A spiritual Tomatis effect
“Maybe [problem-solving techniques fail] . . . because we’re treating symptoms while ignoring the root cause: a spiritual Tomatis effect. Is it possible that what we perceive to be relational, emotional, and spiritual problems are actually hearing problems — ears that have been deafened to the voice of God.”- John Ortberg
In the Prologue (“The Tomatis Effect”) of his latest book, Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God, Mark Batterson discusses the Tomatis effect. More than fifty years ago, an otolaryngologist named Dr. Alfred Tomatis treated a renowned opera singer. Mysteriously, the opera singer had lost the ability to sing certain notes.
Dr. Tomatis discovered that even an average opera singer produces 140-decibel sound waves at a distance of one meter. That’s comparable to a military jet taking off from an aircraft carrier. Most noteworthy, the inside of an opera singer’s skull magnifies that sound. Therefore, the sound of the opera singer’s own voice deafened him.
Thus, Pastor Batterson suggests, your negative self-talk deafens you, throwing your life off-key. As a result, God doesn’t get His Word in edgewise. Eventually the competing voices of criticism, condemnation, and lies so deafen you that you’re unable to sing God’s song. Because you lack the ability to hear His voice.
Hence, Mark wonders, “Is God’s voice the loudest in your life? That’s the question. If the answer is no, that’s the problem.”
In conclusion, Pastor Batterson believes we have so little to say because we listen so little, especially to God. Ultimately, Mark adds, we need to find our voice – the unique message God desires to speak through our lives. However, in order to find our voice, we must start with hearing His voice.
Furthermore, the author exhorts, we need to pray the bold prayer of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3:9 – “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” Before you pray that prayer, though, Mark issues one warning:
“If you aren’t willing to listen to everything God has to say, you eventually won’t hear anything He has to say. If you want to hear His comforting voice, you have to listen to His convicting voice. and it’s often what we want to hear least that we need to hear most. Trust me, though: you want to hear what He has to say.”
Today’s question: Do you truly want to hear what God has to say? Please share.
Tomorrow’s blog: “The absolute threshold of hearing”
sleep hollow is mostly a quiet movie till something dramatic happens and thEN THE MUSIC PUMPS IT UP TO 11 TO ULTIMATELY HORRIFY
I have SPD and social phobia and I don't want to hear anymore. Hearing makes everything worse and I can't understand people and they can't understand me, so why bother? All it does is give me panic attacks. I'm going to deafen myself. It'll be better
Hi dear :)
I just want to quickly advise that you go to a hospital or call an emergency contact number if you are planning on or already have done something to damage your hearing. It’s such a sensitive and dangerous area to damage and there are other ways to help your problems with hearing.
I’m assuming that hearing is a problem for you in that you may have a bit of sensory overload (it’s quite common in those with SPD and Social Phobia) and that communicating with others is something that upsets you (as they don’t understand) and if I’ve gotten this wrong please do write another ask in and we’ll give you a more accurate answer <3
A few things that you can do:
Carry noise cancelling headphones or ear buds with you so you can drown sounds out when and where you need to
Remove yourself from the area or person that is upsetting you- it is completely okay to look after yourself first and you can explain later if you want to but even that is in your control (when you remove yourself you can try mindfulness, calming, and grounding techniques)
Explain to those close to you so that in situations where you feel overwhelmed they can back off or help you in whatever way you need. You can do this by sitting them down and explaining things clearly so they could understand, you could write down bullet points, or you could show them websites with information that applies to you- they may understand
See a doctor- there are therapies and help for ways of dealing with or even reducing reactions to sensory overload
I’m so sorry that this is giving you panic attacks- I know how awful sensory overload can be and how utterly frustrating it is when someone doesn’t understand what you are saying but there are ways to get help with this and you can get the support you need even though it is hard. You don’t need to hurt yourself in anyway to make things better, whilst it seems like it’s easier it isn’t worth it and in the future you’ll see how you could have been helped. You deserve help and even though a lot of bad things are coming from hearing at the moment there are lots of good things that come from hearing, like:
Listening to your favourite band
Watching a childhood film
Singing and hearing yourself
Satisfying sounds (ASMR)
Listening to a comedian or someone around you saying something funny
You don’t need to deafen yourself for things to get better- getting help will make things better. Please take care, dear <3
You are getting along fantastically,Amy-Shona~<3
