“Why isn’t he moving?” Steve’s voice is tight with thinly veiled anxiety as he stares up at the building across the bombed out street.
“Fuck,” Bucky breathes behind him drawing the attention of his companions.
“What?” Sam says, pausing mid-movement as he goes through the process of taking off the heavy and now-useless wings.
It’s Natasha that answers, having apparently arrived at the same conclusion Bucky had. Her eyes are wide. “It’s the EMP. He can’t hear a thing.”
That doesn’t stop Steve from screaming, “Clint, look out!”
xxx
The first thing Clint feels when he comes to consciousness is surprise that he did so. The pain comes soon after, from everywhere (falling off a building, he knows from experience, will do that). He’d yell if he could, but he’s still trying to catch his breath from the wind being thoroughly knocked out of him (falling off a building will do that, too) so he just lets out a groan.
That’s when the panic kicks in, because he made a sound, he knows he did, but he didn’t hear it. It takes a moment to remember that he’d stopped hearing before being chucked off of the roof.
He can feel someone’s hand touching his face, and he forces his eyes open. Steve is hovering over him, eyes wide and worried, and his mouth is moving but Clint can’t focus well enough to read his lips.
“My...my hearing aids,” he gasps. He’d forgotten how strange it is not to hear himself speak. “I dunno what happened.”
“EMP,” Steve says, signing the letters as he speaks. He turns and says something to Bucky, who nods and vanishes from Clint’s line of sight. Steve looks back at him and the corners of his mouth turn up in what Clint is sure is supposed to be a comforting smile. It might be, if the rest of Cap’s face weren’t screaming, I’m scared shitless.
“How are you feeling?” the super soldier asks, signing along in the slightly clumsy way of his.
“How…do you think?” He starts to try and sit up, barely moves before Steve’s false smile drops and he desperately shakes his head, waving his hands as well. It’s easy to read his lips this time.
“Don’t move! Clint, don’t move! Don’t move!”
“Okay, okay, don’t move. Got it…”
His awareness is coming back to him, and the pain is sharpening as well. He’s starting to be able to pinpoint where it’s coming from. He must have landed on his left side, since that’s where the worst of it is. His shoulder is definitely fucked, collarbone too, he thinks. His ribs hurt, too, and his hip. His head.
It’s gotta be a spinal injury that Steve’s worried about. Clint gives his toes an experimental wiggle, relieved to find that he can move them just fine.
“Shoulder’s killing me, but I can move my toes,” he says.
Steve shakes his head, then speaks, signing along where he can. Clint is able to catch that Nat and Sam are looking for…something…and Bucky is going for help.
“There’s...there’s no one out here for miles.”
“We’re fast.”
It makes Clint laugh, just for a second because the movement is agony and laughter becomes a cry of pain. His vision goes black and spotty and he must lose consciousness because he comes to to Steve’s knuckles in his sternum. He lets out a groan as he forces his eyes open.
“Oww.”
“OK?” Steve signs frantically, brow pinched, and then again. “OK?”
“m alive.”
“Stay awake,” Steve signs, and then adds, “Please.”
“I’ll try,” Clint says. He’s not sure how well he’ll do at that, though. Something’s wrong. He’s broken into a sweat, despite the snow, and he’s starting to feel light-headed. “I’m...I’m gonna be honest here. ‘m not feeling so good.”
He can tell Steve is alarmed but trying not to look it as he signs, “What?”
“‘m…I’m dizzy, and my…” He frowns. “My stomach hurts…”
Steve nods, and a moment later he’s pushing up Clint’s coat and shirts. Clint lets out a sharp hiss--even his shirt brushing against his skin is agony--and then he sees the looks on Steve’s face. He’s gone still, eyes wide, face pale.
“What…what is it?” He’s not sure he’s said it out loud. He’s not sure if Steve responds, either--his vision is going fuzzy and dark around the edges. And his ears are ringing. It’s strange after the roaring silence, and it only lasts a moment because his eyes slip shut as consciousness slips from his grasp.
Note: I almost had a burn out here and didn't write. But, I managed to write something.

Laurence charged into the building, his team close behind him.
The information said the enemy is in here. Scans showed no one in the buildi-
A flash of light, so bright it felt as if the sun had stooped close, engulfed Laurence. The light hurled him into the wall. Wait, the wall was gone. Obliviated. Laurence tumbled helplessly like a leaf in a riptide before finally landing. He skidded several yards before coming to a grinding halt. Dazed, Laurence tried to get up, but found himself trapped under debris. What was that? He looked around. The site of the building had been razed to the ground. Where is everyone? Did everyone get wiped out? Laurence felt panic rising in his chest. His hands fumbled for his radio. He found it and switched to the appropriate channel.
“Hello? This is Lieutenant Laurence. The building we just went to was rigged to explode. Requesting medical backup.”
The radio remained silent.
“Hello? Is anyone there?”
Silence.
“Hello? Medical, come in please!”
Silence.
Laurence dropped the radio. Despair overcame him. Team status: unknown. Medical backup: unable to reach. Personal injuries: unknown. Status: trapped.
Laurence lay under the debris for hours, looking and listening for any sign of movement. He heard nothing. As night fell, his vision was reduced, melting what hope he had of being rescued. I’m going to die here. Laurence realized. He closed his eyes, hoping that they would at least find his body some day…
A bright light was shone in his face. Laurence winced at the light, trying to squeeze his eyes tighter against the assault of light. A hand was shaking him. He managed to open one eye and finally recognized the insignia on the man’s helmet - medical.
“Medical! Is my team alright?”
The man’s lips moved, but Laurence couldn’t hear him.
“What was that?”
Again, the man’s lips moved as if forming words, but no sound came out. The man moved his hands towards Laurence slowly.
“What’s going on? What are you doing?”
Laurence felt the man’s finger brush beneath his ear. When he brought his hand away, he held up his gloved finger for Laurence to see. Blood.
Blood, on his finger, from under my ear-
It was only then that Laurence realized that the explosion had deafened him.
Laurence started hyperventilating. Deaf? No. How will I fight? How will I be a soldier? Will I be discharged? No, no, no, I can’t be discharged! Out of the corner of his vision, he saw the man gesturing with his palms down in a “calm down” motion. Laurence couldn’t calm down. Being a soldier was his life. If it was taken from him...he didn’t know how he could go on living.
An oxygen mask was put over his face. He tried to fight it, not thinking clearly. Firm hands held him down as drugs were fed into his system. A tear rolled down Laurence’s face as his body stilled and his eyes closed.
My hearing has recently taken a pretty sharp decline, so if you can help me out to get hearing aids, I might be able to save myself from com
Hey guys. I’ve been struggling with my hearing for about two years now, and it has recently gotten quite a bit worse. I can’t afford to pay rent and have food and also get hearing aids, but if I don’t get them, my hearing will only keep getting worse. Anything helps!
hi there! I have a girl in my book who had an accident and became deaf as a result of head trauma. Just wanted to know whether it'd be okay for her to sign to her friend who then translates, and if so how can I accurately/correctly describe signing?
If both friends have had time to learn or had already known sign language, then I would think it would be ok. I would set up that when the friend is there, they translate for her (until they’re distracted or something and then explicitly state that the translator friend is busy and what communication is hindered because of that). I would then just have the english translation in italics so that people remember they are signing and not speaking.
Anyone else in the d/Deaf/hoh community have anything to add?
