Pandemonium
“Pardon this interruption, we order all citizens to evacuate the city as quickly and safely as possible. There has been an explosion in a chemical plant containing biohazards chemicals. Please leave all your belongings as they might be contaminated. We are certain there will be side effects such as nausea, headaches, hallucinations, extreme hunger and desire to do the unthinkable. If you have these symptoms please go to the nearest quarantine to disinfect. Have a blessed day and may god be with you.” The message rolled in while you were busy with the preparations for today’s event. In fact, everyone you know were engrossed to the point that nobody saw the news.
The yelling of the teachers on the intercom still echoes in these once colorful walls. Dead bodies litter the bloodstained floors. Guts are everywhere; looking like a mural you might find in an alleyway. Last night’s dinner is threating to come up as you see these familiar faces on the ground, lifeless. Stepping over your wonderful teachers’ corpse, you hold in the sobs threating to come out. It was supposed to be the greatest day of your life. The day where you were finally free from the many stressful days you wasted. Today was to be the day when you said goodbye to your classmates and the upbeat professors. Graduation day is the anticipated event where you can burn the hard work you’ve done. Why couldn’t it go as planned? Everything was perfect, from the stage to the venue. Now, it’s just a monument for everyone to see and remember the tragic day.
Fleeing from the disfigured faces, a sudden realization strikes you. Mom is all alone in the house. “Has she seen the news?” “Did she get to a safe place?” “Is she in a quarantine?” “God forbid that she is dead.” All these ungodly thoughts rushed in without a second thought. In hastiness, you reach for the keys. Unlocking the door, bracing yourself for the unexpected. Home is the same as you left it for the big day. In turmoil, you go to your parents’ room. A lumpy figure is in the bed, as if she never left. With a shaky hand, you uncover the sheets. There in the bed is your scared dog hiding underneath the sheets. Foam is coming out of his mouth. Knowing the dangers of the rabid dog, you run with teary eyes.
Yelling mom all around the house, there is no single response of “I’m here honey.” Dizzy spells begin in your body. Keeping a steady walk, you walk to the front porch. Chaos has struck the once peaceful streets. Where everyone hanged out to a nice barbeque, going from doors to doors to get a cup of sugar. Now there is no trust, no honesty, and no peacefulness. Losing your balance, you fell to your knees, mumbling incoherent thoughts on the scene before you. Neighbors tripping over the bodies that have fallen victim to the dishonesty that plagued the neighborhood. Children on top of their parents crying “Where is tony?” “My doggy is crying for me” “Put me down ma I want to hug spike.” Rabid dogs on the loose, attacking whoever comes there way. Lost to the infection that has spread throughout the urban city.
Mama was the only thing you can focus right now. No matter how difficult it was turning your head away from the upheaval scene. Dashing to the streets, you keep on surveying the scene for the loving face of your mother. All the dishonesty makes you feel unsafe. You do not want to continue your mission anymore. You want to crawl up your bed and never leave the room. No, you have to see your mama no matter the circumstances she might be. With all your might, moving forward to the destructive neighborhood before you. Singing a little tune, worriedness never came, as you kept calm. Scenarios of your mama condition run through. Nothing is stopping you from crying your heart out. As you are saving it.
Citizens running with foam in their mouths, holding their jaws as it was about to fall out of there socket. Others holding their guts in with the threat of death looming over their head. Blood splatters are everywhere it’s nearly impossible to see the pristine concrete. Gory images an inevitable scene to witness. Wondering if one of the many disfigured faces is your mama. God help me find my mama, praying is your only option. With no skills at surviving the mess, you keep running with your eyes focusing on one thing, your mama.
Mama where are you? I want to see you. I need a hug right now mama. Are you safe? Do you feel safe? Mama, are you even alive? Mama! Tears are streaming down your face thinking the unanswered questions. Why did it the explosion have to happen today or at all? So many questions are whirling through the pandemonium. Mama could have been here to witness the proud of the moment of you walking the stage. The principle handing you your diploma with a smile “You done it, you can now be free from the stress.” The simplest dream, are destroyed by the unavoidable.
It only has been eight hours since the explosion. Enough for pedestrians to take advantage of the fallen city. Faith in humanity is now extinct; there is no such thing as having a pleasant conversation. Obstacles are coming towards your missions to find your mama. Citizens acting rashly killed all the government officials. Anarchy has risen up; no one is safe in the city. Lunatics and serial killers are now in the free world with the infectious disease. Nothing is stopping their lustful desires. Dangers are on every corner.
Head up, you spotted a quarantine with familiar faces. Rubbing your eyes, you thought it was impossible that so many of your friends are alive. Sprinting through the infected people, meeting up with your friends. Asking so many questions, none can give the answer you wanted. They have not seen your mom since the fitting. Which was about a week ago at the maximum. Hope is slowly decreasing with negative thoughts. Keeping calm, you walk towards the nurses asking if they have seen a woman that looks exactly like you, just a slightly taller. No response from them. Resting the urge to cry, you run away from the negative of the site. Blinded with wordiness, you walked into a danger zone.
Walking forwards, you keep surveying for the warm eyes of mama with conscious. Hidden in plain sight, landmines planted, men and woman armed, armor vehicles are in use with no one stopping them. Trying to sneak through the many taps, you set off an alarm. Instantly, deranged womans surrounded you with knives in there hand. Shouting many obscene phrases in many languages towards you. One by one, they started jumping at you. Swiftly dodging the attacks, you failed to realize your mistake. Men were perched on top of the building ready with their snipers. Seeing your mistake, they shoot with hopes of seeing your fallen body. Knees buckled forward as the bullet scraped your ear. Moving frantically in your short battle had kept you safe from that bullet. Knowing that you cannot let an opening happen, you played smart with them.
Nearly escaping the gang, you run into a familiar face. A relieved sigh, as it was your most trusted friend since middle school. A look in his eyes makes you wonder if he is infected. No matter, you still asked if he has seen your mama. A pregnant pause, as he opened his mouth to give his response, foam seeped through the cracks of his teeth. There in front of you was an infected person. Not knowing what to do, you touched his arm to see his reaction. He jerked back as if was having a seizure. Then you softly spoke to him to see if he can talk. All there was is him mumbling there are demons everywhere we are not safe here. He was far gone in the infectious disease he has no recollection of the happing around the city. You have to leave your friend, as he was now dangerous.
It has been twelve hours since the explosion; there is no more hope of finding mama. Probably you passed her without knowing in the carnage. There were so many disfigured faces in the neighborhood it was pointless to see who is who. You just want to go home and surround yourself with the sweet aroma of your mama. To see the many albums to remember your mama smile. Mission is a failure, mama has not been found. Heading home, avoiding the red flags of the city. You arrived saw safe for now. Heading towards the family room, you reach for your favorite picture of your mama. Where she shined with the joyful smile when she was holding your baby self. Not holding back, you cried your heart out for mama.
