The world ended on a Tuesday in November, days after Halloween, when the sun was less than an hour away from setting. Chan had just left his dorm’s building, late to his History of Dance 136A lecture, when it happened. You hadn’t been as lucky on the day the world began to crumble.
Hello! Since I feel weird to reblog a reblog or reply with my main acc, I decided to say hi and response collectively like this (I hope it’s okay.) And this is not only for the mentioned readers, but also all of my readers (this feels weird…? My...? duh.)
So. Thank you sooooo much for the kind words and all the love. I don’t have much to say, just that I feel privileged and furiously happy. Like, all the incoherent words and the caps…?! I feel giggly.
And the special thank you will be given to @deathbyseventeen @younghee-17 @wonusmile @hoonimagines @svtdokyeomsblog @planningwords and of course, my beta @xpiridoxine
One more thing, before I faint from awkwardness, to answer @planningwords quick question about y/n’s occupation prior to the accident, she’s a housewife. She decided to retire from her previous job once she’s married (She’s always wanted this). She has other things to do at home, though, you’ll have the idea of what those are from the new chapter. I think that’s enough…? All I’m gonna say is that I’m glad you asked the job she has before the accident, not the marriage, because that’s a story for another time.

< A/N > Ah the first story(?) I post in years... Hi
You’re wiping down the coffee table that sits in front of the television, trying to ignore the muted snow on the screen even as its reflection dances on the surface in front of you when you hear the door open. You swivel toward the door, clutching the dry cloth between your hands when Chan comes bounding in through the door with a bouquet of flowers and his knifebrella in one hand, his duffle bag slung over a shoulder, and a tired smile.
“Honey,” he calls out sweetly, quietly, after he shuts the door, “I’m home.”
“Chan,” you answer, rushing forward to embrace him after he places the duffle bag and knifebrella on the floor.
“I brought food.”
“Mmm,” you hum as your arms tighten around him, your face burrowed in his chest.
“I brought you some flowers too,” he goes on, and you feel him shift to place a kiss on your forehead. “Common, let’s push the table against the door. Then, we can go cuddle on the couch.”
You nod wordlessly, humming before detaching yourself from him to let him know that you heard him. Then accept the flowers he holds in his hands before noticing, as you move to place them on the counter, that they’re a mixture of natural and artificial flowers. Confused, you turn back to face Chan and ask him about them when your eyes lock onto the cut he has running across his left cheek, and the flowers slip from your hands.
“Chan,” you gasp, hands darting up to cover your mouth. “Wha— what happened?”
He chuckles, a hint of sadness in it, as he lifts a hand to graze the clotted wound.
“It’s not what you’re thinking.” He says it softly, almost too quietly for you to hear, but you do. “I swear.”
“What happened?” You insist, tears starting to pool in your eyes.
Blood rushes up to his face, “I fell in a bush outside.”
Silence fills the room, and it feels like a lifetime has gone by before you can think of anything to say, and even then, the words erupt from you without a second of hesitation.
“What were you doing outside?!” It comes out louder than anything you’ve said in the past month and startles you. There’s a shuffling outside and a croaking hiss that plunges the two of you into silence. And, after a moment of stressful silence, your rush to push the table against the door, Chan following you to help. It’s not until the table is firmly against the door and its accompanying chairs have been stacked over it that your voice comes back. Though, it returns in a whisper.
“Did you— Why did you— Chan.”
“I swear I wasn’t bit. I saw some flowers growing in the bushes outside, and I didn’t see any zombies—“ tears welled in your eyes again at the word, a shudder of a breath escaping you as he continued— “Don’t cry, sugar pie. Don’t cry. I heard one coming closer, got startled, and tripped on a root. I got scratched by the bush on the way down. That’s it. Nothing else.”
“Chan,” you whine, pulling him into the dorm room’s kitchen as you force your tears to dissipate, “Don’t ever do that again.”
Chan lets you run the faucet’s water and wet a corner of the drying towel to clean the cut on his cheek before speaking again. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to get you some flowers.”
“Flowers aren’t worth your life, Chan.”
“They weren’t that much of a risk. They were close to the door. I just thought...”
“No,” you insist as you pat dry his cheek, “Please, Chan. I can’t—“ you cried, “I can’t— not without you.”
Chan takes the drying towel from your hands and tosses it onto the counter behind you. A moment later, he’s hoisting you onto the counter himself and resting between your legs. He cups your cheeks and uses his thumbs to wipe the apples of your cheeks.
You aren’t crying, no. But he knows it’s only because you’re forcing yourself to keep your tears at bay.
“I’m sorry,” he says, leaning in to give you a long, gentle kiss, “I won’t do it again. I promise.”

❦❦❦❦❦❦❦❦❦❦❦❦❦
Two days.
More or less.
It all depended on how time was being counted.
You two had traveled two nights— one full day and were in the process of the second.
To you this meant two days. After all, you had left during the night. But in reality, you had only been away from home for less than two days.
But you were finally there.
After pushing each other to walk and ride trains both day and night with the least amount of sleep either of you could get away with (five hours), you were finally there.
Standing atop a dune, deep in the Dunes of the Forgotten, that even you who had been exploring them since you were a kid hadn’t known existed, with a canteen in one hand and a dry sandwich in the other, you both looked at the run-down factory remembering it all too well.
“Is… is that really it?” Joshua asked, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
You nodded. The shimmering of the sun against the building almost made you believe you were looking at a mirage.
“Yeah. I think it is.”
Gulping, you both stuffed your sandwiches in your bags without a second of doubt and stumbled down the dune.
You set off in a run through the scorching land, your eyes trained on the building ahead.
Ten minutes of nonstop running and burning throats was nothing to you two when you knew help was close.
You came to a stop in front of the set of wide doors, wheezing as you tried to catch your breath.
You knocked on the doors hesitantly. You didn’t know what to do but knocking felt like the most obvious answer. But when no answer came, your stomach started to churn.
“Try again,” Joshua told you, shifting from foot to foot.
You did and the same thing happened: nothing.
“What do we do now?” Joshua asked you, eyes glued to the knobs on the door.
Without a word, you grabbed the knob and turned it.
The door opened without any trouble and it bothered you.
Something was off.
A single looking inside sent your brain into overdrive.
It was empty.
And it wasn’t deceptively empty as it had been all those years ago— a ploy to make anyone who stumbled inside and didn’t pay attention, think that no one had ever stepped foot in there.
No.
This time, spiderwebs spread across corners and a startled bird flew around then went out the open door.
“Common,” you told Joshua.
You stepped inside gingerly and quietly, suspicious of your surroundings. For all you knew, you had just stepped into a trap.
Picking up a small rock just outside the door before it closed, you tossed it deeper into the room and when nothing happened, you let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding.
Joshua shot you a curious look.
“Just making sure… he seems like the type to plant traps.”
“Right. Well, it looks like there aren’t any here though.”
“Yeah,” you mumbled, “and that’s what worries me.”
“Should we,” Joshua motioned further ahead and you nodded.
You walked slowly, you still on high alert, and Joshua growing increasingly more aware of his surroundings as your words started to sink in.
You passed through the back door and the room you had once woken up in greeted you. It was emptier than you remembered it, no beds or cots, and cut wires were strewed across the dirt-covered floor.
The doors slammed shut behind you as you both took curious steps forward.
“It doesn’t look like anyone has been here for years,” you mumbled.
“How did so much dirt even get inside?” Joshua said, heading towards the empty space where he remembered being strapped in a cot. You followed behind him slowly.
“Stop! Stop! Don’t move!” A familiar, panicked voice filled the room.
You both froze.
An electric buzz filled the room and you both could have sworn it felt as if something was stealing your air. Then it died down but the fear in your bones kept you from moving.
Chuu came running in through the large side doors. She looked at the two of you wide-eyed and frustrated, flailing her arms around, “You threw a rock in the last room! Why didn’t you throw one here!”
You gulped, “Why did we need to throw a rock in here?”
Chuu smiled sheepishly and pointed at the corners, “Beam guns integrated into the corners. They would have been set off the moment you stepped foot anywhere near the center of the room.”
You looked down at where you were standing and where Joshua had been heading.
There were only a few steps left.
Swallowing your fear, you regarded Chuu with determination and straightened. Chuu didn’t miss the way that you swallowed before shifting on your feet.
“The last time we were here, he said that if I needed help, I could come here.”
Chuu nodded, a bright smile overtaking her face.
“I need help. We need help. Me and my friends… I came to ask him for help.”
“Okay,” Chuu nodded, “You’re going to have to wait though. We moved bases. I’m only here because I’m supposed to be watching this base.”
“He isn’t here?”
Chuu shook her head.
“How long will it take for him to get here?” You asked, “We’re running out of time.”
Chuu studied you for a moment before answering, “It’ll be a couple of hours but he’ll get here before nightfall.”
A squeak left your throat and Joshua laid a hand on your shoulder, “It’s alright. A couple of hours is alright.”
You nodded.
“Then if you’ll follow me. You can wait upstairs in his old office with me,” Chuu said, bouncing on her feet.
Author’s Notes: My biggest post of the year? Nope that goes to the Steampunk!Hoshi x Technological!Reader fic I believe. Anyways, this post is 2 years in the making so I hope it gets some love!
In what could only be described as a small ballroom, though in reality it was just a more-than-large bedroom, a twenty-one-year-old, amber haired boy, stared attentively at the oval-shaped standing mirror that held his smirking reflection.
Without taking his eyes off it, his right hand reached over to the glossy mahogany counter next to him. His fingers trailed carefully over the items on it. A silver ring in need of polishing, a simple gold chain necklace, a single silver-plated cross piercing.
He could tell what they were without having to look at them, with just the tips of his fingers.
It wasn’t long before he came across the gold-encrusted Rolex he was looking for. Without taking his eyes off his reflection, he managed to put it on. It was then that he stopped staring at himself, if only the reflection of his face, and admired the reflection of the gold watch on his wrist.
“Looking good,” he whispered to himself.
A knock came from the door, “Joshua?”
“Come in,” he answered.
It was his friends, though he really only saw them as acquaintances. Y/N L/N, only two years younger than him, dressed in an expensive gala outfit, came through the door. Your simple black flats made a padding sound against the polished, hardwood, dark mahogany floor. Yoon Jeonghan, in his own expensive dark gray blazer, cotton slacks, and black oxfords, walked in behind you.
“Joshua, oh,” you stopped for a second taking him in, “you’re already ready?”
“Of course,” he answered as he pulled on and popped his blazer.
“Great.” You replied happily, bouncing on your flats. “My parents sent our driver to take us to the Christmas charity gala. It starts in two hours but we’re suppos—”
“Let me stop you there,” Joshua interrupted you, “I didn’t even know there was some gala our parents wanted us to go to.”
“But—”
“I’m actually going to Nayoung’s yacht party. Started when the sun went down. I’m late.”
Joshua turned away from his reflection, for the first time since he had begun dressing, to look at you and Jeonghan. “I was wondering why you guys were here.”
Truth be told he had known both of you since you were babies, but still, he managed to forget about you both all the time.
Jeonghan let out a huff, not bothering to hide his annoyance. “We’ve had to attend this gala since we were thirteen. And you’re ditching it to go to Nayoung’s tantrum party? You get she’s only throwing that to get on her parents' nerves.”
“Yeah,” Joshua smirked, “but there’ll be tons of hot girls there.”
He grabbed a bottle of cologne and spritzed it on himself. “Why aren’t you guys ditching? Oh…,” he trailed off suddenly looking at the both of you pityingly, “were you guys not invited?”
While you looked at Joshua with hurt written all over your face, Jeonghan looked at him challengingly, an eyebrow raising.
He laughed as if Jeonghan were only joking around, “Like I said, I’m late. So, lock the front door when you let yourselves out, yeah?” He brushed past you both, not bothering to close the door and a few seconds later the sound of the front door slamming shut echoed throughout his house.
You turned to Jeonghan. But, before you could speak, he lifted a finger to ask you to wait. A second later, the sound of an engine could be heard roaring to life and racing down the streets. _______________________________________________________________________
You and Jeonghan sat on velvet, red cushion chairs, in front of a circular table that had twelve dinner plates and an assortment of glasses and cutlery lining it, along with a poinsettia bouquet as a centerpiece. There were place cards on each plate. You stared sadly at the one on your left.
The place card had Joshua’s name on it.
“Y/N,” Jeonghan whined. He nuzzled his face onto your right shoulder and he wrapped his arms around your waist. “He’s not worth it. He’s only gotten worse since we were kids.”
“I still like him though,” you answered sadly, reaching to grab the place card and hide it into the bouquet of Christmas flowers.
“No one should like bratty rich kids, especially you, Miss Donates-Money-Every-Week.” He pushed himself off of you and righted himself in his own chair. “He’s not worth it.” He mumbled playing with a ring on his left hand’s index finger.
You drooped like a flower without water. “I know.”
“Hey, guys!” A cheery voice came up behind you guys, making you jump.
“Xiyeon, Roa, hi,” you greeted with a smile.
“You’re early, that’s great!” Xiyeon bounced.
“I’m sorry for her,” Roa smiled, “she’s a bit excited since this is her training year before she joins me on the committee.” She gestured at their matching outfits: red, high-waisted, wide-leg dress pants and simple white button shirts. The only difference in their outfits being their hairstyles. Roa had straight black hair with bangs. Xiyeon had wavy long black hair.
“I’m sorry to intrude, but I couldn’t help but notice that you weren’t part of the committee this year. You’re always a member of the committee.” You could feel the unspoken question lingering in the air.
“Yes, well, I decided that I wanted to sit with my friend in the back this year and participate in the festivities.”
“Wonderful,” She smiled. “We should get going, double-check everything is ready before the gala starts. Xiyeon.”
“Wait,” She said as Roa began to walk away, “This seat doesn’t have a place card.”
“No one must have been assigned to that seat.” Jeonghan laughed, running a hand through his dyed, white hair.
“No, there was. I remember. I memorized the seating chart. It was….” Xiyeon said, concentrating on the plate, willing the name to return.
“Joshua’s ditching again, correct?” Roa, provided before Xiyeon could remember, lips in a thin smile. She looked at you expectantly for an answer.
“No,” You replied.
“Place card in the bouquet?”
“...Yes,” You nodded finally, giving in.
Roa extended an arm towards you, “The only reason I continue to order a place card for him is to keep appearances.”
You nodded wordlessly and took the place card you had hidden in the bouquet to hand to her.
She looked at it for a second before ripping it in half. “You look beautiful in that knee-length dress, Y/N. Silk for the bodice and tulle for the bottom, right?” She hummed suddenly, “Are those diamonds on the waistband? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear something so expensive before.”
She nodded at you both, “Come along, Xiyeon.”
When they were gone you looked at Jeonghan with a forlorn on your face.
“Oh look, they decorated the Christmas tree so nicely this year,” he nodded to the front of the ballroom, where at the top of a grand staircase with red velvet carpet sat a large Christmas tree.
It was surrounded by tables where the objects that were going to be put for auction at the end of the dinner had been placed. On one of them, a shiny, silver men’s watch caught your eye.
Joshua got to Nayoung’s yacht party when it was already in full swing. Christmas lights decorated its side and strobe lights cast lines of colorful light into the sky. Music could be heard pounding against the metal of the boat and reverberating into the ocean. Its surface rippled as the people inside the yacht raved.
On the dock, the captain’s first mate waited for the last guest. He stood beside the white, metal boarding steps that led onboard, stone-faced and alone. He knew perfectly well who they were forcing him to wait for.
After haphazardly parking his car, Joshua smirkingly strode up to the boarding steps, ignoring the first mate.
“Name?” The first mate asked as he stepped in front of Joshua and blocked his path. He looked down at the clipboard in his hands, studying it like Joshua wasn’t actually late.
“Joshua Hong,” Joshua answered brusquely. He paused for a second, glaring at the first mate, dusting off his form-fitting, black blazer passive-aggressively even though he wasn’t watching. Then, without waiting for the first mate to allow him onto the yacht, he stepped onto the boarding steps and made his way up.
Clenching his teeth, the first mate followed behind him and motioned at the crew at the top to alert the Captain that they would soon be ready to leave dock.
Joshua smirked when he stepped on deck. Nayoung leaned against a white wall in a tight, small black dress. Her long black hair splayed over her shoulders.
“Fashionably late?” She asked teasingly, twirling a piece of her hair.
“Reasonably late,” He corrected with a sly smile, throwing her a wink.
“You’re the last one. Now we can leave the dock.”
“Let's get the party started,” Joshua cheered. Without a second to waste, he grabbed her hand and pulled her into the heart of the party.
He skipped the dance floor and threw some winks and lip bites at a group of girls that were grinding against their partners until he reached the bar.
“Two whiskeys,” He ordered, yelling over the music, “and make it quick.”
Nayoung seated herself on the stool to his left and tapped her fingers against the marble tabletop. When the two glasses of whiskey were placed in front of them, Joshua turned to the bartender and snapped at him.
“Bring the bottle. Did you think this would be enough?”
The bartender went scurrying off. In the few seconds it took for them to come back with the bottle, Joshua and Nayoung had already finished their drinks.
Joshua, liking the burn going down his throat, turned to Nayoung, and smirking said, “Let’s get shit faced.”
The master clock on board the ship ticked 11:50pm when Joshua Hong decided that he was done partying for the day. It was the earliest he had ever decided to leave a party. But, with the concoction that was brewing in the pit of his stomach-- a combination of whiskey and tequila, he felt like he needed to go to sleep as soon as possible.
It was something he had never felt before even when he drank more than he thought he did that night.
He felt weird.
He felt odd.
So, he found himself feeling his way down into the cabins, his face against the cool, white, metal walls. The sound of the engines running traveled up the walls and through his body. He took small steps, his feet feeling out the grooves of the carpet as to not fall.
Then, when he reached the stairs that led below deck, he sat down and took his descent one step at a time. After all, everything was blurry and he felt like something was pulling his body forward rather than he moving it forward.
Seungcheol Choi was freezing his ass off, to say the least. While the sea mist sprayed his face, the sea breeze slapped it. Even in his large black coat, thick work pants, and heavy work boots, he could still feel the cold air seeping through and clinging to his body.
He felt like he could say that in his twenty-two years of life he had never felt anything as cold as the sea at night, during winter.
