It Is Not Death That A Man Should Fear...
CW: cancer, character death
Lily met Sophie the day she was first hospitalized.
The other girl was taller than her, with brown hair that was cut just above her shoulders, and eyes the color of the ocean that was outside her house. When they first met, Lily had asked her what she was there for.
“I’ve been in and out of hospitals for a long time. It’s never really one thing.” she shrugged. “What about you?”
“Leukemia. It came back recently, so they decided to hospitalize me and monitor me in case it gets worse.” Lily responded.
While she had expected the usual ‘I’m so sorry’ and ‘how awful’ that she usually received when she told others of her cancer, Sophie didn’t bat an eye, but walked over to sit next to her on the couch in the main rec room that the other teenagers well enough to leave their rooms would congregate in.
“That really sucks. Hey, I’ve been looking for someone to play me at Foosball. Are you any good?” she asked, her eyebrows wiggling in a challenge, and Lily couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yeah, I think I can manage.” she answered, and she followed Sophie over to the other corner of the room.
She saw Sophie many more times over the next year, finding herself in and out of that hospital many more times before her cancer began to get stronger and she ended up being hospitalized indefinitely. After that, the two became close friends; Lily would join Sophie in the rec room to play Foosball and other games when she was well enough, and Sophie would bring her movies, food, and other gifts, along with comfort her during her worse days.
One afternoon Sophie knocked on Lily’s door, a takeout bag from the local diner in her hand, and Lily smiled apologetically at her.
“Thanks, but I’m not really hungry right now. I just got done with a round of chemo.” she sighed, and Sophie’s smile faded, replaced with sorrow and concern.
“Oh yeah? How are you feeling?” she asked, sitting next to her.
“I’m sure you can imagine. I’m sorry you went to the trouble of getting food.” Lily apologized, and her friend waved her hand in a nonchalant manner.
“Don’t mention it. I just want to help you feel better.” she admitted, and Lily was surprised to feel a blush creeping up the back of her neck and stopping at her cheeks. Sophie looked back at her, and smiled upon seeing her face.
Lily hesitated for a moment. She knew she didn’t look the same as she had when they met, her light brown hair having fallen out a few months ago and her face more gaunt, with circles under her gray eyes, but she made up her mind and quickly placed her hand over Sophie’s, and was warmed by the sight of Sophie swallowing nervously, a slight blush appearing on her own face.
“You know I.... I would um, kiss you, if you wanted... but...” she stammered, and Lily sighed.
“I know. They don’t want me to be exposed to anything. I’m pretty sure the nurses would yell at us if they saw you in here. Just promise as soon as I’m better you’ll have one ready for me.” she said, and Sophie stared down at their hands, a forlorn expression on her face for a moment before she looked up and smiled.
“Of course.”
A couple months later Lily’s leukemia took a turn for the worse, and Sophie hardly left her side as she lied in her bed, listening to the doctors try to tell her parents as quietly as possible that her chances weren’t good.
The two of them continued their new relationship as best as they could, and one night Sophie snuck into Lily’s room, bringing movies and daffodils for her. She smiled, and they spent the rest of the night watching disney movies and cheesy horror films on Sophie’s laptop while they whispered to each other and cuddled in Lily’s bed.
She looked up at her girlfriend, watching as she stared at the screen on their laps, and Lily reached up to place her hand on her cheek, causing Sophie to turn.
“I think I’d like that kiss you promised me now.” Lily whispered, and after what seemed like a thousand emotions crossed her face, Sophie nodded, reaching her own hand out to stroke her thumb across her girlfriend’s cheek.
The kiss was sweet and tender, and after a few more Sophie gently kissed Lily’s forehead too, smiling down at her. As Lily’s eyelids grew heavy and she drifted off to sleep, Sophie pulled her closer, and Lily couldn’t remember when she last felt this happy, this safe, this alive.
When she woke up, the sun was shining through the window, and Lily was amazed at how good she felt. It seemed like all the aches and pains she experienced were gone, replaced with energy she forgot she even had.
Jumping up, she noticed Sophie standing in the doorway, and ran over to her with a grin. Her girlfriend immediately pulled her into a kiss, and when they broke apart Lily laughed.
“How do you feel?” Sophie asked her with a loving smile, and Lily shrugged with joy.
“Fantastic! It’s like... like...” she began, and suddenly trailed off, noticing that the sunlight seemed just a little too bright, the room a little too white and perfect, and the flowers she knew Sophie had brought her last night were nowhere to be found. In fact, all her belongings were gone, and when she put a hand on her head she found her hair had grown back.
“Something’s wrong...” she whispered, nervous, and Sophie sighed sadly, taking a piece of paper out of her jacket pocket.
“Last night at 5:37 a.m., you, Lily Elaine Knoll, passed away in your sleep.” she read. “And I’m here to collect you.”
Lily watched in surprise and shock as Sophie snapped her fingers, the paper disappearing and being replaced with a ornate scythe, its blade decorated with ivy vines and daffodils, and it’s handle carved with various markings and designs.
“Sophie?” Lily asked, and her girlfriend leaned on the scythe, her eyes apologetic.
“That day we met, I was collecting another soul in the hospital, and ran into you on accident. I could see you were going to die in the coming year, and should never have even shown myself, but...” she began to explain, and Lily sat on the bed, dumbfounded. “I-I’ve been around for a long time, you know. And I just hadn’t met someone like you in a long, long time.”
Lily looked up at her girlfriend, who looked down at her feet in shame, and folded her hands in her lap.
“So... you’re Death then.” she finally responded, and Sophie nodded.
“I’m not the only manifestation, but yeah, I am.” she answered, and Lily carefully got up and stood in front of her. She looked over her, thinking of all the nights they spent talking, their ongoing tally of wins against each other at Foosball, and the food and movie dates they had had in Lily’s hospital room.
“Can you tell me one thing?” she asked quietly, and Sophie nodded.
“Anything.” she replied.
“Do you really, truly love me?” Sophie smiled slowly, putting out her hand for Lily to take.
“With all my heart and soul. When we cross, I still want to be with you, if you’ll have me.” she responded, and Lily smiled, placing her hand in Sophie’s.
“Of course.”
This is the first time I’ve written something like this, so tell me what you think! I’m sure my writing of Lily’s experience with her cancer and how it affects her could be better, and I’m happy to take any advice and/or improvements you can suggest. Please like and reblog!
BTW, the title comes from a quote by Marcus Aurelius.
