Some of you saw yesterday post of #HearingPrivilege (check the tag out on here, Facebook/Twitter!) Now, it's time to show the POSITIVE Side of being Deaf/HOH with #DeafGain! I don't have hearing loss, I have Deaf Gain. I am a proud Deaf/HOH/DeafBlind individual.
#DeafGain, being able to connect and have a tightly knit family - from all over the world. A Community.
#DeafGain, being able to communicate in a language that is purely natural to us Deaf/HOH individuals - Sign Language!
#DeafGain, having the ability to fall asleep in any noisy environment. Peaceful sleep all night!
#DeafGain, Having “no concept of time” because you have been chatting for HOURS on end - then giving a hug of goodbye with a “I will see you soon/later!” Deaf Standard Time!
#DeafGain, having many Deaf events where everyone comes together to laugh, have fun, and not feel excluded - inclusion.
#DeafGain, being a role model to other little Deaf/HOH Children/Youth knowing that they have a strong community who will support them every step of the way
#DeafGain, being able to communicate through glass, in a noisy environment, across the room, in a quiet place - without getting complains that you are “Speaking too loudly”
#DeafGain, Send a picture to your friend using only facial expressions or just a snapshot of one facial expression - is an entire conversation/sentence.
Too many people are talking, it’s too loud around you - that you cannot concentrate? Turn off your HA/CIs - peace and quiet! #DeafGain
Having the ability to fully concentrate on a task/work without distraction of phones ringing, conversations, or shuffle of paper/other things #DeafGain
Having Sign Language to express a story that spoken/written language cannot do so clearly. Sign Language you can describe that part/thing visually whereas spoken language you may not know the jargon/word for it. #DeafGain
Can get access to concerts - stand/sit front row with accurate vibration/feeling while looking at the interpreters #DeafGain
Can’t see because there’s no lights/it’s too dark? Don’t worry! Being able to communicate in the dark still using your natural language - (Tactile) Sign Language. #DeafGain
Going to another country and still be able to communicate with other Deaf/HOH individuals because you can use gesture/sign language - and learn another Signed Language at the same time! #DeafGain
These are just a few things about being Deaf/DeafBlind/HOH - I will continue to add to this list.