“I fu-fucking hate this,” Jihoon Lee stuttered, the cold of the sea, hitting his face. His teeth chattered, and with crossed arms he folded into himself, trying to keep warm. The clothes he wore, almost an exact copy of Seungcheol’s, failed to keep him warm as well. The black beanie on his head was a small solace.
He was twenty-one and in as much danger of getting arrested as Seungcheol was.
“W-We should have stolen a better boat,” he said, shivering. “Or m-maybe none at all,” he grumbled.
Seungcheol cupped his hands together and blew the warmest air he could into them. “We have no choice. We do this and we have the money we need to give our family a real Christmas dinner.”
He looked at Jihoon, “A Christmas dinner, Ji. Just one. One. For our brothers.”
Jihoon nodded, running his hands down his red face. There was nothing more for Jihoon to say. He understood what Seungcheol was trying to do and although he thought there were thousands of ways that it could wrong...
“Now,” Seungcheol told him.
Jihoon nodded. He pulled the string that started their small boat’s engine and steered it towards the yacht they had been eyeing all night long. He stopped under a row of portholes on the side of that looked deserted. The side that was hidden from those on land but not those farther out in the sea.
“We can use these as steps to get into the boat,” Seungcheol nodded at Jihoon’s observation.
“You stay here. I’ll go alone.”
Jihoon balked. “What?”
“I’m going alone.”
“That’s too dangerous. I’ll go with you.”
Seungcheol smiled, “You’re staying here.” Then, ignoring Jihoon’s cries of protest, he pushed himself onto the first porthole.
Groaning, Jihoon maneuvered himself underneath Seungcheol and began pushing him upwards, helping him reach the next porthole.
Then, Seungcheol stumbled over the railing and into the boat. When he gathered his bearings, he looked over the railing, gave Jihoon a thumbs up and mouthed for him to stay.
After a moment, he gave his back to Jihoon and let out a sigh of relief.
If anything went wrong and he went down, at least he would go down alone.
Taking steps forwards was troubling for him. The sea rocked the yacht and it made him feel as if at any moment he would be thrown over the railing and into the ocean.
He supported himself against the wall and took big steps forward, hoping that it would mean things would go by faster. To his relief, he didn’t have to walk far before he found a door labeled “Hallway to Cabin Stairway.”
He grinned like a madman as he pulled the door open and fell forward. The hallway looked impossibly long. Like before, he took a deep breath and then giant steps forward, quickly now, wanting to reach the stairwell.
When he reached it and began his descent, he practically skipped over most of the steps. If anyone had been there to watch him they would say he fell down the stairs. But Seungcheol, he flew down the stairs because of his strong will to get the job down.
He rested at the bottom for a couple seconds, hand against the wall, watching as the hallways rocked from side to side.
Until they didn’t.
A shuddering breath left him as he pushed himself off the wall and walked down the rest of the hall and through the door and into the cabins hall. He tried the first door on his left-- locked. Then the one on the right-- locked.
He let out a frustrated huff but kept walking forward.
The next door, the one on his right was already slightly ajar.
He grinned.
He pushed the door open and almost danced in giddiness. An arrange of coats and purses were lying across the large cabin. It was a room larger than any he had ever seen, bigger than any room he had ever been in. It almost made him angry. But, the possibility of the loot in front of him drove the anger away, if only for a moment.
He dove forward, grabbed the first bag he saw and dug through it. One hundred and fifty dollars.
“Rich people,” he laughed.
It took him five minutes in all his giddy happiness to dig through all the coats and bags. It was 11:58 when he finished; and, with his own bag clutched in his hands, he scurried out of the room and headed to the one directly across from it.
The door was closed but unlocked. It was pitch black when he opened the door. His fingers felt around the wall for a switch. Then froze when the lights came on.
Another man his age, he guessed, whined at the sudden influx of light. He sat up and glared at Seungcheol, taking him for a crew member. “Turn off the fucking lights.”
Seungcheol nodded and did as told. He took some steps backward, backed into the hallway, and closed the door before another word could be said. He had just opened the next door when the man from before came tumbling out, pointing a finger at him.
“Fucking thief!” Crap.
The guy looked horrible as if he were about to hurl. Yet despite his obvious illness, the guy stumbled forward and shoved Seungcheol into the door frame.
Groaning because the back of his head hit the frame, Seungcheol dropped to his knees and crawled down the hallway. He narrowly avoided the swift quick that the guy aimed at him.
Then the rocking came back.
Seungcheol stood up and stumbled forward, throwing a punch. It hit the guy’s nose and sent him stumbling backward. The man fell to the floor.
It took almost no time for him to stand up and throw a punch himself. He missed but it grazed Seungcheol’s mouth.
Seungcheol laughed. He could feel a trickle of blood trailing from the corner of his mouth.
Like bulls, they charged at each other. Each of them aiming at the faces of the other.
Stalemate.
In an act of desperation, Seungcheol lunged at the man and kicked him in the gut. The man stumbled backward and hit the back of his head against a door frame again.
Then, as Seungcheol neared the man and readied to kick him once more, a rumbling sound filled the halls and the boat rocked harder than it ever had before.
They didn’t notice.
Water started to seep through the doors of the upper hallway. It slithered down the velvety, red carpet and down the stairwell. A puddle began forming on the carpet of the hallway until even that became a stream. Even Seungcheol’s bag of loot started to drift from where he had dropped it when the man first hit him. It wasn't until they both pushed each other and fell face-first onto the floor that they realized water was beginning to accumulate.
To their dismay, it was too late. Not a minute after they both dizzily stood up did a canon of water shoot down from the stairwell.
You paced back and forth in the dimly lit hallway of the emergency waiting room of a hospital.
It was four in the morning and the lights were yet to be turned on. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t anybody in the hospital. Even besides the patients, doctors, and nurses, there was a group of raggedy dressed young men sitting on some of the area’s chairs.
Nayoung Lim was sitting a couple of seats away from where Jeonghan had taken a seat, a towel wrapped around her soaked body.
The gala had been nearing its end when you had gotten a call on your cell. 12:30 am and Joshua’s parents were frantically screaming for you to go to the hospital over the phone.
Joshua had been in a sinking yacht. He had been rescued, unconscious, and with water in his lungs, from the hallway of the sleeping quarters the boat.
What had he been doing there? His blood was heavily intoxicated! He was supposed to be at the gala with you and Jeonghan!
The tears came almost instantly and instead of words, hiccuped gasps escaped you. From that, they gathered almost instantly that you weren’t responsible for whatever their son was going through.
Jeonghan had stolen the phone from your hands and brought it up to his own ears. He asked what was wrong after noticing it was Joshua’s mother on the phone.
It was Jeonghan that dragged you to your family’s limo.
It was Jeonghan that told the driver where to go.
It was Jeonghan that kept you from screaming your lungs off at Nayoung.
“Look we want to apologize,” a tall boy with round glasses stood up from his seat, “your friend probably got stuck there because of our brother—”
“Your thief of a fucking brother. He was stealing my friend’s property! Joshua is here because of him.”
“Oh, shut up! It's your fault Joshua was even there in the first place!” You yelled, turning around to lunge at her.
Jeonghan sprang to his feet and blocked your path, holding you back by pinning your arms to your sides.
“My fault?” She scoffed, “Joshua’s a big boy, he can make his own choices; and want a big boy he is.” She smirked flipping her hair over her shoulder.
Rage seethed through you. Everything was tinted red in your vision but, Jeonghan didn’t let you act on it.
Nayoung smirked at your restrained state. Then, remembering where she was and who was there. She turned to the group of six boys and glowered at them, “Consider yourself fucking sued.”
Before you could yell at her again, Jeonghan spoke, “For what?” He scoffed, “For coming to see their brother at the hospital? There’s nothing wrong with that.”
“Their brother--”
“Their brother did nothing. You’re the sole person responsible for everyone on that boat,” he glared at her.
“Look at them, they’re poor! He was stealing.”
“Do you have any proof of that?” You glanced at the group of boys against the opposite wall, noting for the first time what Nayoung was referring to. Their clothes were falling apart at the seams.
Nayoung looked at him indignantly. But before she could speak, a doctor came out from the emergency room in scrubs. She looked at the room curiously then looked down at the clipboard in her hands.
“For Joshua Hong?”
“That’s me!” Nayoung practically screamed.
“That’s not true!” You growled. “We’re--” you motioned between Jeonghan and you, “the one’s here for him.”
“Alright.” The doctor interjected. “Either of you family?”
“No.” You frowned, “They aren’t here. But, his mother sent us in her place.”
“Paperwork?”
“Filed.” You said, handing her a copy of the paperwork you had to fill out when you had gotten there. You could feel Nayoung glaring behind you.
“Alright,” she said, reading over the names on the forms, “follow me.”
You smirked at Nayoung as you walked past her. Jeonghan pulled you along, forcing you to keep walking before you could do anything; and, before the doors slid closed behind you, you took a glance at the group of boys. All except one were staring at the ceiling to avoid looking in Nayoung’s direction.
They had been left in the lion's den and they knew it.
But, the short one with a chopped up black sweater was staring in your direction. His eyes were rimmed with red. You looked at each other for a few seconds before he looked away.
Then the door closed.
The doctor and Jeonghan were waiting for an elevator to come down when you caught up to them not so far away. It took you to the 20th floor where Joshua had been given his own private room.
You ran when she gave you the room number, leaving Jeonghan behind with her.
The hallway was slippery but it did nothing to stop you as you ran. The dim lighting was barely enough to look at the plaques on the walls and read their numbers. When you finally found it, you rushed inside and forgot to even close the door before breaking into tears again.
When Seungcheol woke up there were bright lights in his face and an incessant beeping in his ears. His face felt swollen and awkward but his back felt like he had been sleeping on clouds. He really didn’t want to open his eyes.
When he yawned and tried to stretch, he realized there was something holding him down. His eyes flew open. He turned his head to look down at his left hand without sitting up.
There was a girl holding his hand. A girl he had never seen before, but couldn’t help noticing was really pretty. Who was he to reject a pretty gir--
‘Wait,’ he thought to himself. He glanced down at his hand again and froze. Since when did he have such long fingers… His hand did not look like this hand he realized then screamed.
The girl beside him woke up and instantly attempted to calm him. She rubbed circles onto his hand with the pad of her thumb. With her other hand, she reached over to press the blue button that called a nurse.
“Joshua! Joshua, calm down! Please calm down. Everything's going to be okay! Joshua! Joshua!” She cried.
“Who’s Joshua?!” He screamed. “I’m not Joshua! I’m not Joshua!” As he repeated, screaming and thrashing in his bed as a nurse injected sedatives into his IV bag.
Joshua woke up groaning, twisting and turning on a bed that looked like it belonged in the trash. The springs were broken and the stuffing was spilling out from the sides. It had been slept on one too many times. Signs of its previous owners were permanently imprinted onto it.
Like a prince with a pea under his mattress, he complained until someone came into the suffocatingly dry, concrete room.
“Coups,” he heard, “What’s wrong?”
“What the hell is a Coups and what is it doing in my room,” he groaned.
“What?” He heard and this time opened his eyes. His eyes narrowed in confusion.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Coups?” They asked.
“What?” He asked this time. Suddenly, his surroundings started to come into focus and he couldn’t help but sit up in a flash. He was surrounded by four concrete walls devoid of any color. Bits of concrete were beginning to chip and when he looked at the ceiling, it looked like it was about to crumble.
“Where the hell am I?” He asked slowly. Disbelief was beginning to settle in the pit of his stomach.
He turned to look at the person who had been talking to him and balked. He didn’t know the person standing in front of him.
The boy had a long face, black hair, and round glasses. He wore clothes that didn’t fit him and were falling off of his shoulders, and he had a book in his hands.
“Who the hell are you?”
The boy didn’t have time to answer, not that he really could. He was too confused at his brother’s frantic state.
Joshua looked around again and stopped when he spotted a mirror. A boy he didn’t know was staring back at him. Long face, thick lips, big nose, black hair….
He lifted a hand to wave at the boy and when he mimicked him simultaneously, he screamed and scrambled off the bed. He ran his hands over his face and cried.
Freaked out, the boy rushed out the door and locked it. Despite being in a different room and getting farther from the first, he could still be heard screaming for someone else. “Woozi! Woozi! Something’s wrong with Coups!” The boy screamed.
Joshua took large gulps of air, trying to get his breathing under control. “This has to be a nightmare.” He whispered to himself. “I’ll just… I’ll just pinch myself. Yeah.” He did as he said, and yelped when his fingernails dug into his skin.
He started to hyperventilate.
The door opened and in walked in the boy from before, followed by a shorter, stern-looking boy.
“Who the fuck is responsible for this?!” Joshua barked at them.
The short one raised an eyebrow at him curiously. “Did what?”
“This isn’t funny, you know. I’ll freaking sue you. I’ll take the little you’ve got.”
“Sue me?” He asked. “Seungcheol what is going on?”
“Who the hell is Seungcheol?!” He screamed again, stumbling as he stood up.
The boy nodded a single time as if he had figured everything out. He turned to the boy with the round glasses, “I think has a concussion, a bit of amnesia. He should be fine after a bit of rest. It’s what the doctor said he needed, anyways.”
“Are you talking about me?” He asked frantically. “Are you talking about me?”
“Coups,” the boy began as he directed his attention at him again, “you don’t remember anything right now. That’s fine. You’ll be fine after you rest. You aren’t allowed to go to work, by the way, I already talked to your boss. It’s fine for today.”
“Work?” Joshua said, repulsed.
“Come on,” Woozi said to the other boy, “Help me get him to bed.”
Joshua looked at the bed, “There’s no way in hell I’m getting into that tick-infested death trap.” He had noticed the springs that were popping out from the fabric.
“Seungcheol, I’ve told you one too many times the bed doesn’t have any ticks!” The glasses boy whined.
“It’s obvious you’re blind if you think that thing. It’s completely tick-infested.”
The boy reeled backward, offended. Woozi shook his head exasperated.
“Go to bed,” Woozi said to him slowly. Then, he turned to the other boy, “Common, Wonwoo.”
They hurried out the door without looking back. Joshua heard ‘click’ of the lock before he could even try to go after them. He felt like a prisoner, stuck in a small room with no windows and a bed that he refused to sleep in.
He kicked at the floor with the little energy he had and slumped to the ground.
He was defeated.
He didn’t understand what was going on, where he was, or how he had even gotten there.
Seungcheol woke up with sedatives still coursing through his veins. His eyes and body felt heavy, but it didn’t stop him from sitting up and opening his eyes.
He had no recollection of what had happened the day before at the hospital, but in a second it all came rushing back to him as the blanket that had been wrapped around his shoulders fell off and the coldness of the room hit him. That and his grandiose surroundings.
He was sure he had never seen a TV as big as the one set up across from him, taking up the entire height of a wall, which he imagined was how tall castle walls were, and half of its length. In the screen’s reflection, he saw a skinny boy in a large bed, in what he imagined was silk… everything. He would have thought it was some black and white show on tv were it not for that fact that the boy was staring directly at him, quietly, in colors that really made him think of the negatives he saw when he went into the old photo print shop.
He couldn’t think of anything to say. So, he screamed.
In an instant, men and women in maid outfits rushed inside and lined up in a neat row in front of the television. They bowed their heads silently and stared at their shoes. When the silence dragged on, Seungcheol realized they were waiting for orders.
He swallowed.
Footsteps echoed into the room as they rushed closer.
He glanced at the door just as two more people rushed inside. It was the pretty girl from before, he realized, the one that had been holding his hand at the hospital.
“What happened?” He asked. He wanted to know. He needed to know. But, he didn’t want to be knocked out again the way he had been at the hospital.
.
.
.
The hospital…
“What day is it?!” He shuddered, that wasn’t his voice.
That was not his voice.
“Joshua. Joshua, please calm down.”
You approached Joshua slowly. There was an odd look in his eyes that you had never seen before.
But since the hospital had just released him, you were trying very hard to make sure he didn’t exert himself or stress himself. Not only you had thought of that, but his parents too. Who better to check up on him than a childhood “friend.”
“Do you remember anything?”
He shook his head. He didn’t dare mention that he wasn’t Joshua.
After hurrying to sit by his side, you looked at his hands hesitatingly. Your hands twitched wanting to reach out and hold them, but instead, you folded them in your lap and stared at him sadly.
“You were in an accident. You’ve been out for a few days and you sort of freaked out in the hospital.”
“Accident?”
“Yeah,” you nodded, then mumbled, “at Nayoung’s stupid yacht party.”
“Oh.” It was a single word, but behind it, he was screaming into oblivion. He wasn’t this so-called ‘Joshua’ and he would have never been on a yacht.
“Do you have a mirror?” He asked.
Your eyebrows furrowed. It was like he had amnesia. But you didn’t want Joshua to have another freak-out and you knew his room’s layout by memory, so you motioned to your right without taking your eyes off of him.
Seungcheol shifted to look where you were pointing and froze when he saw his reflection. His eyes couldn’t help but twitch. Then he shuddered at the thought he had to pretend to be the skinny boy he saw in the mirror.
“Is there anything you need?” You asked him.
“Y/N.”
Oh, he thought, so that’s your name. Then, he looked at the person next to you who had spoken. Another skinny boy, Seungcheol thought to himself, long face, thin nose, white hair, and hard eyes that seemed to be directed at him. “Let him get what he wants himself. You’re not responsible for him.”
“Jeonghan,” you sighed, “if you don’t want to be here, you don’t have to be.”
“We should both go,” he grumbled, “Joshua can take care of himself.”
Seungcheol felt a shudder run down his spine. He could feel the venom in Jeonghan’s voice, the resentment he felt for Josuha. It was coming off of him in waves as he got closer to you protectively.
“Yeah,” Seungcheol nodded, “You should go. I’ll be fine. Besides, I need to go somewhere.”
“You heard him,” Jeonghan smirked.
“What, no! You can’t!”
“Why not?” Seungcheol smiled tensely.
“The doctor said you need to rest. Besides--” you bit your lips, “You’ve been out cold for an entire day. You need to rest to gain your strength back before going anywhere.”
“I need to be somewhere though,” he grumbled.
“Doesn’t matter, you need rest and rest is what you’re going to do.” You stood up and crossed your arms over your chest stubbornly.
Seungcheol couldn’t help but look you over. From head to toe, his eyes traveled down you, furrowing at the clothes you were wearing. They looked...normal, he thought to himself. They were clothes he would have thought only people like him would wear. Not clothes rich people would wear. A tee-shirt, a thin sweater, jeans, and worn-out sneakers.
