I think a lot of the fandom just forgot how batshit insane Light was about L, especially when L reveals who he is when they meet in college.
I'm currently rewatching death note and this is specifically about episode 9 and the first five minutes of episode 10, because everyone on this site has already said that if he just acted how if he acted like the son of the police chief, he could have avoided a lot of what happens in the plot.
Execpt. He did.
(putting a cut here cause who knows how long this will be)
When L revealed who he was after the entrance ceremony, Lights FIRST thought was 'how would the son of Soichiro Yagami react' just on the simple basis that this guy knows that about him, whether or not he is actually L or not. The entire time he acts respectable towards someone who has been led to believe is his father's boss.
Then he goes home, goes to his room, and has a fucking mental breakdown.
Light is so insane about L that he breaks down at the fact that L has put him in such a corner that he can't do anything about, as that would lead people into suspecting him, even though L hasn't even told the task force he's even doing this, and it such a change on how he normally reacts to things that even Ryuk notices it enough for it to be brought to his attention.
And then after this, he gets invited to play tennis with L, and immediately starts the whole 'would he thinks I'm Kira if...' when he's thinking about asking if L is British or not, right after he said he was a British champion.
I do believe that Light was somewhat fucked up from the beginning, seeing that he is very comfortable with God talk, but I genuinely think that moment, when he being insane over L, just broke him.
Danger: extreme favourite scene yapping, proceed with caution
Like, come on. We are just recovering from seeing that Soichiro is the hospital from a non-kira induced heart attack, and the we are sprung with the fact that Naomi has been missing for 4 months. ╥﹏╥
Then, tapes of Kira are being spread around on Sakura TV, so we are all like hmm, I wonder why Light has he taken this news station as hostage.
Soon, you are watching the second tape and it's very disorienting, like is this actually Light? Then, the channels start changing and you see that Kira is killing hosts of other broadcast stations, and L needs to pull out more TVs,,,,,,
Then L, now realising the situation, telling all of them to try and shut down the broadcast with Matsuda going straight to call the front desk and Aizawa calling some insiders that he knows and getting nothing.
Kira going on to say that he wants the police as ally's (°▽°) (this ain't Light. who is this bitch and what are they doing?)
Seeing how Soichiro is doing at the hospital and Sachiko just not enjoying what she is seeing, but let's him watch to ensure he still on top of his case.
Ukita's death! ╥﹏╥ Such a forgetable character, but this has so much purpose of showing no one is safe in this, people will die, and you may not like it. Also him trying to press the button on his belt and not being able to as he is collapsing :(
The task forces reaction to his death, ughhhh, L desperately trying to keep everyone at bay, Matsuda just barely holding himself together, Aizawa's first instinct to go out and do something, L stopping so he wouldn't get himself killed. This whole scene is just so well done. L curling into a ball after Aizawa grabs him ╥﹏╥
The realisation of us knowing that its definitely not Light because they can kill with only a face
Soichiro breaking out of the fucking hospital and driving a fucking TRUCK through the TV station is something that is never talked about and needs to be talked about.
L duel wielding phones, making plans to ensure Soichiro will come out of the station alive :_)
The police publicly refusing to co-operate with Kira was expected, but them knowingly putting themselves in danger in order to do so is just,,,,,
Shout out to the man, delivering this new out to the public and agreeing with them too. Kobe Takabara, you the man :3
L being very thankful about Soichiro's sacrifice was very nice to see.
Again, Aizawa having more insider ties is something I wish we explored more.
The final confirmation that it isn't Light and L finding out exactly as he says it is, one of my favourite things they do together :)
L being like, 'it would totally suck if I was killed by fake Kira, and not the real deal'
