So yesterday I was on the train home. The train was a little crowded so I was standing. Someone came up behind me and hit me in the head, I’m assuming because I’m Deaf and couldn’t hear them and maybe they thought I was being an asshole instead of thinking I didn’t hear them.
Several people saw it happen and a train worker came and had me file a report.
But I mostly just felt embarrassed. And sad. And a little angry.
I’m usually very proud to be a Deaf person. I love my language and my culture. I love my community. I love the experiences it’s given me- but there’s this sadness to it sometimes.
People will just fucking assault you. Yell, shove, hit. People look at you with pity or say “oh I’m so sorry” when they realize it.
People think you’re less intelligent, less capable. No one thinks of you as an equal. Doesn’t matter that I’m going for a PhD, or that I’m a professor and a teacher. Nothing matters because they just think of you as below them.
You get left out of everything in a world that isn’t designed for you at all.
And the two responses are most commonly: pity or anger. And sometimes some random person will just assault you. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last.
I’m usually very proud but today I’m sad. And I just wanted to ramble to the void about it.