“What?” You asked, a blush creeping up your neck. It was the most attention you had ever gotten from Joshua, but he didn’t know that.
“Why are you wearing that?”
“Wearing what?” You asked, looking down at the clothes you were wearing.
“Wearing that!” He pointed at you.
“Back off, Joshua.” Jeonghan stepped up from behind you, “If Y/N wants to wear a tee shirt and jeans that’s up to her. Some of us have better ways to spend our money than buying a million-dollar pajama set.” He glared at him.
Seungcheol looked at the clothes he was wearing with wide eyes. “Wait that’s not--”
“Lock the door,” Jeonghan told the service, “those are his mother's orders. Only come to bring him lunch and dinner.”
“Common,” Jeonghan waved at the workers to leave the room after them, pulling you out without a word.
In a few seconds, far to few for Seungcheol to remember to stand up and go after them, the door was closed and locked.
There was a sway in your step as you walked up Joshua’s driveway with large, empty, reusable bags in your arms. Jeonghan lagged behind you, rubbing his eyes and yawning. He wasn’t much of an early bird and it was 5 am-- too early in Jeonghan’s opinion.
“Are you sure we should be doing this? They probably don’t even remember us or want us there,” he whined as he hid his face behind his hands.
“I think we should. Their brother was only trying to find a way to give them a Christmas dinner.” Truth be told, you hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the short boy who had been staring at you in the hospital.
“Yeah, but, taking food from Joshua’s house? Don’t get me wrong, if this is your way of getting revenge, I’m all for it.”
You laughed at Jeonghan’s words. “I just thought we could ask him if he wanted to donate some food to give.”
“I don’t think Joshua’s the type of guy to help the guy that punched him. Or even those in need.”
“You never know,” You smiled at him.
“Oh no,” Jeonghan shook his head, “we already know.”
You were nearing the steps that lead to the front door, laughing at Jeonghan’s attempt to pull you back down the driveway and away from Joshua’s house, when your steps faltered.
Jeonghan bumped into you, “Why’d you stop walking? Oh.”
You swallowed the rage you felt at the sight of Nayoung standing outside of Joshua’s front door. A maid blocked her path inside and insisted that she wasn’t allowed inside. “I am Lim Nayoung! What do you mean I’m not allowed inside! I’m Joshua’s closest friend!” She huffed and stomped her foot.
You rushed to the door when you saw her lift her foot and tilt it so she could stomp the maid’s foot.
“Didn’t you hear her? You’re not allowed inside, go away.”
“Says who?”
“Says me,” you growled.
“And Joshua’s mother.” Jeonghan piped up, walking up behind you and waving the maid away. He took her place blocking the door, arms crossed. “Go away before I call the police.”
Nayoung looked at him indignantly, her hand rising to slap him. You, at the sight of this, raised your own hand to retaliate before she could hit Jeonghan.
“What is going on here?”
You all froze. Joshua walked up behind Jeonghan, opening the other door to look at you all confusedly.
“Joshua!” Nayoung chirped, batting her eyelashes and twirling a piece of hair in her fingers. “I thought we could throw a party today but they won't let me in.”
Your heart dropped to your stomach watching the way she was acting around him and her proposal. There was no way Joshua would pass an opportunity to have a party.
“I don’t know you,” he responded, looking at her for a moment then taking a peek in your direction.
“Joshua--” she began, her voice becoming sickly sweet before Joshua cut her off.
“Look I think you should go, I’m busy here,” he said before turning around and closing the door.
You smiled at Nayoung, biting back a giggle that was threatening to escape when her face grew red. You waved at her, taunting her, to say goodbye as you pushed Jeonghan inside and slammed the door behind you.
“Yes!” You cheered, accidentally dropping your bags.
“Don’t you think Joshua’s acting a bit weird?” Jeonghan asked as you kneeled to pick up your bags.
“Weird? I just think he’s finally coming to his senses.” You grinned and nodded for him to follow you into the kitchen.
Joshua was inside, grabbing different foods from his cabinets and fridge. He placed them in bags gently, stopping every now and then to debate about what he was choosing.
You smiled faded when you saw him, “What are you doing?”
He cleared his throat, “Nothing. Just throwing out some food.”
“Throwing out?” You asked, eyeing the fabric bags he had on the kitchen island.
“Well more like taking them somewhere.” He answered, not looking up. “You didn’t have to come. In fact,” he smiled, “you should probably go now.”
“A-Actually,” you hesitated, “I was wondering if you wanted to donate some food? I was, umm, planning to go give it to that other boy who was rescued with you, and his family.”
“Y/N,” Jeonghan hissed.
Joshua’s movements between the bags and the cabinets faltered. He stopped suddenly and looked at you with a frown on his lips.
“Why would you do that?”
“Well, I just thought it would be a nice thing to do,” you whispered. “T-They missed their own Christmas Eve dinner because of the accident…” you trailed off.
Anger seemed to radiate off of Joshua.
An embarrassed blush crept up your neck.
Joshua eyed the blush creeping up your face at his staring. He placed the cans in his hands on the counter and approached you.
“Sweetheart,” He said, giving you a flirty smile. “You don’t have to do that.”
“Joshua,” Jeonghan warned him. You swallowed, face growing even redder.
“I’m sure they’re fine without the food. Why don’t you wait for me here, instead? I just have to go run an errand then I’ll be back.”
“Y/N,” Jeonghan warned but glared at Joshua.
You looked at Joshua standing not so far from you, biting his lips like he was trying to seduce you. But, you felt nothing and it surprised you. Even when Joshua smiled smugly, you could feel the wings of some butterflies in your stomach. When he flirted with other girls in front of you and Jeonghan, you always wished it was you. When you imagined it, you could feel your face growing hot.
But, right now? Nothing.
You sighed, looking down at your feet, “No. I want to take this to them.”
The smile fell from Joshua’s face. “You don’t have to.”
“I want to. You can come if you want.” You offered, snatching the food he had been putting in the bags.
In less than an hour, you found yourself sitting in front of a group of seven boys, all of them seemingly around your age, on a couch that was being held up by loose blocks of wood. They all stared at you stone-faced, except for one. Seungcheol, the boy who had been rescued along with Joshua, stared at both you and Jeonghan alternatively.
His face wasted no expense in showing you that he was mad.
Besides you, Jeonghan had his arms crossed and stared at the other boys a stone-faced as well. There was a tense silence and a smell in the air like rotting wood.
“What do you want?” The short one asked bluntly.
“Woozi!” One of the others hissed.
“No no no,” You shook your hands, “it’s okay. We, um, we brought you some food so you could have a Christmas dinner.”
“Is that so?”
“I’m sorry. Can I have a word with you?” Seungcheol growled, looking at you.
“And I to you, Woozi,” Josuha grumbled starting at the boy. You looked between them confused. You didn’t know they knew each other.
“Alright,” You nodded.
He pushed himself off the couch and sauntered into an empty room in a way that looked all too familiar to you.
“Can I help you?” You asked.
He glared at you, “Have you not realized that the Joshua sitting next to you isn’t me. Him. Me. I’m Joshua!” He stumbled, pointing to himself in the end.
“I’m sorry?” You asked, backing into the door.
“Y/N, I’m Joshua. I don’t know what’s going on or how this happened but that Joshua out there isn’t Joshua. I’m Joshua.”
“I think you might still have a concussion from the accident. Woozi!” You screamed into the hall.
Woozi came rushing into the room, glaring at both Joshua and Seungcheol while he looked between the both of them.
“I’m not him!” They both screamed, “I’m me!” They pointed at each other.
“I’ve known you since we were kids, Y/N. You’re two years younger than me and you’re a goody-two-shoes along with Jeonghan.” Seungcheol said.
“Woozi you gotta believe me, I’m Seungcheol.” Joshua pleaded, “You’re my brother, my brother.” He pleaded. “We’ve acted like parents to the rest of our brothers all of our lives. Please.”
You and Woozi alternated between Joshua and Seungcheol, studying that way that they each looked at the both of you. A glint in Seungcheol’s eyes broke you.
“Oh, I knew the flirting was too good to be true.”
“The flirting was real, Y/N,” the fake Joshua said, smirking at you, “You’re really pretty, sweetheart.” He placed a hand against your cheek only to have it slapped away by the real Joshua.
“Don’t fucking touch her. Who the hell do you think you are?” He growled.
You walked down the streets of the city with your head bowed and your sneakers squeaking against the concrete. Woozi, Seungcheol, and Joshua walked beside you all heading in the same direction.
It had taken the entire day before to come up with a plan that would help make Joshua and Seungcheol the people they were again. It hadn’t taken long to convince Jeonghan that Joshua wasn’t who you thought him to be. According to him, he had been acting “way too nice to be Joshua, I thought something was off.”
Then, to come up with a plan that didn’t make you all feel like complete idiots was a struggle all on its own.
“How much longer until we get there?” Seungch-- Joshua, the real Joshua, grumbled. “I’d like to get out of this body as soon as possible. I’ve been getting calls about having to go to work.” He shuddered.
“Work?!” The real Seungcheol gasped. “You should be at work! Not here!”
You sighed as they both started to argue with each other. You heard Woozi sigh behind you and you slowed down to walk beside him.
“I’m sorry about him.” He pointed at the real Seungcheol.
“No, it’s okay,” you sighed. “I’m sorry you had to deal with him.” You pointed at the real Joshua. “If you don’t mind me asking, why were you staring at me at the hospital?”
Woozi chuckled awkwardly, rubbing a hand against the nape of his neck, “It was nothing, really.”
“Please, tell me” you smiled.
“I was just...curious. You were wearing really fancy clothes but you weren’t acting like some rich kid like the other girl.” He laughed, looking anywhere but you.
“Oh,” you blushed.
“What are you two talking about?” The real Joshua grumbled, pausing to glare at you and Woozi.
“Nothing,” you shook your head, “Keep walking.”
“We’re already here,” he hissed through his teeth.
You looked up at the shop next to you and nodded, “Then, let’s go inside.”
It hadn’t been a second since you walked inside when a woman appeared from behind a curtain and stared at the four of you.
“Hello. This is a fortune teller’s shop, right? The one that also specializes in--”
“Witchcraft,” she said. “You two, the ones not in their own bodies, follow me,” she said, then disappeared behind the curtain.
Seungcheol and Joshua looked at the both of you wide-eyed, a hint of fear in their eyes.
“Go,” Woozi grumbled, then slumped down onto a waiting chair.
“We need to go back into our own bodies. I can’t stand being in this body anymore,” Joshua cried.
The woman stared at them with an unwavering gaze, unamused at their sentences trade-offs. Her gaze was so strong, they started to squirm under the look of her eyes.
She stood up from her seat and walked around the table, grabbing a crystal ball from a shelf. “You two got yourself into this. It’s very easy to see why you both ended up here.”
“Tell us how to go back,” Joshua whined. “I’ll pay you what you want.”
The woman sat down, dumping the crystal ball onto the table, and looked at Joshua judgingly.
“I cannot tell you how to fix your predicament,” she said, raising a hand before they could complain. “BUT, I can give you some direction by looking into your future.”
“Alright, thank you,” Seungcheol said.
The woman pursed her lips and stared into the ball, “I see white tee-shirts for the both of you. Tomorrow. They have a word stamped across its back. The letter ‘V’ and the girl you came here with.”
She stopped there and looked at them both, “Your answer lies with her. But, after tomorrow, you’ll be stuck like this forever.”
“She said our answers lie with you. Tomorrow,” Joshua huffed as he stomped past you. “What do you have going on tomorrow?”
“I-I’m volunteering tomorrow,” You stuttered as Joshua whipped his head around and his intense gaze met yours. Even with Seungcheol’s eyes, you could feel his actual eyes, “A-at the food pantry.”
“Alright,” He said, nodding to himself before shooting you a grin, “I can do that. I can definitely do that.”
“I’ll see you guys tomorrow,” he said, smiling at you before turning around to head home.
“Joshua…”
“Yeah?”
“The other way.” You smiled nervously, pointing in the direction of Seungcheol’s home.
“Riiiight,” He chuckled, turning around and heading in the opposite direction.
“What has been going on at your house?” You said to Woozi, Seungcheol staring at Joshua’s (his) receding back.
“Our youngest brother has been bullying him this entire time,” Woozi shrugged nonchalantly.
You gave him an odd look. A younger brother bullying his older brother constantly didn’t seem like something another older brother would be okay with.
“In a brotherly way!” He corrected when he saw the look you were giving him. “I think the prospect of having someone bug him like a little brother has been getting to him. He’s been doing lots of chores because of it.”
You blinked unbelievingly. Someone had actually managed to make Joshua do chores? Without blackmailing him? Someone who had literally no relation to him?
“Oh, Chan,” Seungcheol sighed, a fond smile on his face.
“Alright, well, I’ll meet you guys tomorrow to take you to the volunteer site,” you said, nodding at Woozi. “Common, Seungcheol.”
“Later, Ji,” He smiled and grabbed your hand. He pulled you in the direction of home, walking at the speed of light, and when you managed to turn around to wave at Woozi, he was already gone.
“Why in such a rush?” You laughed softly, trying to pull him into a walk.
“Well I thought we could go back to Joshua’s mansion and you could spend the rest of the day with me.”
“Spend the rest of the day with you?” You asked.
Seungcheol smiled nervously as he stopped and looked at you in the eye. You were smiling so nicely, so prettily at him that he felt he was acting like a lunatic.
You had been so nice to him before…
“I just… I’m afraid that someone will realize that I’m not Joshua the trust fund man.”
“Don’t be,” you sighed, “most people don’t even pay attention to him anymore.”
“Still,” Seungcheol shook his head and grabbed your hand, “I’d feel better if you… came home with me and helped me fit in?”
You pursed your lips as you tried not to giggle at Seungcheol’s red cheeks. He looked so bashful it was adorable.
Seungcheol held your hand as you walked down the street in the direction of his house. He swung them as you walked and winked at you every time your gaze landed on him.
“Stop,” you giggled. The day before, Seungcheol had ended up asking for your number after claiming that he wasn’t going to be able to pull off pretending to be Joshua after you were gone; and yet, after texting you once about what he would ask for lunch from the waitstaff, you ended up texting each other for hours after until you both knocked out.
Jeonghan looked at your intertwined hands quizzically, shooting you a look about it. You shook your head at him.
“We’re here!” Seungcheol cheered as you stopped in front of his house’s door.
You knocked on the metal door once before it was pulled open and Joshua stood in front of you. He smiled for a few seconds until something seemed to hit him. He stared at your intertwined hands.
“Why are you two holding hands?” His eyes narrowed.
“We’re just are,” you answered. “Ready to go?”
“Yeah,” he said slowly, “just let me go get Woozi.”
“Cheol!” You heard someone yell inside, “Help me do the dishes!”
“I can’t,” you heard Joshua yell back as he walked disappeared inside, “I have to go somewhere right now! Woozi!”
You and Jeonghan held back your giggles outside. Joshua seemed nicer now that he had been forced to live without his money. You hadn’t been around him much to see this in action but Seungcheol had gotten a text from Woozi with a video of Joshua on it. He was still grumpy of course, but that seemed more like it was because he was still in Seungcheol’s body.
“Hey, guys.” Woozi greeted you three as he walked out of the house. Joshua closed the door behind him as he exited.
“Lead the way,” Joshua mumbled, again looking at your hands. You didn’t notice though, you were too busy laughing at Seungcheol’s attempt to flirt with you.
Joshua stared at himself as Seungcheol. He couldn’t help but feel different and it wasn’t because he wasn’t in his own body. He could see himself as himself even as he was Seungcheol; and, he could see Seungcheol even as he looked like himself (Joshua).
He thought maybe it was the white tee-shirt he was wearing with the word ‘Volunteer’ inscribed on the back. But that didn’t feel completely right.
Maybe it was the fake siblings he had amassed because of this.
‘No,’ he shook his head to himself. It couldn’t have been Seungcheol’s brothers. Seungcheol’s brothers were great, not really caring that he was older than the rest of them and still forcing him to do things that older brothers would get annoyed about.
Joshua glanced down at “his” phone and turned it on. He swallowed remembering what the last thing he had been looking at was.
<< Y/N PERSONAL INSTAGRAM || NO UNKNOWNS! >>
The follow button taunted him. He knew he could request to follow you via Seungcheol but then that would mean HE wanted to follow you. He wanted to know what you were doing.
‘No!’ Joshua stopped himself. The reason he had been staring at your private Instagram account was that he wanted a glimpse into his old life. His rich life.
It definitely wasn’t because he wanted to see what you were up to.
He rolled his eyes. He couldn’t believe he was thinking about that at the moment. So he shut off his phone and took a look around the place you had brought them to. The room like a factory floor, complete with large boxes stacked up as if trying they were trying to reach the sky.
A lot of people were there, ripping boxes and putting cans and other smaller boxes into reusable fabric bags.
It was six in the morning.
He couldn’t believe so many people would be willing to wake up so early that they would be able to work at six in the morning, just to pack bags of food for other people.
You were one of those people.
“How often do you do this?” Joshua asked, swallowing back the sudden burst of fear he felt running down his chest.
“Oh just every now and then.” You answered, blushing.
“She does this every weekend,” Jeonghan answered after you. “Sometimes she switches it up though. Instead of this food pantry, she does toy drives all through September until Christmas.”
Joshua’s mouth fell into a small gape of awe.
“No big deal,” you said, laughing the attention off. “I’ll go get you guys some tags.”
When you left, Jeonghan turned to Joshua, and even though Seungcheol and Woozi were there, he told him exactly what he was thinking. “I know you’re seeing Y/N in a new light but don’t look so shellshocked. She’s done this forever. If anything you should be embarrassed to not have known this about her considering we all grew up together.”
He stopped when he saw you on your way back. In an instant, a second thought popped into his head. He wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to say but in the end, he felt like this would protect you more than hurt you.
“One more thing,” he said, turning to Joshua quickly, “don’t act or flirt with Y/N. You’ll only end up getting her hopes up and hurting her. When you get back into your body, you’ll probably end up going back to your asshole ways.”
“What are you guys talking about?” You asked, handing each of them a name tag.
“Nothing,” Jeonghan smiled at you.
“Alright well—” you handed out assignments, pointing Seungcheol and Woozi in the direction of the distribution lines and warning them that the people there liked to talk.
