expected the fish to only have the capacity to repeat words, like a parrot. But he restrained himself from showing his surprise that time. It would have been rude. "You're supposed to shake it. It's how people greet each other." It patted his fingertip with a wet flipper. "'Ello!" In which Charles crawls out of the sea, straight into Edwin's arms.
