Maybe I'm making this up, but Stag uses the same lightning bolts against the deans that he used against spectres.
And the way their hardened tentacles crack is similar to the way withering souls crack.
How likely is it that all the paranormal abilities of the deans are actually spectral? This would imply that they were once alive. Mortal.
Although this is not the first time something like this has happened to a supposedly non-human character working at the academy. so. idk.

part 1 2
Deans come back I want answers
Where is Will
Who is Will
What is Will
The deans not being invulnerable is truly a fascinating detail. Possibly my favourite in the past few months (aside from Lenore’s spectre) because it’s opened up a load of space for theories.
Maybe the main cast kill the deans in the end. Maybe they’re mortally wounded at some point. Maybe they were deceased souls (soul?) at some point who then created Nevermore
hey look on the bright side
were gonna be able to tell the deans apart easier now
"Ten demerits"
MOTHER FUCKER FOR WHAT??? FOR WHAT THOUGH-
I love how that's one of the first things he does when we get the deans back, assign demerits for BREATHING.