“Jeonghan they want you in inventory and you,” you said looking at Joshua (really ever since you found out about their predicament you couldn’t stop seeing Joshua in front of you even though it was Seungcheol’s body that was in front of you) “they said you should be in my section, we’re unboxing and packing.”
“Alright,” he said. Jeonghan, already walking past you motioned that he would be watching him.
Joshua smiled awkwardly. What the hell had he meant when he said not to get your hopes up.
Joshua was in the bathroom three hours later, taking a ten minute break and wondering how the hell you managed to do this so often. He had cuts all over his fingers and he wasn’t even sure how not to get them anymore.
He left the bathroom after twenty minutes, holding pieces of a paper towel between his fingers.
“Hey,” you greeted him as you stomped on an empty cardboard box, “what’s with the paper towels pieces?” You asked frowning and your eyebrows furrowing.
“Oh, nothing,” He chuckled nervously.
“Is that…” you trailed off, “is that blood?”
“Yeah...” Joshua answered sheepishly.
“Joshua! You should have said something!” You scolded him, “Stay here, I’ll be right back.”
“No-no, it’s nothing. It’s fine. I’m fine,” Joshua called after you as you walked away.
When you came back with a first aid kit, you pushed the towel pieces he was holding into a trash bag and got to work on his hand.
“You really should have just said something,” you mumbled, “we could have given you gloves to use.”
Joshua remained quiet as you cleaned and bandaged his hand. In the silence he had never felt before, he grew uncomfortable.
“This is really weird,” he mumbled. He thought you wouldn’t have been able to hear him, but you did.
“What is?”
“Wearing these clothes,” he answered. “Having to live and act like a poor person when I’m really not.”
“Act like a poor person?” You asked tightening the bandage. He winced. “What do you mean acting like a poor person.”
“I just—”
“Yeah, whatever,” you mumbled. In a hurry, you packed the supplies and left.
Joshua stared at your retreating form. Dread was filling the pit of his stomach. Though he knew it wasn’t because he was thinking about his predicament.
Seeing you walk away hurt because of something he said was somehow getting to him. Maybe that’s why he always walked away first, leaving you and Jeonghan behind.
So he didn’t have to see your faces.
“These are very different clothes,” he mumbled when you came back. He toyed with the jean jacket he had thrown over the shirt and gray flannel he was wearing. “They feel different from what I always wear.”
“They should,” you said, already starting to open a box of food, “they aren’t made of silk.”
“I don’t like it. It’s just not me.”
“That’s because you’re pretending to be someone else,” you grunted as you struggled to open a box, the tape being too strong for you.
Joshua, after watching you struggle, stole the box from you and dug out a switch-knife from his pockets and opened it with ease.
“Thanks.”
“Y/N,” Joshua suddenly whined, “I haven't partied in days.”
“Oh boo-hoo,” you cried, “you’re missing out on so much. Tch. I’m sure you’ll be back to partying with Nayoung and all her… friends, soon. ”
“But, I’m not,” Joshua whispered, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration, “I missed it at first, but being forced to work with Chan and Vernon--” he paused, noticing the confusion on your face, “Seungcheol’s youngest brothers.”
You hummed and went back to work.
“I don’t know,” he continued, “working with them-- it made me forget about the parties and when I did remember, it didn’t seem like such a bad thing not to be at one.”
Joshua glanced at your hands. They were moving so fast but he managed to catch that you were starting to get cuts on them, a sign of your distraction. You had been doing this too long to know how to break boxes without getting cut.
He grabbed your hands and pulled you away from the tables where you had been working. He led you into one of the hallways that were deserted while everyone was working.
“I started remembering the person I was before I…” he trailed off.
He gazed at your hand, the one he was still holding onto, then at you.
It hit him then, what Jeonghan had meant.
“I used to like you before, you know. Before.”
You were silent, staring at the hand he had yet to let go.
“I want to be Josuha again,” he cried, “But, I don’t want to go back again.”
“That’s always been your choice,” you told him, a rock stuck in your throat.
“Y/N,” he cried again, placing a hand under your chin and forcing you to look up at him.
There he was again. Joshua. Not Seungcheol but Joshua. Seungcheol’s body seemed to melt away, leaving you to look at the boy you used to know. The one that had been friends with you when you were kids. The one that used to chase you with a plastic sword, screaming that he needed to save the princess.
His brown eyes didn’t look like the ones belonging to the cocky Joshua that had walked out of his room a few days ago. Even his face, without the look he had given you and Jeonghan long before, looked kinder.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
He was like a magnet you realized. No matter how much you felt angry at him, hurt because of everything that he had done to you and Jeonghan. He was Joshua and something about him always believed that he was somewhere still inside the cockier Joshua.
He was poison.
It was the reason you had never really gone after him. You didn’t want to attach yourself to him and try to change him when that wasn’t your call to make. You couldn’t change a person.
You were so thankful that Jeonghan reminded you constantly that Joshua-- adult, Joshua, wasn’t worth your time.
He kept you from doing something stupid.
But, right now, you saw Joshua. An adult version of the kinder Joshua you knew when you were growing up and he felt more than magnetic.
You both started leaning in, like two planets revolving around each other moments away from crashing into each other, too engrossed in his feelings.
Even if he really didn’t say anything, the look in his eyes told you everything you needed to know. You were milliseconds away from his lips.
“We can’t,” you said suddenly, pulling away. Seungcheol’s image was back. “This is wrong. You’re not Joshua, you’re Seungcheol.”
“But I am Joshua.”
“No, you’re not,” you said, starting to walk away, “You’re Seungcheol.” You left Joshua in the hallway, “You’ve been Seungcheol for a couple of days and it’s already gotten to you.”
Joshua and Seungcheol sat on chairs inside of Joshua’s room, staring at the walls. Woozi, Jeonghan and you laid on Joshua’s bed contemplating what could be done.
“Maybe tomorrow we could--”
“No,” Joshua cut you off, “she said it had to be today. Today was our last day to go back.”
“One day is not fair,” you huffed, “it’s not enough.” You looked at the clock, 11:50 pm.
“I guess we didn’t find what we’re supposed to,” Seungcheol said, sinking into his chair. Joshua groaned and kicked the floor.
The room was in silence for a while before someone else spoke up.
“If I’m going to be stuck as Seungcheol for the rest of my life then I guess I won’t be seeing you guys as often anymore,” Joshua said, suddenly looking at Jeonghan and you. He sighed, “I have to apologize for the way I’ve been acting.”
“Damn right,” Jeonghan grunted, staring pointedly at him.
“I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve to be treated that way; and, thank you, Y/N, for not giving up on me or letting Jeonghan give up for that matter.”
“It’s alright,” you answered, giving him a sad smile.
Seungcheol spoke up next, “If we’re apologizing then I should apologize to you, Ji. I should have done what you said and gone to the food pantry instead of stealing. We wouldn’t be in this mess right now if I hadn’t--” Jihoon nodded at his words but looked down at his hands.
“It’s alright. I understand why you were doing it.”
The clock’s ticking grew louder than the silence you were all creating. You couldn’t help but stare at the clock, watching the seconds tick by. Suddenly, you heard the sound of two bodies hitting the floor with a loud thud. The three of you on the bed shot up to look around only to see Joshua and Seungcheol on the floor, unconscious.
“Shit. Shit. Shit.” Woozi said frantically, running a hand through his hair before running to them.
“Put them on the bed,” You gulped. “Put them on the bed and hope that they’re switching back.”
“Joshua,” he heard your familiar voice call out to him, but he didn’t want to open his eyes. He was afraid that when he did, he would find he was still Seungcheol.
“Joshua.” He heard from you again.
“Joshua, please open your eyes,” you pleaded, looking at Joshua’s body. Besides you, Jihoon was asking Seungcheol to do the same. What could either of you do besides hope that you were both talking to the person you hoped.
But, it seemed both of them were too nervous to open their eyes; and, the longer they took to open their eyes, when you knew they were already coming to, made the dread inside of all of you grow.
“Joshua, please,” you tried again, swallowing as you sat down next to him, making the bed dip. You placed a hand against his cheek and stroked him softly with a thumb.
Joshua bit his lips. He had to do it. He knew there was no avoiding it. But a spark of coldness ran down his arms and taunted him.
“On the count of three,” he said, “one.”
“Two,” Seungcheol followed.
“Three,” they both said and opened their eyes.
A shudder ran down Joshua’s spine, not one of fear nor one of dread but one of hope and pleasure. You were leaning over him, staring into his brown eyes. Worriedly, he could tell, as your eyebrows were creased.
He swallowed, “Am I...me?”
“Joshua?” You asked, chewing your lips. The hand on his cheek stilled.
“Yeah…” He trailed off, a grin starting to grow on his face. You nodded ecstatically, grinning along with him.
“I’m back! I’m back! I’m back!” He cheered as he sat up. “I’m me again!” He yelled and enveloped you in a hug.
“Oh, right,” he smiled, the corners of his eyes curling upwards in a way you hadn’t seen since you were teenagers, “I’m back.”
“What?” You asked, chuckling a bit. His words made no sense to you. It was like he was speaking out loud when he only meant to do it privately in his thoughts.
“I’m back,” he whispered.
“You’re back,” you repeated. You stared at him quietly for a moment, worried that he would go back to his old ways.
Joshua stared into your eyes, understanding completely what was going through your brain.
“I’m back,” he repeated again, hands making their way up to your cheeks where he cupped them.
“Happy birthday, Joshua.” A single breathless laugh and teary eyes from you.
He leaned in and kissed you like he had kissed no other. _______________________________________________________________________

Woozi’s wings flapped languidly as he laid on the soft accumulations of water droplets that formed a single cloud. To the newly anointed, it would seem that his attention was on the living humans that roamed the land that was Earth.
In the palm of his right hand, he rested his chin, and the other hand picked aimlessly at the cumulus like he was picking apart cotton candy.
Those who had known him for ages knew that he wasn’t really paying attention to the humans. Nor was he working—which in reality, is what he should have been doing, two of his other friends had already been banished to work on land as scout angels. But his closest friend Hoshi who worked in the same department as him, always let him get away with it.
In reality, Woozi was daydreaming—not that he’d ever admit it, nor would anyone believe it. He dreamed of what his life may have been like if he had managed to stay alive. If he had managed to stay away from his love for a single day.
If only he had met you some other day.
Perhaps then he’d be able to see you again.
Perhaps then he’d be able to hold your hand one more time.
Perhaps then he’d be able to you in the eyes again, without feeling his heart come alive only to be shattered into a million pieces when he remembered what you both were.
“Ji,” Hoshi screamed as he ran towards him, sword sheathed on his hip, “we have to go now! A fight broke out in Joshua’s sector.”
Woozi turned to look at him with a bored look in his eyes, “Can’t they deal with that themselves?”
“Not this time buddy,” Hoshi said, grimacing, “they’re out of Joshua’s sector but it seems Jeonghan chased after them. Now they’ve called reinforcements.”
Woozi turned away from Hoshi and let his head fall into the cloud and groaned. He didn’t really care if Hoshi could hear him, or that he possibly looked like an angel that was unwilling to do his job. He wasn’t unwilling. He was just dreading it.
“Alright,” He sighed as he stood up, and dusted himself off.
“Where’s your sword?” Hoshi asked they flapped their wings, lifting themselves off the cloud.
Woozi looked down at his waist, and at spotting it swordless, he waved a hand at it and materialized it out of thin air. He avoided looking at it, but nonetheless, nodded at Hoshi. “There.”

“Jihoon!” You screamed as you ran down the hall of his dorm’s building. Most of the doors on his hall were closed, but the few that were open had other students, other guys, poking their heads out of their door to see who was making a commotion. When their eyes fell on you, some of them snorted and went back to work, others rolled their eyes and put headphones on.
You knew they wouldn’t close their doors. The days were too hot. It was mid-September, but the heat had yet to go away.
“Sorry.” You said, slowing down so as you passed the open doors you could apologize. It was nothing new, you always came over—but you swore to Jihoon, that they probably hated you by now.
Jihoon had yet to come out of his own dorm room as you approached it. He was probably busy composing some new song or maybe doing his GE homework. He was always doing something—it made you smile. For as long as you knew him, he was someone who liked to be lazy but couldn’t help but do something.
A month ago, he had given you the key to his room so that you could let yourself in. He said it was because you had always found your way to his room since the day you met him.
You giggled as you took the key out of your bag and put it in the lock. He was right. But it didn’t look like he minded much.
As you opened the door you to his room, your eyes widened as you saw his head lying against the desk. Light snores filled the messy room you knew like the back of your hand. You smiled to yourself as you closed kicked some clothes on the ground around to be able to close the door properly.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
You stopped then, to take in the room properly. It had seemed like clothes strewn around were the only problem, but there were also empty food containers thrown around and stains on the carpet that, really, you didn’t want to know what they were. The sweltering heat only made it worse. The room felt like a sauna and with only one window that was blocked by an overgrown tree outside, opening it wasn’t an option.
Then there was the smell coming from the rotting food.
You grimaced.
Then, you stepped closer to him, peering over his shoulder to catch a glimpse of what he fell asleep working on.
Calculus.
You swallowed the laugh that was fighting to escape from you. If you knew him well, then it would be a couple of hours before he woke up himself—if he even woke up at all.
You glanced at the clock to his left, sitting at the edge of his desk. 6:30pm.
You smiled to yourself. It was time to go shopping.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
It was almost 8pm when you made it back to Jihoon’s building, dragging a large box across the hallways with other paper bags sitting on top of it. Your wallet inside your bag was considerably lighter and your bank account had a slight change in numbers. But even as you struggled to get the stuff down the hallway, you didn’t regret it.
Almost all the doors on his floor were already closed, save for a few that had only partly closed their doors. Even then, you knew Jihoon would not be awake. When you reached his door, you unlocked it yet again and brought everything inside. You pushed some clothes off of his bed and laid it all out there.
Then, you got to work.
Silently, you brought out a box of trash bags you had bought, took out a bag, and started to throw away all the empty food containers you could find. you wanted to gag at the amount of food you found that was starting to turn a green color or was growing hair.
When you were done, you left to go throw away trash at the end of the hall. Then, when you came back, you walked up to Jihoon and draped yourself across him and squeezed him awake.
“Jihoon.” You said, dragging out his name softly.
He whined.
“Jihoon--” You said again, this time wrapping your arms around his torso and pulling him to sit upright, “You have to help me clean.”
“Why would I want to clean,” he said, groaning as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. “Why are you cleaning?”
“Because,” you started, “it’s hot and the smell is driving me insane. How am I supposed to hang out with you if there’s no space for me?”
Jihoon looked at you passively for a few seconds before a small smile bloomed on his face. “Alright, alright.”
“Besides,” You started again, “I’ll help you with your calculus homework when we’re done.”
Without another word, Jihoon stood up and made his way to his closet where he pulled out a new, unused hamper. He opened it and set it on the ground. Then, he started to pick at his clothes and alternate between dumping it in the hamper or throwing it in his closet.
“Stop. Stop.” You said, giggling. “Just tell me which are the clean clothes, and I’ll put them away. You can do the dirty ones.”
“Sorry,” Jihoon said to you with a small smile, “I just really don’t want to clean.”
“I know,” You grinned, “there’s a reason your room is this dirty in the first place.”
For half an hour, you both cleaned, throwing clothes around the room and to each other so it could by quicker, at least on his end. When he finished putting way all the dirty clothes he had, he sat down on the floor and watched you work quietly.
It didn’t take you long to notice that he was staring at you. His gaze was something you had never been able to ignore, no matter how hard you tried.
“Why don’t you wipe the floor while I finish here?” You asked, “I bought some cleaning supplies too, you know. They’re on your bed.”
He snorted but stood up anyways, “Only you would make us work when we hang o—what is this?” He looked at the box resting on his bed, startled.
“A portable air conditioner. What does it look like?” You said, avoiding his eyes.
“I know what it is. What is it doing here?”
“I bought it for you.”
“You what?” Jihoon asked, his voice suddenly growing hard.
You finished folding the pair of pants you had in your hands and hurried over to his side.
“Please don’t be mad.” You said, wrapping your arms around his torso and hiding your face in his chest. “Take it as a personal investment.”
“Y/N,” Jihoon sighed, “That thing costs too much money.”
“I know,” You said, letting your voice take on a pouty whine, “but your room is too hot, and I want to stay over.”
“We can open the window.” Jihoon huffed, putting your hands on your shoulders and pushing you away so he could look you in the eyes.
You shook your head and toyed with the hem of his loose, sleeveless, muscle tee, “You can’t, there’s a tree in the way.” Then, looking up through your eyelashes, you tried to plead with him, “Please don’t make me return it.”
You tried to hold back a grin when he started to avoid meeting your eyes. There was a small frown on his face when he told you he was going to pay you back, but you insisting that you weren’t going to accept his money made his frown disappear as he started to insist that he was going to shove the money into your bag and you wouldn’t even realize it.
A few hours later, as the date began to change and the room grew beyond refreshingly cool, you shivered as you brought your knees up to your face, eyes growing wide at the growing intensity of the horror movie you were both watching.
“Are you cold?” Jihoon asked, leaning down to whisper in your ear.
You glanced at him to find his face centimeters away from yours, eyes looking straight into your soul. A blush ran up your cheeks as you let out a breathless laugh, “Just a little.”
Jihoon hummed, looking around his room for a blanket, “We put away the blankets because it was too hot.”
“It’s fine, Ji,” you smiled at him, “We can just turn down the air conditioning a bit.”
Nodding, he reached over your lap to grab the small remote that came with the unit and lowered the setting.
An hour later, after the movie had ended, you were listening to the gentle whirring of the unit releasing cold air to go to sleep. Besides you, Jihoon was resting on his back, arms crossed under his head like a pillow.
The air was starting to get stuffy and hot but not so much that you couldn’t handle it, at least so you thought. When the air itself was starting to keep you from falling asleep, you twisted around so you could look at Jihoon.
He had his eyes closed and his breathing was even, so you assumed he was asleep. A wave of relief washed over you and you lifted an arm to string over him.
“Y/N,” Jihoon groaned quietly, “I’m sweaty.”
You snorted, “I don’t mind.”
“Y/N,” he whined this time, “I’m gross.”
“I don’t mind,” you whispered to him, smiling as you clung to him tighter, “Besides, sweat is good for your skin. It’s healthy.”
“But the stickyne—“
“So what?” You asked. When he didn’t answer, you assumed he had relented and fallen asleep. But, as you snuggled closer to his side, sleep starting to fall over you, you heard Jihoon mumble “I don’t want you to be so okay with a sweaty me. That’s like putting me in the friendzone, I want you to like me, Y/N. I like you. Why do you think I took calculus when I don’t even need it.”
A giddy smile bloomed over your face at his confession. You had feelings for him too, hidden away because you thought he only saw you as an overbearing friend. But now...now you wondered how many times you had slept over and had unknowingly tortured him by sleeping next to him. How many times had you two cuddled while he liked you? Had you tortured him?
“I like you too, Jihoon,” you whispered back to him and before he could shoot up, panicked over the realization that you had heard him, you pushed yourself up and planted a long kiss on his lips that he responded to after a few seconds of shock.
When you pulled away, you grabbed the remote you had placed on the ground and made the setting on the air conditioner cooler.
“Guess you’re going to have to cuddle with me to keep me warm.” You flirted with him, biting your lips as you looked down at him.
There was a light blush that you couldn’t see on his face as he responded. “Gladly.” He smirked and pulled you down on top of him.

Hoshi glanced worriedly at Woozi from the corner of his eyes as they flew over a tuft of clouds. He had a stoic expression on his face, even as they suddenly met with gusts of cold air that slapped their faces.
Woozi’s wings flapped in time with his own wings, but at times they would flap harder than his own, like he was trying to push away something that wasn’t there.
“Ji,” he said, hesitantly, “you doing fine over there?”
It took him one too many seconds then he would have liked for Woozi to respond.
He blinked back into existence before answering, “Yeah. I’m good.”
“Maybe you should fly back? I’m sure I could call in some newer reinforcements instead?” Hoshi laughed, slowly, hoping that he wasn’t offending his friend.
“No, it’s cool.”
“A-Are you sure? It’s okay if you don’t want to go. Nobody would blame you…”
“I’m fine,” Woozi answered, rolling his eyes at Hoshi, “Let’s just fly faster or the fight will end before we even get there.”
“Okay,” Hoshi said, flapping his wings harder as Woozi did so too. He could already see Woozi putting his hand over his sword, ready to unsheathe it.
Hoshi gulped. He hated having to go to these fights—they never felt right, especially with Woozi by their side. But it was their job and he knew that even if Woozi always got hurt during these wars, Jihoon would never say no to going.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
“Jihoon!” You yelled, waving your hands in the air to beckon him. You grinned as a gust of cold wind brushed past you and into the dark tunnel behind you.
Jihoon blushed when he saw you waving excitedly at him. After weeks of planning and not being able to pull through with any of your plans, you were finally going on your first date. The semester was nearly over, so you didn’t have much homework to work on since finals were going to come soon.
In the end, he had grown so frustrated being unable to take you out, that you had told him to let you plan the first date. Then, you hadn’t told him what it was, claiming that it was a surprise.
Now, there you stood, in front of a dark and most likely slimy tunnel that probably had rats crawling inside; and, with the sun going down and the wind picking up, he was all but ready to convince you to have a small, home date.
“A tunnel?” He asked when he reached your side.
“A sewer tunnel,” you smiled, nodding like that was somehow better. You noticed the disbelief on his face and grinned, “Just trust me alright?”
He pursed his lips but nodded anyway. When you offered him your hand, he smiled shyly and tugged you into the tunnel, almost tripping over a single brick.
“Careful,” you laughed, “there are traps, everywhere.”
“Traps?” He asked as you pulled out a flashlight.
“Traps.” You confirmed.
When he saw you were smiling mischievously, he grew wary of where you were taking him. This all hadn’t been a trap, right? This was a date, right? You weren’t trying to humiliate him and leave him for dead here?
“I heard that,” you scoffed, nudging his shoulders with your own.
“Sorry,” he said, rubbing his neck with his free hand, “I’m just really nervous.”
“I can tell,” you said, bringing up your hands, “this is the first time we’ve held hands after all.”
Jihoon laughed as you both walked onwards, reminiscing about the troubles you had both gotten into after you had met. When the floor started to feel steeper and slippery, you stopped him.
“Alright, we’re almost there. But we have to be careful now there are stairs here.”
“Where are we going?” He asked, pulling you back before you could keep walking, “This seems too dangerous…”
You sighed but pointed down the tunnel before bringing the light to illuminate the both of you, “In another five minutes, we will have reached the ever elusive, ever secret, underground music association.”
“What?” He asked, slack jawed.
“I managed to score us an invitation anda session in the archive lab.”
You smiled widely at him, waiting for him to say something. His expression was stoic, empty as he looked you without saying a word. But still, you didn’t let his silence get to you. In fact, in the darkness and silence of the tunnels, only reinforced your assumption that he was excited and at a loss of words because of it.
You were sure you could even hear his heat beating harder and faster.
And just as you were about to ask him to keep walking so you could get there soon. Jihoon dropped your hand and reached up to cup your face. There was no time for you to react as he smashed his lips onto yours and kissed you with a force you hadn’t felt from his before.
Despite the coolness of the room, you even felt like the room was growing hotter. You didn’t know how long that kiss had ended but by the time he had pulled away, you could have sworn you were seeing stars.
“That was our second kiss…” you whispered breathlessly as you started to come to.
Jihoon chuckled as he cupped your face again, running his thumbs over your cheeks before giving you an eskimo kiss, “Thank you.”
“No problem,” you blushed, “Shall we?”
“Of course.” He grinned and grabbed your hand again before pulling you down.
The staircase was long and fairly easy to descend despite the slimy texture under your shoes. Thankfully the space was gradually growing narrower and both of you could feel ridges in the walls.
Luck wasn’t on your side though.
It took a single step to throw you off your balance. You had placed your foot on the stone step carefully, planting it firmly. But the slime on the stone managed to overtake you. You yelped as you felt your yourself kick into the air.
Jihoon shot out to grab your hand before you could completely fall.
“Be care—”
Then it hit.
You heard a loud crack, like a ruler being split in half and a giant boom followed it. You could only think of the sound as a bomb going off.
Beneath you, the ground started to shake, and the steps start to crumble. Even Jihoon’s hold on you couldn’t stop either of you from being thrown off your feet.
You tumbled down the stairs, hitting your head against the stone walls and steps on the way. Eventually, you felt yourself fall on the ground, but the shaking didn’t stop.
The flashlight was gone.
You couldn’t see Jihoon.
You couldn’t move your hands; and, eventually, a funny smell made your eyes flutter shut.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
When Jihoon’s opened his eyes, he was met with total darkness and a funny smell lingering in the air. He ignored the headache he was getting and started to feel around for the flashlight he remembered you having.
“Y/N?” He coughed, “Y/N?”
He clutched the flashlight and turned it on as fast as he could when he found it. Dust floated in the air and when he pointed the flashlight upwards, he noticed a bust pipe leaking a fume. He fell into a heaving coughing fit then; and, as he struggled to breathe properly again, he aimed the flashlight elsewhere, looking for you, his heart racing in fear as he noticed the large rocks on the floor.
Then he found a pool of blood and you at the center.
That was the first time his heart broke.
“Y//N!” He screamed as he scrambled to get up.
Falling to his knees at your side, he pushed the large rock that had fallen on your leg off and pushed your hair out of your face. He cried as he tried to clean the blood off your face, off your mouth.
He listened for your breathing, but when he heard only the faintest of breaths, he screamed, “Somebody help! Please help!”
When a white light flashed in front of him and a man appeared in front of him, he failed to realize he was in the presence of a guardian angel. But he didn’t fail to plead for your life.
“Please help.” He said.
“I’m sorry but only one can live this time. There won’t be enough air for the both of you until they come to find you.”
“Then save, Y/N. Not me, please.” He pleaded.
The guardian angel nodded and flapped his wings as he reached out towards Jihoon and did as he was asked.
A minute later you awoke in a coughing fit, with an unbearable pain in your leg and a teenage couple standing in front of you.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
“We’re here,” Hoshi said as they hovered far above a field of wheat. Below them, Guardian Angels and Dark-Winged Angels fought sword to sword.
They observed the field for a moment, trying to figure out where the best place to help was. Jeonghan seemed to be doing fine by himself, barely a sheen of sweet on his face. But when they saw Joshua, not only was the sun baring down on him, so was a group of Dark-winged Angels, trying to pin him to the ground.
“There,” Woozi pointed with the tip of his sword. He didn’t wait for Hoshi to agree. The moment he laid eyes on the group of the Dark-Winged gaining an advantage on Joshua, he took off. But just as he was about to swoop in and help Joshua, another figure flew in front of him and struck him with the blunt end of their sword.
Before he was even able to regain his baring’s and fly up, he already knew who had flown in front of him.
“Hello again, Woozi.” You sneered as you flew up to him, your sword at the ready. “Haven’t I told you before to stay out of our territory?”
There wasn’t time for him to respond, the moment you had finished talking you had pivoted and aimed your sword at his wings.
He grunted as he fought with you, swords clashing and wings sending gusts of winds at each other.
With every clang that he heard, his heart broke a little more than the last time he had seen you.
Neither of you spoke as you fought. You found speaking useless and he found it distracted him from you— the you he knew, the you that he loved.
This wasn’t you.
Those eyes that always held so much warmth and love for him. Those eyes that had a mischievous glint in them but meant no harm.
Instead what he saw was anger in your eyes. A sharp glint that reminded him of your sword, ready to harm those that crossed you.
Ever since he had first seen you after becoming a Guardian Angel, he had rushed to your side unaware of the side you stood on. That was the first time you attacked him, and after he was the one you were always on a look out for.
The other Guardians told him it was bad luck that he had seen you, found out that you were on the other side. But to him, it wasn’t bad luck. He had found you.
He just wished you remembered him.
“I thought warrior Guardians were supposed to be good at fighting?” His jaw clenched.
He knew he could never really hurt you, it’s why Hoshi always hesitated to tell him about these battles. Still, his sword clashed against yours just as hard as it did with anyone else.
Around the both of you, the fights were startling to dwindle, Guardians starting to overtake the others. Neither of you realized it though, too busy focused on each other.
It wasn’t until you had managed to drive him against the earth’s ground, that either of you stopped for a moment.
You snarled at him as your sword dug into his neck, face inches from him that you were both brought out of your bubble.
“Jihoon!” Hoshi yelled as he took off toward him.
Like a gust of wind had hit you, you were thrown backwards, clutching your chest in pain. ‘Jihoon, Jihoon, Jihoon, Jihoon,’ echoed in your thoughts.
Jihoon clamped his eyes shut, trying his hardest not to yell at Hoshi-- he thought the gust had come from him.
Looking around, you noticed almost everyone was gone except for the Guardians. You threw him a final glare, hand still on your chest, above the heart, and then took off.
Still, on the ground, Jihoon tried not to scream as Joshua and Hoshi landed gently besides him and pulled him to his feet.
Being close to you was pain.
Being close to you was like breaking his heart over again and over again.
Oh, how much he wished hadn’t met you that day. How much he wished he could have kissed you more than twice, confessed sooner.
And as Joshua and Hoshi pulled him into the skies, he couldn’t help but wish he hadn’t seen that flash of recognition in your eyes as you were thrown backwards. It hurt too much to hope that you remembered him. It hurt too much to hope that you were back.
Blurb: They’re from different societies, meant to hate each other. But when you don’t know where the other’s from...there’s always the possibility of love. But when they find out, what are they meant to do?
A/N: So, this was meant for E’s last brithday, and now it’s this year and a few days late. Whoops. I hope everyone enjoys.
Your blinds were drawn shut although the sun had gone down hours before you had even gotten home. Inside your own home, all the doors were closed and locked, the same vied true for the windows. There were no lights on either. The house was pitch black.
To find you, the owner/resident of the house, one would have to travel deep into your house—underground, into a second basement that had been built underneath the original. There and only there would anyone be able to witness you committing a crime so utterly heinous that if anyone were to find out, you'd be ostracized by society and driven into the lands of Dust where the ‘dusty’ lived.
You were part of the Sparks, a socially acceptable citizen, living a comfortable life in a house without dust, on a street without a speck of dirt. To be thrown into the lands of Dust, to live with the Dusty in their tan trousers and dark vests and sweaters, to use their bare technology with all their gears and oil visible….
And yet deep in your cave, a flickering blue light shone from a thin, unpainted piece of wire and glass that made up a monocle. A long brown chain link connected it to you, wrapping itself around your ear; two small sound receivers were in your ears too, producing small sounds of static before going silent.
It was an old piece of technology that connected to the social nets. It was called the Monet. It belonged to the Dusty.
You smiled and reached out tentatively, excitement bubbling in your stomach. “Initiate connection.”
“Connection Established.” The Monet responded, words appearing on the hologram it was projecting on the wall you were facing.
You extended a hand and grinned when it responded to you. A grayish-white box popped out towards you like a three-dimensional object begging to be touched. It was the entrance to the net.
Your finger hovered over the hologram in a second of hesitation before you made a motion as if you were tapping it. It expanded into a list of suggestions— sites that the Dusty visited.
Connections (a dating site), the Cyc (for information searching), and a gaming module with a plethora of sites. Although the Dusty were known to only use old mechanics, it was all they could afford, the Monet was significantly older. You doubted anyone still used it.
Gaming, you decided that would be the first place you explored. You flicked your finger upwards, still hovering over the list, and scrolled through all the titles until you came upon one that piqued your curiosity. <<Missed Connections>>
You tapped on the title. The image changed into one of a loading screen, a small avatar dancing at the bottom of the hologram. Then the image flashed, and you were staring at a set-up screen.
>> Create a Connections account to experience the game fully.
<<Create the Connection>>
<<Maybe Later>>
You stared at the options for a moment, only blinking every few seconds like a fish out of water that was nearing its end. You couldn’t make a Connections account that would mean having to say who you were, what district of Sparks you were from. You couldn’t do that! That would mean lying and you were a socially acceptable citizen!
Wait.
You smiled embarrassed though no one was there to see you. One of your fingers made its way upward toward your left eye where the Monet rested and toyed with it.
You had already broken about five different laws…
What was one more?
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
1 Year Later
You were a graduating student in the most exclusive school Sparks had to offer. Under your belt, you could brag that you had taken more than half of your required courses as an electrical engineering student under honors. Even more, unlike most of your fellow classmates, you had an internship waiting for you to graduate.
There was only a month left before graduation and it seemed that they couldn’t wait any longer; You were to report to a zone in the Dust that was being rezoned and reconstructed to be part of the Sparks. It was a great ego boost, to say the least.
Unfortunately, you were completely and utterly lost. Even the map they had sent you seemed to be missing a few twists and turns.
To make matters worse, there were no fellow Sparks to be found anywhere. As far as your eyes could see there was only red-brown dirt, dust and--
“Are those tumbleweeds?” You exclaimed, eyes widening. “I thought those were extinct.”
“They were.” A smooth voice piped up behind you, causing you to jump and whip around, almost tripping over your own feet. A man, most likely only a couple of months or years older than you, stared at you. He was clad in Dusty construction worker regulated clothes: a dark tan jumper, gray shirt, old leather shoes, and a yellow hard hat. It seemed safety was mostly irrelevant to the Dusty.
“Until your kind of people decided they wanted to be “funny” and reengineered them. Something about their visual irony.” He gave you a tight, forced smile.
You stared at him, eyes wide and blinking rapidly. Your fingers twitched as you brought your files and binders up to your chest to hugged them tightly. He seemed to be done talking as he gave you a once over, rolled his eyes, and turned on his heels.
You gaped at him. Words seemed to fail you, you couldn’t think therefore none left the space that was your mouth. ‘That man probably stole them.’ You thought to yourself.
A sudden spark of anger ran down your body. You glared at him. Your mouth clamped shut and your lips formed a tight line.
“Who the hell do you think you are to talk to me like that?!” It was a rhetorical question. You didn’t really care. But there was hell to pay.
Nonetheless, it was the same to the man who chose to ignore you. He didn’t spare a single glance at you, choosing to stare straight ahead, head held up high confidently.
That only made you angrier.
When you had reached the edge of Spark territory and the concrete ground began turning into dirt and dust, you had taken extra care to watch your step. They were slower and calculated as you didn’t want your pristine, leather white boots to be coated and stained in a rusty red because you were carelessly kicking up dirt. The same could be said about the rest of your outfit but as you were crossing the city limits, the patrolling officers had handed you, and everyone else in line, a long transparent plastic overcoat.
Now? Now you felt like kindling was being fed to the fire in your stomach, making it grow big enough to reach your now red cheeks and shoes.
Underneath your feet clumps of dirt crunched. They alerted the man that you was still following him. So, he stopped, and without turning around he answered you.
“You know, around here Sparks like you don’t live to see another day.”
The disdain was clear in his voice. You froze. The way his voice seemed to be holding back from a growl spooked you. His words, sounding much like a threat to you, frightened you.
Content with your lack of a response, he smiled to himself and resumed his walking. In no time he was disappearing behind the body of a dune, leaving you to yourself.
When you came to, the sun’s shining light had scorched your entire body and heated your plastic coat. A single touch reminded you of where you were and where you were supposed to be. Blinking, you tried to activate the communicator that was embedded in your eye.
A funny sound, a plung, alerted you that there was no signal. Gulping, you decided to check the time instead. 08:59.
“Hey! Hey, wait!” You screamed running and climbing, struggling, up the dunes to catch up to the man. You were about to be late.
“Hey! Please! I need--,” you paused, swallowing your pride, “your help.” A sharp clang shocked you enough for you to drop onto your knees. Slowly—cautiously, you lifted your gaze and found yourself staring at a hoard of Dusty construction workers. Dumbfounded as you were, no words made their way up to your throat and out of your mouth.
A man approached you, dressed in pristine white clothes you worried he was one of your bosses. “Choi Seungcheol. Are you the e-technician we’ve been waiting for?”
You jumped to your feet, plastering a smile onto your face, and dusted off your clothes hurriedly. “Yes, sir.”
“You’re late.” He responded.
His face, devoid of emotion and unblinking, made you uncomfortable. Struggling not to fidget under his stare you nodded. “I- I know, sir. I apologize. I d-didn’t really know where I was going.”
Seungcheol did not reply, keeping you and the rest of the construction site in utter silence. A single exhale through his nose came after what seemed like an eternity but was really only five seconds at the most.
“Next time make sure to know where you’re going. Now follow me.” While he turned around to look at the site, you let your shoulders slump.
“Back to work!” He screamed, and you jumped, tensing all over again.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
“You’ll be meeting most of the technicians during lunch, but there are a couple of people that I’ll have to introduce to you personally later. For now,” Seungcheol said to you as he led you down a concrete path that had already been built, “you’ll need to look at the building plans and designs on your own and figure out where the e-tech will be embedded.”
You nodded frantically. In the moments that he talked, you took seconds to look around, trying to memorize the layout of the site. A couple of feet away and nearing, you could see a small, strikingly white building sitting on a floor of concrete.
“That is the technicians' office, built-in advance. Dr.Hong will be your mentor—” he stopped where the path connected to the block of concrete the building sat on, “he’s probably already inside,” and motioned for you to continue on your own.
It was on the first step you took onto the concrete the office sat on that you realized your white, leather boots were stained in red. That damn dirt.
The edge of the sidewalk had never been so inviting. You hit the edges of your shoes against them frantically as your teeth chewed on your bottom lip. It was painful to watch minuscule amounts of dust and dirt fall off your once white shoes.
“Mmhmm.” You froze as you heard a throat clear behind you.
You licked your lips. You needed options. Fight - turn around and face whoever had just caught you trying to salvage your defaced boots. Or flight - run anywhere else to hide from whoever was standing behind you.
Great.
Straightening up and slowly turning to face your audience, you forced a tense smile to turn into a timid one. “Hello.” You said to a tall, tan man in a white suit much like the ones the residents of Sparks wore. Small vein-like decorations running up the middle of his coat were the only indication that he wasn’t like any other citizen of Spark. They were the mark of the e-technicians.
It was a mark of pride. A mark of reached accomplishment.
The man’s round eyes, finally traveling farther than your stained boots, studied you from head to toe. After a couple of seconds, he finally stopped, and let his gaze rest on the cuffs of your own coat. Even under the dusty, plastic overcoat, your own decorations were visible. One individual vein, much like his own, the only difference being your were only at the cuffs and he had more than one line, blossomed from the tips of your coat and stopped at your elbow.
A single brow rose on the man’s oval face in question. He leaned forward, as to look you in the eyes, and stared at you.
You gulped. He was handsome, yes, but he was staring at you without uttering a single word. His brown eyes seemed to grow more intense with every second that ticked by (though that feeling could have also been your growing uncomfortableness).
Then he smiled. “Are you the new tech?”
For a second you were glad that his eyes were closed. But, his change in character was enough to make one of your eyes twitch.
You let out a small breath, “Yes, sir.”
He hummed, eyes sparkling in the sun. “I’m Doctor Joshua Hong. I'm assuming the project leader Choi Seungcheol has told you…” he trailed off.
“That you’ll be my mentor.” You finished off, eyes widening as you realized who he was.
“Good.” He nodded and turned around. “Follow me.”
Scurrying behind him, you realized the block the building sat on was virtually empty. Judging by the absence of sound, you were beginning to assume that there was also a protective barrier around it.
Doctor Hong came to a sudden stop, causing you to stumble into his back. To your surprise, even the force of you crashing into him didn’t cause him to stumble. It seemed like he was perfect. Like nothing could cause him to lose his composure.
He was a Spark.
“Leave your shoes and protective coat in the box next to the door.” His light and airy voice sent a shiver down your spine.
Without waiting for you to respond, he entered the building and disappeared behind the closing door.
You were still, staring at his retreating form. When his words and actions finally registered, you kicked off your shoes and took off the plastic protector. Then, after enveloping the shoes in the coat, you put them in the box and scurried inside to an airy lobby, where a pair of white slippers waited for you.
Inside there was cool air and soft white lighting, it almost made you feel like you hadn’t left Sparks. If it weren’t for the windows you may have been able to fool yourself into believing you were still there. But you weren’t, you were in Dusty territory. The rusty red hills outside made sure to let you know where you were.
It felt wrong.
“Quite a view isn’t it?” Doctor Hong spoke up behind you. “Barren, dead. The Dusty should be thankful we’re taking this land and making it useful.”
You hesitated to nod.
“They’ll be constructing the buildings one by one. We’ll each be distributed to one of them. For now though--” he waved a hand for you to follow him down the hallway, “we have the models of their design.”
You entered a small white room at the end of the hallway, empty save for a white chair and the Panet on the wall.
Doctor Hong smiled, “This’ll be your office. Have fun arranging the designation of the technology for your building.”
You were left alone in the room soon after, your mentor Dr. Hong giving you a single nod before leaving and closing the door behind him. Letting out the breath you had been holding, you let yourself slump into the chair.
The chair, one just like the rest of the office chairs in Sparks, had wheels attached to the legs. Things like this, wheeled chairs or gravitating tables (Sparks had to go retro sometimes too) made life in the Sparks all the more special.
You pushed yourself with your feet toward the Panet on the wall. You placed your left hand on the silver panel screen and grinned when a soft hum filled the room. A soft blue light fell from the roof and filled the room instantly, covering the floor and walls alike.
“I don’t feel like moving.” You sighed and lazily reached toward the images hovering over the wall. It took a total of four taps to get the model of the building you were responsible for projected into the middle of the room. “Let’s get to it, then.” You said, then immersed yourself in your work for the next five hours.
The sound of loud knocking interrupted your robot-like concentration. Sliding over to the Panet, you slapped your hand over it and rushed to the door. The image disappeared as you opened the door and both of your bosses, Mr. Choi, and Dr. Hong greeted you with fixed smiles.
“It’s break time.” Dr. Hong said.
“We’ll take you to the ‘canteen’ as the Dusty have dubbed it.” Mr. Choi finished off as if routine, eyes, and head tilt matching that of your mentor.
You smiled hesitantly, starting to realize that these smiles you were giving were probably going to be a constant in this work environment. You couldn’t help it though, apart or together, both Mr. Choi and Doctor Hong had a look in their eyes that seemed as sharp as knives.
With their dark brown eyes and pitch-black hair, even their softer and more delicate features couldn’t stop them from giving off an intimidating sensation. The tall and stiff way they walked didn’t work either.
“Alright.” You nodded and followed them.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
It was weird.
It was weird to see the composed white of the Sparks contrasted against the rustic browns, reds, golds, and blacks of the Dusty. To see them using items that only the Sparks were capable of having…
“Do not mind them.” Mr. Choi said in a steady voice, waving over a man and a woman in suits like Dr. Hong’s. “They keep to their own. Considering this is the only time they are allowed to eat the food typical to us and abide in an area meant only for us, they are quite curious beings.”
“Why are they allowed to be here?” You whispered. How you hoped no one could hear you.
“Pity, I assume.” Dr. Hong chimed in.
“No bother,” Mr. Choi began as he imputed his order on the meal panels, “let them have their curiosity. They aren’t going to be allowed here forever.”
The man and woman that he had waved overreached them after that comment. They gave him a small nod in greeting. “Ah, Mr. Jeon, Miss Lim. I’d like for you to meet the newest member of our team.” The man and woman, both of equal stature, both wearing the white outfits of a Spark, blinked and turned to look at you to give you a thin smile.
“Y/L/N, this is Lim Nayoung, second in command at the construction site after me.” He pointed at the woman.
“You may call me Miss Lim. “ She said, extending a hand to shake in courtesy.
You reciprocated, noting the hammer design imprint on top of her left shoe, the mark of the construction designers. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“This--” she motioned to the man whose sharp eyes and raven black hair added a certain aura of intimidation and disinterest around him, “is Jeon Wonwoo. He’s another technician.”
“His building’s already been constructed so we won’t be seeing him around the office as often for now.” Dr. Hong said.
In the blink of an eye, they all had their lunches, all but you. They stared at you passively, although if someone were to look closely at their eyes they would see a hint of amusement. You, however, were not paying close attention to their facial expressions. For the most part, you tried to avoid looking directly at them unless you felt you had to. Embarrassed as you were, you were having a hard time keeping the blood from rushing to your cheeks.
You rushed to order your food and tapped your foot impatiently until it arrived. When it did, you followed the others to a table and ate silently like the rest of them.
In your tomb-like state, your attention drifted from Dr. Hong’s turtle-like eating speed to the conversations that drifted from around them to them. ‘Look at this meat. It's--It’s so--”
“Y/L/N!” You jumped. Mr. Choi was staring at you, fork and knife at hand.
“Sorry, you were saying something.” You replied your voice almost nothing but a whisper.
Mr. Choi shot you a strange look. “There's one more person I need to introduce you to. It’s a bit unorthodox, but since you’ll have to set up the tech of an entire building on your own, you'll need someone with you.”
You shook your head, a bit at a loss for words, “I don't understand, sir.”
“This is Hoshi,” your eyebrows furrowed, you hadn't realized there was someone next to him. You turned and standing at the edge of the table was the same man who had disrespected you and left you to die in the empty expanse of the Dusty desert. Ravenous animals could have torn you limb by limb, piece by pie--
“Miss Y/L/N.” Mr. Choi snapped, annoyance in his voice.
“Sorry, sir.” You replied, grimacing.
All because of him.
“As I was saying, this is Hoshi. He's the leader of the construction workers.”
“We had to have Dusty leader for them. We didn't want any riots because Seungcheol was the only leader. A Sparks leader.” Miss. Lim whispered. Her intent may have been to quietly whisper their true intentions to you, but you were quite sure that he had heard her.
You nodded rigidly.
“He’ll be accompanying you to your building when it's done. Although, he will have to be around you every now and then before then.”
“As to make sure that your designs fit with that building material and designs.” Dr. Hong added in after, not missing a beat.
You turned to look at Hoshi, eyebrows begging to scrunch up in distaste. He was looking at you too, a bored expression overtaking his face. He looked away a second later and you had to fight the urge to send a colorful remark his way.
“Our apologies you’re stuck with a Dusty, but I’ll be going with Dr. Hong and Mr. Jeon will be with Mr. Choi so we ran out of options.” Miss. Lim said, nodding at her food.
You nodded, “It can’t be helped.”
“We’ll let you talk with your accompaniment, then. Lunch is over in ten minutes,” Dr. Hong said, after looking at the glowing black numbers displaying the time on the wall, “be back in your office by then. We do not tolerate tardiness here.”
“Yes, sir.” You said again and watched as the rest of the Spark team stood up to dispose of their trays and left together.
You sat in silence, Hoshi standing at the foot at the table staring at everything and everyone but you, and you picking at your food (chicken salad) with your fork. When you felt unable to keep silent, time-stretching on to feel like an eternity, you raised your fork to take a bite and chewed languidly, thinking about what you were about to say.
“When will you be able to stop by the offices?”
You had refused to look up at him while you talked to him but when you felt the table jolt, you were forced to look up at him. The palms of his hands were flat against the table, and his upper body bent as he leaned forward. Your eyes widened comically.
Hoshi, with sharp eyes and lips pressed into a thin line, stared at you boredly, his face only inches from yours. But, even from that distance, you could feel him breathing by the air leaving through his nose. In your startled state, you had forgotten how to move and sat frozen. It was almost as if you were in a trance.
“Let’s get one thing straight, boss.” He dragged out ‘boss’ as if it were an insult. “You might be part of the show up in those white offices, but I run the show down here.” He hit his palms against the table again, adding a smirk to his face this time around.
It was the same bravado he had used when you had asked him for directions. The sudden recollection of this snapped you out of your frozen state.
“I’ve already asked you this once but since it seems like you have no brains inside that thing you might not know is your head, I’ll ask again. Who the hell do you think you are to talk to me that way?”
His eyes narrowed into a glare but before he could get a word in you cut in again.
“What? Just because my superiors are gone suddenly you have the right to talk to me like that?”
This time, he was silent, waiting and thinking that you weren't done talking yet. As he came to realize that you were done talking, you came into a realization that he was waiting for you to say more.
Taking your shot you picked up your tray and slammed it against the table, standing up at the same time to give you greater momentum against him. “You are going to go to my office at the end of the day. Got it?” You growled, your words final.
None of them had noted that the area around them had gone silent. Hoshi, stunned, was unable to think of words to say to you and could only watch as you threw your food away and left without waiting for him to respond.
Snickers from someone in the vicinity woke him from his trace like a slap of cold water. He whipped around to glare at the person. The seconds ticked by and his face grew red.
With a huff, he turned on his heels and left; his hands were curled into fists.
He never figured out who was laughing at him.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
You sat slumped in your stiff, white office chair; your fingers twitching against the armrest. In front of you, the time was being projected via virtual numbers.
It was the end of the day.
Hoshi had yet to show up.
You swiped a hand across the image to pull up the main menu. A list with different minuscule timekeepers overtook the old image. ‘Clock,’ read the one that your eyes glued themselves too. your index finger hovered over it, itching to select it and have a giant circle with “hands”-- you remembered your school lessons, three-dimensional lines that moved with the measurement of time, moving in circles until it was time for you to leave.
But even in its minuscule preview, you could see one of the lines, a thin line, moving quicker than the rest around the circle. Before you knew it your screen blanked and a simple reminder appeared.
“The end of the workday has arrived. Save work now and enter sleep mode?”
You signed and nodded to yourself. With a single flick of your wrist, you saved your work and ordered the Panet into sleep mode.
A knock on the door came when you were sliding a Panet Protector, the shade of the white wall, over the Panet.
You glanced at the door, waiting for a second knock to beckon you. When it didn’t come, you shrugged and went back to your chair’s resting place to grab the white slippers you had been given to wear inside.
Then you were at the door, sliding on your slippers with one hand and running a hand over the door sensor to open the door with the other.
Then you stiffened. You fought to keep a neutral facade, though your eyes were straining themselves in your attempt to not glare.
“You’re late.” You said blandly.
Without a word, he stepped forward to walk into the room. Seeing this, you blocked the door with your small frame and walked forward yourself. Hoshi faltered and retreated, letting you brush past him and close the door in his face.
He raised an eyebrow in question. In return, you gave him a once over and scoffed. Then, pressing a small button on the wall on your way down the hallway, you scurried into the main lobby.
A sudden scream had you smirking as you grabbed your red dusted, no-longer-pristine white boots.
Dr. Hong cleared his throat, an inquisitive look on his face.
‘What?’ You gave Dr. Hong, who was standing at the entrance of the raining, self-cleaning hallway, an innocent look as you stepped outside and put on your ruined boots.
He had been tracking dirt in.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
To say you were upset would have been an understatement. To say you were angry would be an insult to everyone and everything that joined forces and crossed your path.
You were livid.
From your way home from work—where you had forgotten to put on your protective coat and had thereby been attacked by gusts of wind that rose the copper-red dirt and settled it on your white clothes, to you actually reaching Sparks territory, home, only to be stopped by the Dividend units. You had been asked to prove you were a citizen of the Sparks. It was ridiculous.
Even now you could feel your neighbors eyes on you, judging you for your shoes which were now coated all around in red dust and dirt, judging you for the protective coat you were wearing— yet another thing dusted in the Dusty’s infamous copper-red dirt.
Fumes were leaving through your ears as you placed a hand over your house’s door bioscanner. When a gentle click alerted you that the lock had been undone, you pushed your door open, stepped inside and slammed it closed.
With your back against the door, you let yourself slide down until you were sitting on the floor and a red trail had formed underneath you.
“For f—” You cut yourself off.
You wanted to sleep for an eternity, forget work and all that came with it. But instead, you pulled yourself up and got to work cleaning the rusty dirt off yourself and the floor.
It was eight at night when you finally finished. You sighed to yourself, tired but relieved that you could finally do what you itched to do every night.
After a quick walk through your entire house, making sure all windows and doors were locked, you ran down into your basement, through it and into your second basement where a single chair and a monocle waited for you.
To you, it was as if he was waiting for you.
You traversed through the illegal equipment in a hurry. Outwardly it would seem that you were feeling guilty for using it in the first place, but in reality, you were trapeasing through the room, rushing to put it on and turn it on. To see the flickering blue light of the Monet and the flickering images of your virtual life on the <<Missed Connections>> game was all you looked forward to every day.
Then, almost instantly after the loading screen disappeared, you could hear him greet you cheerfully with his smooth voice.
“Welcome home, Honey!” A small, breathy laugh, could be heard at the end of his line.
You bit the corner of your lower lip smiling, and a dark blush ran up your cheeks while you answered him. “Hello to you too, Mr. Sexy.”
You blushed harder than before. It was what he always insisted that you call him. A way to keep your fake relationship alive, he claimed. But to you, it seemed more like a way to feel loved. It was obvious that you didn’t know if he needed that, but you felt like he did, so you never rejected his flirting.
“How was your day at work?” His little avatar seemed to be serving food as he talked, so you commanded yours to sit at the small wooden table, center kitchen.
“Horrible.” You groaned, waiting for his avatar to sit down. “I went to my new job today but there was this...asshole who made everything harder for me.” You huffed and stomped angrily.
The sound of you stomping your foot on the cement floor of your house was loud enough for the man on the other side to be startled amidst whatever he was doing. A loud bang resounded on his side of the line.
“Star-man, what was that?” It had sounded something metal and large had fallen.
“Nothing, nothing.” He laughed. His little avatar, walking to give you a plate of food, paused and struck a pose.
You laughed at his supposed puckered lips. “Yeah, right.”
“A guy can hope.” You heard him mock sigh on the line.
“Anyways,” He said as he ordered his avatar to sit down across from you, plates already served and fake steam radiating off of them. “Tell me more about what happened? You brought food right?”
“You mean I can’t eat the food you made?” You gasped playfully.
“Ayyy.” You heard him scold you equally as playful as you.
“I’ll go get food.” You said. “Give me a minute, I’ll be right back.”
You stood up with a smile on your face, carefully taking off the monocle and sound receivers and placing them on the chair. You vibrated in happiness as you rushed upstairs, his answering laugh still echoing inside of you.
You stopped in front of your fridge and tapped on the door to see the list of your available foods. Most of the meals you could make would take too much time, the time you could be spending with Star-man. With quick taps on the screen, you called up leftover food to be heated. There was quick ding and when the small door on the fridge lifted, revealing a piece of steak and cold salad, you reached for it and ran back down the stairs, slamming the doors behind you.
The heat of the ceramic plate scorched your fingers. “Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.”
You scrambled to put it down, settling to place it on her chair while you sat on the floor next to it.
Immediately after you put on your gear, Star-man started firing questions at you. “Are you okay? I heard a noise? Are you hurt?!”
You chuckled, “I’m fine, I just burnt fingers is all.”
A sigh could be heard over the line, “You should be more careful.”
“I know I just…” you swallowed, you wanted to admit it to him, but to do so this way, over a virtual program was making you embarrassed, “I just didn’t didn’t want to waste any time I could be spending with you.”
There was a sharp intake of breath over the line, then silence. You waited in bated breath, looking at the only thing that kept you distracted— the image in front of you.
His avatar sat stilly before disappearing and reappearing in the same spot.
You were just about to apologize for making him uncomfortable when he suddenly spoke in a tone you weren’t used to coming from him. “I know we don’t each other they way people do; and, I know we haven’t met. But, I think I love you.”
You smiled. A blush started creeping up your face with the words that started forming within you.
But even as you said them, there was one problem looming over your heads. A problem both of you knew and were too afraid to change: the promise that neither could know where the other lived or your actual names.
Despite this, you couldn’t help but look forward to the end of each day. The end of each day where he was the ending and how much you wished he would be the start of your day too.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
A month later, as you were walking to the zone in the Dust, you caught yourself thinking about Star-man. What could he be doing at that hour? Where could he possibly live? Perhaps it was in one of the richer sections of the Sparks— maybe he was an engineer just like you, one that worked with technology. To be found using a Monet would be an especially hard blow on him then.
The sun glared down at you as you walked up and down the dunes of red dirt and dust as you tried to reach the zone.
Every day for the past month, you had been leaving even earlier than you had left on the first day, in hopes that you could make it to your office before the clock hits 8. At first, it had only been to avoid being scolded by Mr. Choi and Dr. Hong, but after another disastrous interaction between you and Hoshi, arriving early had become your way of avoiding him.
Now, unlike before, you walked with short even steps. You hoped that this way, your boots would remain white the entire day. This way you wouldn’t be stopped and scolded again by the Dividend units...again.
You ignored all the workers of the Dusty when you reached the top of the dune that hid the zone. After that, you practically ran all the way down and didn’t stop until you reached the block of concrete where the technicians' office sat.
You walked after that but didn’t take your time to take in your surroundings. You sped walked since there was no fixed time for Dr. Hong’s arrival, and you didn’t want him to think you were weird. When you reached the door and took off your shoes and clear coat protecting the rest of your ensemble, you let out a sigh of relief and rushed inside.
You met no one on your way to your office and when you were finally inside, you couldn’t help but fall into your chair after you slapped your hand on the Panet to wake it.
Your building’s map appeared at the center of the room in its blue, projection glory. Most of the rooms already had a red checkmark hovering over each door, a cruel reminder that you had already planned the tech arrangement for that room.
Before you could start designing the layout for the final room, a knock at your door interrupted you. You hesitated to open it, but when they knocked again you heard Dr. Hong’s voice on the other side asking you to open the door. You stood up quickly and opened it.
“Dr. Hong, what can I do for you?” You asked nervously, giving him a thin smile.
“I came to check up on you.” He hummed. “May I?” He motioned if he could step inside.
“Of course.” You answered, stepping aside.
Even before stepping inside, his eyes were already locked onto the projection at the center of the room. But, after he stepped inside, he made his intentions clear as he approached the map’s projection and bent over to study the rooms.
“I see that over 99% of your building is already covered in red check marks.” He said, shooting you a quick glance before turning back to the map.
“Yes, sir. I only have one more tricky room to analyze.”
He hummed for a second then responded, “Mr. Choi is currently in the building you’ve been placed in charge of. He would like for you to start the set-up today. Save the last room for later and begin turning these checkmarks green, shall we?”
“Of course, sir.” You replied.
Dr. Hong wasted no time after nodding to you, to leave. Walking behind him, you closed the door and took a second to compose yourself. There would be no more avoiding, Hoshi, King of the Dusty workers.
Oh, those check marks were cruel indeed.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
“Now tell me, Miss. Y/L/N, how do you plan to begin integrating the system.” Mr. Choi walked ahead of you and Hoshi, as you walked to the top floor of the building. After throwing a quick comment about the inconvenience of having to walk to the top rather than take the Levo upwards, he had pointed out the boxes full of the tech you were to install.
Now, as you walked all the way to the top, you carried two boxes in your hands. They were heavy and almost blocked your view completely, save for the bit that you could see if you tried to make yourself taller.
“I believe it would be wise to begin with the top of the room first and work my way downward. This way the room could have a cascading visual accentuated by the lights of the tech when it is on.”
“Very well.” Mr. Choi replied. You reached the top floor and the only room there, in a matter of seconds after this conversation.
Hoshi placed the ladder at the center of the room as you placed the boxes on the floor and waited besides Mr. Choi for instructions. You realized that around Mr. Choi and Dr. Hong, you had never really heard Hoshi say more than a few words-- none in this instance.
Without waiting to be told that you could begin, you began unpacking the boxes and separating the materials as you wanted them. After selecting a nano camera kit, you pulled the ladder towards the back right corner and got to work.
It didn’t take much work to assemble to nano camera. But, as you reached towards the ceiling to place it in the corner that it belonged in, you realized you had climbed the wrong side of the ladder.
You could almost hear Hoshi’s snickers as you thought about making your way down to climb the other side. A window large window had been placed against the same wall that you were facing, and when you felt a breeze of wind pass through it, yo thought it better to climb down.
It was easy to climb down, all you had to do was turn around. Then it wasn’t.
When a strong breeze came through the window and brushed past you, it shook the ladder. With no one holding onto the other side of the ladder, you struggled to keep your balance and before you knew it, you were falling backward into the window.
Above your own shout, you didn’t hear as Hoshi ran forward and stopped you from slipping completely out of the window. Half of you already hung out of the window when Hoshi reached you. He grabbed you by your legs, keeping you from dropping twenty feet into nothing.
“Help.” He struggled to get out. Mr. Choi rushed over and together they pulled you back in. Unbalanced by the change in axis, you stumbled into Hoshi’s arms. He, in response, promptly and casually knocked you onto the floor.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Mr. Choi asked furiously.
“My apologies, sir, it seems my team has not added the windows yet.”
Mr. Choi huffed, “Get it done. Until then, Miss Y/L/N, return to your office and finish whatever work you have left. Return here on Monday.”
You and Hoshi watched as Mr. Choi began to walk away, the anger radiating off of him giving you both the creeps. But before he left, he turned around and addressed Hoshi a last time, “Add another coat of cement to the walls after she’s done with the wiring on Monday.”
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
You sighed as you entered your house and closed the door behind yourself. You were tempted to slide down against the door but decided against it when you realized that it would leave a stain on the floor. A red stain.
There was no dusty red on you since you had met with the Dividen Units at the land divisions. They had been so smug about pointing out that you had an abundance of red dust and dirt on you because you had been spending time in the Dusty. They wouldn’t even listen to you when you tried to tell them that you worked for a Sparks company that had taken Dusty land for Sparks! They merely handed you a wet wipe and asked you to clean your boots before stepping foot in Spark territory.
Anything Dusty was abhorred by the Sparks.
You didn’t understand why the dust and the dirt from the Dusty were so abhorred. It was only dust. The sparks needed some dust-- everything was made white, everything was white.
Now that you've been near the Dusty, the people and the land, you couldn’t help but feel that your world needed a little bit of color. The cold blue color of the projections wasn’t satisfying enough. But the browns and reds of the Dusty called out to you.
As you ordered your food to be made on the refrigerator, you realized that the only colors that you could remember prior to working in Spark-Dusty territory was of what you ate...and on <<Missed Connections>>.
An involuntary shudder made its way down your spine as you made your way down your basements, knocking the doors closed with your hips. It would have been easier if you had them on automatic but something about that made you paranoid. What if someone was counting the number of times you disappeared into your basement….
No.
You shook off your rising paranoia as you snuck into your second basement. The Monet and monocle shone even in the darkness of the basement. They were practically inviting you to put them on. So, you rushed over to them and placed your food down so you could put them on.
Everything else was routine after that.
Food in lap? Check.
Monet on? Check.
Monocle and sound receivers? Check.
<<Missed Connections>>? Loading.
Star-man wasted no time to log on that day it seemed, as he was already there, waiting for you in the kitchen when you logged on.
“Darling, you’re home.” He said. You couldn't help but let out a giggle when his little avatar jumped up and down in joy.
“I’m home.” You sighed, “Meet me on the couch?”
“Sure thing, let me just bring our food.”
“How was work today?” You asked, as he (his avatar) approached the couch and set down your virtual food. He sat down next to you then and grabbed a plate to signal you the okay to start eating.
“Boring.” He said voice muffled a tiny bit, by food you imagined. “There are some newbies and they keep getting me in trouble with the higher-ups--”
You were strangely domestic with each other. It was something that you couldn’t help but notice every time you went online to spend time with him, even more when you were having a shitty day. Every time you looked at your tiny avatars eating together, smiling at each other, looking into each others virtual eyes... you wanted so badly to tell him where he could find you. Screw the promise.
“ZZ-Gears?”
“Yeah?” You answered, coming out of your daydream.
“You left our world didn’t you?”
“Sorry.” You said bashfully.
He laughed, “That’s all right. Tell me about your day now.”
You paused for a second, trying to think of what to say. “I feel like I want to quit my job.”
“What? Why?”
“I almost died today at work today.”
“What?!” He screamed.
“I’m alright, I promise. I just-- it feels like too much. I swear my partner hates me and I don’t even ask him to do much even though I’m supposed to.” Your final words came out in a whine you only somewhat hoped he didn’t pay much attention to.
There was silence between you two for a couple of seconds before he spoke again, “You know, you can always come online and send me a request to come online...then you could rant to me or tell me if something is going wrong. You don’t have to keep it to yourself...or wait so long to tell me.”
Gosh, how much he made you want to hug him. He made you want to know what it would be like to be held in his arms. What would it be like to have him care for you and make you melt in person? “It’s not like I can just take this out in broad daylight, can I?”
He laughed. “No, no you can’t. But we haven’t been doing that anyway, have we? You could always just find a really secluded place or a place like wherever you are now.”
“A basement then,” You chuckled and made your avatar latch itself to his.
“A basement.” He agreed. “Oh, I have to go now.” He made sounds of crying over the line, “I forgot I have a meeting to attend. But, I’ll talk to you tomorrow, darling.” His avatar cried then kissed her forehead.
In and out of <<Missed Connections>> you were sickeningly sweet. Would you be this way if you knew each other? You weren’t sure, but you sure hoped so.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
Monday mornings were unlike all other workdays on the worksite. They were bland and sluggish, and truth be told on Monday’s everyone acted like no one around them existed. It was as if they were all ghosts, sliding past each other and never coming into contact.
Everything was silent, save for the occasional sounds of equipment being used.
It’s possible that this could be the reason why no one noticed when you walked into your assigned building, carrying an old Dusty ladder in one hand and struggling to keep a box of tech in the other.
No one paid you any attention nor spared you a single glance. At that moment, it was as if you were the only ghost around, gliding past them in a breeze even though you were struggling. Or, it could have just been that they paid you no attention since you were from the Sparks.
Sparks and Dusty didn’t get along after all.
It took you longer than the first time you came, to travel the building and reach your destination. You stopped on the floor below the one you were in before the weekend and entered the first room on your right.
Your footsteps crunched as you walked on the tarp-covered room. The noise made you smile, a welcome distraction to the silence around you. You almost skipped all over the room, headed to the same corner as the level above.
You had nudged the ladder with your foot and before setting it up, decided it would be best to grab the box you had brought. Then, heading for the corner again, stepped around the ladder and screamed just like you had screamed three days ago-- you screamed for dear life.
With your sudden distraction, you failed to notice the tarp under your feet scrunching up, its center being the exact place you had placed the ladder on. So, as you lifted a foot to step over it, your world came crashing down.
You held onto the floor with one hand, struggling to hold on without anything concrete to hold. The existing floor, only a few support beams, was slippery and crumbling under your fingers.
“Help!” You screamed. A quick glance downward showed you there was no place to land except a couple of floors down where you saw both your ladder and your tech had smashed into pieces. It sent a shiver down your spine.
“Someone help!” You screamed again when you heard footsteps approaching rapidly. Trying to lift yourself up was out of the question, you had twisted your wrist on the way down. The bruising had almost been instant, though blood had not been drawn.
Hoshi burst through the door, squinting down at you to make sure he wasn’t seeing things. When he realized he really was seeing you hanging on for dear life, he grunted, grabbed your arms and hoisted you up.
“Aren’t you smart enough to realize when something isn’t done?” He screamed, anger clearly etched onto his face.
“I’m sorry!” You squeaked, holding your hands to your chest. “I didn’t mean for this to happen! I didn’t even see that there was a--”
“What in Sparks is going on here?!” Dr. Hong came rushing in, a meek construction worker of the Dusty trailing behind him. He bounded up to your side and looked over the edge of the floor. The broken tech equipment was easy to see even though the pieces were tiny.
“My apologies, sir. Miss. Y/L/N entered the building without alerting anyone so we were unable to warn her of the unfinished flooring.”
Dr. Hong took a glance at you, noticing the hand you were clutching to your chest. You tensed under his strong gaze.
“Miss. Y/L/N, please go wait in your office while I have a talk with Mr. Choi concerning your..accident.”
“Yes, sir.” You mumbled, before brushing past them.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
You paced back and forth in your office that was plunged in darkness. You were nervous. In the amount of time that you had been working at this site, you had managed to look and act like an abnormal employee.
You just knew that this meeting between your two superiors would probably be about firing you and finding a new replacement. Really, you could feel it.
You couldn’t blame them.
Dread was running through your veins, climbing up your every being and digging into you.
When a ‘whoosh’ could be heard traveling into the building from the front door, you stopped and listened. Footsteps, that even if you couldn’t really differentiate, you knew came from Dr. Hong and Mr. Choi, made you gulp and shove your hands into your pockets.
A thin but sturdy lump in your pocket startled you. In an instant, you were pulling out the Monet, the monocle and the earpieces by the long metal chain connecting them, and holding it up in the air.
Even under the white light of the room, the Monet sparkled and invited you to use it.
You froze suddenly when the footsteps reached your door. There was a low murmuring coming from their side and the longer it went on, the more you felt like you couldn’t breathe.
A simple door that could probably open at the hands of your superiors, separated you and an accusation of treason. Yet, despite being caught with a Monet in your hand, you couldn't find it in yourself to put it away. It’s not like you wanted to be caught. But, the fear of being caught froze you and it seemed like nothing could get you to move.
It wasn’t until they started to walk away and you heard another door close that you pocketed the Monet.
You wanted to call Star-man and tell him about your worries, the asshole that your partner was, the way you’d almost died again. But you couldn't, you were at work, a public place where you could get caught at any second.
Unless...
Against your better judgment, you snuck out of your office, rushed to put on your shoes and ran all the way to the new building. You thanked your luck when you noticed that there was no one around to question why you were running towards a building you had almost no reason to be in.
But even as you ran, you were building an excuse to be given at a moment’s notice.
You crept along the wall, poking your head over the bottom of the front window to make sure there was no one around. When you saw there wasn’t anyone, you ran to the front door and slipped through.
From there on, you rushed down the stairs and into the basement where you believed you could use the Monet without being caught.
You hesitated for a second, wondering if it was really a good idea to contact Star-man in a public place. But having already gone through the trouble of rushing down to the basement of a building under construction, you got ignored your doubts and took the Monet and monocle out of your pants pocket.
There was no light in the basement, but muscle memory helped you press the right buttons after you felt around the grooves. Soon enough you were online and sending him an alert, an invitation, telling him you were there.
Your avatar paced around the living room of your home, unprompted by you. Eventually, it sat down on the couch and a bubble appeared over its head, noting your idleness in the world.
Then, in an instant, Star-boy appeared on the screen and you all but ran towards him-- or at least, you made your avatar run.
“What’s going on? Are you okay? Wh--”
You sighed then giggled quietly, “I’m fine. I’m sorry. I just, I needed to hear your voice.”
“My voice?”He asked over the line, “Are you sure you’re alright?”
You sighed again, “It’s nothing bad, I promise. Work is just...stressful.”
“Tell me about it.” You heard him say. His little avatar waddled over to the couch and patted the spot beside him.
You groaned, “I’ve got an insufferable co-worker. I almost died again today and he had the gall to blame me for it! There was literally nothing stopping me from walking into that deathtrap.”
“Sounds like an asshole.”
You sighed, “Yeah. I think I might get fired too.”
“What? But that isn’t fair--” A loud, booming clanging interrupted their conversation. “Hold on, I have to go check on my workers.”
“Alright.” You answered. A second later his avatar disappeared from the screen and you were left waiting for him to return, your projection keeping you from standing in a room plunged in darkness, alone.
At the same, Hoshi was walking through the halls of his assigned building, asking his workers if you had come through the halls again.
“No? Then what the hell was that noise I heard all the way from my office?” No one answered.
In reality, one of the workers had let a large box of tools fall through the same hole that you had fallen through. It had hit the many protruding support beams on the way down, sending an echo reverberating throughout the building. But nobody was about to tell him that.
Hoshi huffed at the silence. But knowing very well that if it had been something important they would have wasted no time in telling him (or at least a scream would have given them away), he shook his head and started making his rounds making sure everything was as it should be.
From top to bottom, he strolled with his hands in his pockets, stroking the piece of technology he had hidden away in his pocket.
When he was about to head towards the front door, he noticed the basement door slightly ajar from the corner of his eyes. If he remembered correctly, he had told everyone to keep that door closed and not to venture there because the lights hadn’t been installed-- and he knew he remembered correctly.
With a frown on his face, he started to make his way over, checking over his shoulder every other second to find out who he needed to reprimand. But when no one appeared, he sighed and crossed through, leaving the door open enough for some light to help him walk down the stairs.
The closer he got to the bottom of the stairs, the slower he walked. Bright lights seeping through the room and growing brighter the closer he got made the hairs on the back of his neck stand.
Then, on the last step, he froze. The room was in full view and before him was something he honestly believed he would never see.
You were standing in front of a projection that manifested itself from a piece of equipment that was nearly nonexistent even for the Dusty. Hoshi had only seen that piece of equipment in old informational diagrams, save for the one he had in his own pocket at the moment-- a Monet, a monocle, and its earpieces.
His eyes traced over the figure of the chain connecting the monocle to the earpiece. Then his eyes flicked over to the projection itself. An all too familiar picture greeted his eyes.
Hoshi clutched the Monet in his hand, took it out, and let it hang out in the open from the chain.
“ZZ-Gears?” He gulped.
“Star-man? Is everything all right? I don’t see your avatar,” you answered, reaching out towards the projection to move the picture.
Behind you, Hoshi was quickly wrapping his head around the situation.
“Behind you.” He whispered.
You tensed and ever so slowly began to turn around. Your eyes locked onto Hoshi first, widening at the prospect of being caught by someone who clearly had something against you. Then, you felt the air being knocked out of you when a glinting object forced your eyes down where you noticed he was holding a Monet.
Then it clicked.
He had said your username.
He had the same voice as Star-man.
The Monet.
The noise.
You screamed.
Hoshi’s eyes widened as you started to scream. Before he could get a word in, you started running, brushing past him like the room was on fire.
“No, wait! Stop!” He screamed, turning on his heels and running to catch up to you. He reached out to grab you after pocketing the Monet.
A second before you reached the door, on the last step before the main ground, he pushed himself to reach out and pull you towards him by the wrist. You screamed louder this time.
“My wrist!” You cried.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! But, please don’t leave.” He loosened his hold on you but didn’t let go.
“Let go of me.” You cried.
“No, please. We need to talk about this!”
“What in Sparks is that screaming?!” Dr. Hong’s voice drifted down into the basement.
Your faces paled at his voice and when footsteps started to sound louder and louder. You grabbed the knob of the door and closed it, plunging yourselves into darkness.
“Be quiet,” Hoshi whispered. Though he couldn't see, you were rolling your eyes at his words.
“Who’s in there?” Dr. Hong asked. The door rattled as he pulled on it, trying to open it.
You gulped as Hoshi squeezed your hand and tried pulling you behind him. But, still wanting to get away from him, you ripped her hand out of his and stepped closer to the door. Before he could react, you opened and stepped through the door, closing it before Dr. Hong could look inside.
In a last-ditch effort, Hoshi rushed to get his hand out the door. So, even though the door looked closed, Hoshi had actually managed to stick a hand out and was slowly looking for your hand as you leaned on the door.
The pain he swallowed down.
“What in the world were you doing in there?” Dr. Hong asked sternly. “I thought I told you to go to your office.”
Hoshi found your hand and gave it a squeeze, not letting go after. You gulped and subconsciously squeezed his hand back, then made sure your hands were hidden behind your back.
“My apologies, sir. I was just trying to map the basement since I couldn’t find it on the map...in case I wasn’t fired.” You whispered the last.
Dr. Hong sighed, “You’re not fired. BUT--” he stopped to give you a pointed look, “I expect you to follow directions as you’re told.”
“Yes, sir.” You said, nodding.
“I’ll be making periodical check-ups to see how you’re doing. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir.” You nodded again.
“Alright, please head back to your office. I’ve already ordered for someone to take the broken tech and put it in your office. Fix it. I’m sure you know how.”
“Of course, Dr. Hong.” You nodded quickly.
You waited for Doctor Hong to start walking before you let go of Hoshi’s hand and followed after him. You didn’t spare him a look back.
A couple of hours later, while you worked on repairing the broken tech, a knock came at the door that prompted you to take a break. You were about to stand-up and open the door when you heard Hoshi’s voice from the other side.
“Y/N, please open up. We need to talk.”
You stayed silent and almost slumped down on your chair, no matter how many times he knocked and begged for you to open the door.
You were unaware if Dr. Hong was in his office or not, but you imagined that he wasn’t or Hoshi wouldn’t be knocking so much. You could only hope that he would eventually believe that you were out too.
You ignored the pang in your heart when he stopped knocking and walked away.
Minutes later, the Monet in your pocket felt too heavy. It distracted you even though you weren't using it or looking at it.
Another pang hit your heart when you took it out and held it in the palm of your hands. You stared at it for a while, running a thumb over it, caressing it like it needed comforting. Then, as if it could tell that you were paying attention to it, it started to glow a rich, golden color. It was Hoshi trying to contact you.
Another pang ran through your heart as you looked at it. It was relentless-- he was relentless. The color never faded. Really, you felt like the color was growing brighter and stronger. It wasn’t long until you closed your hand around it and shoved it back into your pocket.
You ignored it from then on.
When the end of the day came, you were sure that Hoshi would try to find you again. It didn’t take you long to decide to sneak out and avoid everyone on the way out. So, after putting away the newly fixed tech and turning off the lights, you ran out of your office as fast as you could.
You thanked your lucky stars when neither Dr. Hong nor Hoshi were around. You put on your boots the fastest you ever had and then, without a look back started jogging down the path you usually took home.
When you spotted Hoshi rushing down the same path, towards your office, you rushed into one of the buildings near you and waited for him to pass. Then you ran out and continued on your way quicker than you ever had before.
On the rest of the way home, you didn’t encounter anyone else and soon enough you were coming upon the Dividen units at the division line. You were startled then.
Their presence alone was nothing new to you. They were always there, making sure that no Dusty tried to come into Spark territory.
But, on this day, they weren’t allowing anyone to cross through the arch doorway and into the Sparks. There was a line at the doorway and against the wall. They were being given baskets and everyone was taking out whatever they held in their pockets, then giving it to the units for them to look over before being patted down.
You panicked. The Monet in your pocket felt hot and heavy. You didn’t want to get caught owning something illegal.
Luckily, there was a stone slab nearby you thought you could hide behind for a moment. There you thought of what you could do. You didn’t want to leave it behind, but you couldn't leave it in your pocket.
You dug the front of your shoe in the dirt...and then it hit you. Your shoes. You could hide the Monet and the receivers in your boots. They weren’t that big and your boot already looked big because of how you stuffed your pants in them.
You did so quickly and then stuffed your pants back into your boots like you always did. After, you walked out from behind the slab and joined the line. It felt awkward to walk with the Monet in your shoes. You could feel its edges and the bumps digging into your skin.
But, still, you acted like nothing was wrong. You merely stared ahead bored, looking like you were annoyed for being made to do this.
Eventually, you reached the front where one Dividen unit officer took your basket and the other started to pat you down.
You tried not to gulp or tense under their eyes and hands, especially when they reached your boot. But, it seemed that they hadn’t felt anything, or at the very least, they assumed that it was your pant leg if they felt anything.
After putting back your things into your pocket, you nodded at the officers and stepped through.
You were about to let out a sigh of relief when a single Dividen unit officer stepped up to you.
“Stop right there.” The woman hollered out, her voice stern.
“Yes, ma’am?” You answered after freezing for a second.
The woman glared at you, a frown on her face, “Dusty-related items are not allowed in the Sparks.”
“I-I’m sorry?” You sputtered.
The officer handed you a wet rag and motioned at your boots, “You are not to step foot on Spark territory with Dusty dirt-covered shoes.”
“Right,” you responded nervously and took the rag from the officer. The woman stood off to the side while you cleaned your shoes, watching.
When you were done you gave the officer the rag back. “I’m sorry officer, but would it be a bother to ask why the line? There’s never been this type of security before.”
The officer looked at you, momentarily confused. Then the look disappeared from her face and she stared at you blankly. “There are talks of Dusty revolutionaries and Spark traitors that have been discovered. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that would you?”
“No, ma’am.” You answered quickly, shaking your head just as quick too. The officer nodded and motioned for you to keep walking.
You let out a sigh of relief when you saw your home getting closer. Walking with the Monet was growing more and more uncomfortable. After every step you took, you felt like it was growing heavier, and the paranoia within you kept growing. You really didn’t want to get caught.
Once you were in your own home, the first thing you did was scramble down into your basement and taker your boots off. You shook the Monet and the other accessories out and quickly placed them on the chair where you usually sat using it.
It was dark for a minute before it started glowing again and you knew it was Hoshi. You knew it wasn’t the best idea to ignore him, but you also couldn’t bring yourself to answer.
You sighed for the last time that day, looking at it before deciding it was time to eat upstairs.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
The following day, Tuesday, you arrived at the site at the same time as you had all the other days. It was early and there weren’t that many workers around. So your walk to your office was calm and peaceful.
There were almost no people around the path that you usually took that you managed to forget about Hoshi for the entire time you were walking. It wasn’t until you reached your office that you remembered about the events of the previous day.
It had only been a minute after you walked into your office that Hoshi came striding in. Without knocking or letting you get a word in, he walked in and closed the door behind himself.
“We need to talk.” He said, striding up to you where you stood next to the Panet at the center of the room.
Slowly, he reached out to you, pulling you closer to him, giving you time to pull away.
“I’m sorry. I have no excuse for the way I’ve been treating you, I know. I’m sorry, I really am. You have to believe me.”
“Why should I?” You huffed, glaring at him. “You only regret everything because you know who I am now.”
“I’m sorry,” Hoshi said again, “I really am. But, you’re from the Sparks and there’s a certain way we all feel about people that come from there. It’s no real excuse, I know…” he trailed off, pulling you in for a hug. “But, I love you. I know I do.” He pulled away from you and with a hand, tilted your head up so you were looking into his eyes, “And I really don’t care that you’re from the Sparks.”
He was intoxicating. The way Hoshi was talking to you was unlike the way he talked to you before. He was pleading, you knew. But everything about him was softer, his voice, the look he was giving you as he talked. Even the way he was holding you was softer than the way he had held you before.
In those moments, both of you gravitated closer to each other, lips coming to a stop millimeters from each other. This was Star-man. This was the man that you had been dreaming of for months, wondering what he looked like, what he was really like, what it would be like to be in his arms…
There was a different intention here.
“There are things you don’t know from our worlds. They don't excuse me but perhaps they could convince you to give me a second chance. So please, let me tell you--”
“Tell her what?” Dr. Hong said from the doorway.
As quick as lightning, the two of you separated. You pushed Hoshi away.
“N-Nothing!” Hoshi stammered.
“If that be the case, then please leave. I would like to have a word with Miss. Y/L/N.”
“Yes, sir.” Hoshi nodded and started to leave. When Dr. Hong stepped past him, Hoshi stopped at the doorway and look back at you. When he saw you avoided his eyes, he frowned and walked away.
“Miss Y/L/N, how are the repairs coming along?”
“They’re coming along fine, Mr. Hong. A--”
“That’s great.” Dr. Hong clapped his hand, “As per Mr. Choi’s instructions, we’d like for you to finish repair today and resume installment tomorrow.”
You nodded, biting your tongue so that you wouldn’t tell him that you were already done with the repairs. You needed another day away from...him.
You managed to avoid him for the rest of the day.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
The following day, you set off to your building with Dr. Hong by your side. Hoshi was waiting for you both at the front of the building and when you arrived, he hung back, following you guys a couple of steps behind.
Dr. Hong seemed to know exactly which room he wanted you to start with and without a word, motioned for you to get to work. He watched you, you and Hoshi, work together for an hour, silently and without instruction before leaving.
It hadn’t been more than a minute after he left that Hoshi came closer to you. He hadn’t been holding the ladder while Dr. Hong was there, but now he was. He stood on the other side, holding it so you wouldn’t fall and when you looked down to grab something else, he was already looking at you, holding out the item.
You nodded at him as thanks but ignored him the rest of the time.
He didn't try to start a conversation though. It looked like he had given up.
On the day that followed, the same thing happened though this time you actually almost fell off. With one wrong step, you were about to fall off when Hoshi stuck his arms out and pulled you back onto the ladder.
His face, centimeters from yours, turned a rosy color as he tried to figure out what to say to you. You looked at him for a while too, your mind going blank. But nothing came out in the end and before he could figure out his words, you pulled away and went back to work.
The same happened each day for a week. When you were about to fall or mess up in any which way, as long as you were alone, he ran and reach forward, just to make sure he could be there before you fell. Sometimes, you would even reach your office at the start of the day and find food waiting for you. That happened twice a day, morning and during your lunch break, when you started to avoid the cafeteria.
It was at the end of that long week, on Wednesday, when you had been given an office day-- a break if you will, that you decided that you needed to tell Hoshi to stop. It didn’t matter that your heart hurt just thinking about it, you decided that you needed to do it.
You had sent him a message via Panet to his office asking him to come to your office. Fear coursed through your veins the entire time. You made herself seem busy to distract yourself from him.
When he reached your office, he came bounding in with a smile on his face. It was hope. You could tell.
“We need to talk.” You said, copying what he used to say to you.
Hoshi was about to answer when Dr. Hong came rushing in, a panicked look on his face.
“Good, you’re both here.” He said quickly. “Both of you go tell the workers to go home. Everyone has to go home right now.” He said, stressing the final word.
“W-What’s going on?” Hoshi answered.
Dr. Hong gave him a pointed look, “You need to go. Sparks has ordered a mandatory inspection of our facilities.”
“What?” You asked, confused at the panic starting to show on their faces.
“Che--” Dr. Hong seemed to cut himself off when his eyes landed on you as if he suddenly remembered that you were in the room too, “Mr. Choi said that there’s no time. Everyone has to go right now.”
“What about you guys?” Hoshi asked. You watched on confused, it was obvious there was something that they weren’t telling you.
“We have something to take care of, but we’ll try to leave as soon as possible.” He paused for a second, glanced at you, and then turned back to Hoshi, “They have all the keys. Go tell your workers they need to leave. Mr. Choi has already gone to tell Miss. Lim and Mr. Jeon, so go.” He ordered.
“Yes, sir.” You answered, grabbing Hoshi by the arm and dragging him out with you.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
It was true that you were young, but age had nothing to do with experiences. You were thankful though, that one of the things you had never experienced was war.
You remembered seeing images and clips of one when you were at the basic education school when you were a child. You remembered the glint in your teachers' eyes when they taught it, even the far-away look that they would sometimes dissolve into.
You used to wonder why. What horrors had they faced? What made them look like that? You regretted it now, as you looked out your window and saw how the streets had been plunged into darkness.
Other people like you had lifted the covers of their windows and were looking outside with the same fear and confusion as in you. White hovercrafts hoovered in the air like they had never seen before. Bright, white spotlights shone down from the front of them and into the communities around them.
They were everywhere.
You could tell they were since all of Sparks had been plunged into darkness. So, even from a distance, you could tell that the hovercrafts were there too, shining lights into the richer communities.
You shuddered. Something just didn’t seem right. Something was wrong, something was happening. That much was obvious.
Without waiting for something else to happen, you pressed the button next to your window so that they would be covered with the standard sheet of protective metal. If you couldn’t see out, no one could see in.
Still, it felt like something sinister was about to happen and even though you had gotten home hours ago when the sun was still up, the feeling had yet to go away.
Wanting to get as far away as you could from whatever was going on outside, you made your way deep under the basement and into the second one. The chair and the Monet were the only things there, illuminated only slightly by the light of the first basement.
You wanted to touch it, turn it on, go on the nets. Something within you was even trying to convince you to go into <<Missed Connections>> but you didn’t really know if you should. Going there would probably mean running into Hoshi if he was waiting for you.
What were the chances that he had yet to give up?
You shook your head. It was for the best if you forgot about Hoshi.
The doorbell rang above and pulled you out of your thoughts about Hoshi. Though you’d never admit it to yourself, you thought about him a lot.
You ran upstairs, skipping some steps to get to the door faster and then pressed the button on the door that activated the security holo-projection. It shot an image inside of the person outside and sent you into a frozen state.
You panicked when you processed what you were seeing. You opened the door in a flash and pulled the man inside.
“Ho--”
“Look, I know you don’t trust me but I need you to believe me right now. We need to go.” You gaped at Hoshi as he talked. His Dusty look, dark leather shoes, black pants that were coming apart at the knees, a yellowing shirt and leather suspenders….it stood apart in your white apartment.
“Hoshi?” You asked, still not comprehending that he was really there.
“We have to go.” He tried again, “The government thinks you’re a revolutionary-- a Spark traitor.” He grabbed your hands trying to pull you towards the door.
“What?” You asked incredulously, ripping your hands from him.
Hoshi sighed, “They know you’ve been using a Monet. They caught you on the site’s security cams.”
“They what?!” You screamed. “They’re going to kill me.”
“No, no. No, they’re not. I won’t let them.” Hoshi said as he stepped closer to you. “So please, please just come with me.”
You looked at him, studying his face and weighing the options inside your head.
“Please...just trust me.”
You took one more look at Hoshi and took off running down the basement.
“Y/N, wait! Please just trust me!” Hoshi screamed as he ran after you. He followed you a few steps behind, not apt enough with the layout of your home.
He stopped when you entered a dark room, another basement he guessed, and ran up to a lonesome chair. You held up the Monet for him to see before shoving it in your pocket.
“I just need to put on my boots before we go.” You said running past him again.
He followed you back upstairs to the front door.
“Alright, let’s go.” You said.
“Is there nothing you want to take?”
You paused to look around and then from the corner of your eyes looked at him, “Nothing here is worth that much to me.”
Hoshi nodded, “Alright.”
He wasted no time after you opened the door to grab your hand and pull you ahead. He seemed to have a flashlight on him that you hadn’t noticed before, and because he had slammed your house door shut after stepping out, you were plunged into the deep darkness.
At the edge of the street, hidden behind the shadows of a building that seemed to be under construction, Dr. Hong and Mr. Choi stood on top of two golden brown hoverboards with two bags slung over their shoulders.
“Dr. Hong? Mr. Choi?” You whispered, panicked.
“Don’t worry they’re with us.” He said as he pulled you towards them.
“I mean they’re the real revolutionaries, two other Spark traitors that they’re looking for.”
“Dr. Hong. Mr. C-Choi.” You stammered as you locked eyes.
“No need for formalities.” Mr. Choi rushed out as he handed Hoshi two other boards. “Seungcheol and Joshua.” He said pointing at himself and then Joshua.
“We’ve got to hurry,” Joshua said, turning on a small headlamp.
“Alright,” Hoshi said as he connected the two hoverboards, “these boards are from the Dusty so I doubt you know how to use them. I’m going to need you to--”
“Trust you?” You interrupted him, “Alright.”
He nodded at you, surprised. “Hold onto me, so you don’t fall off.” He said. He climbed onto one with ease, balancing the board as it seemed to wobble when he stepped on. Then he held out his hand to you. Without a second thought, you grabbed his outstretched hand and let him wrap his arms around you. You wrapped your arms around his torso too, ready to cling to him for dear life.
“Ready?” Hoshi asked her.
“Ready.”
You were off. Seungcheol took the lead, maneuvering through the empty streets until reached the utilities district.
“What are we doing here?” You asked.
“All of Sparks is under lockdown. The only way we’re going to get out of here is if we got through the sewage pipes.” Joshua answered.
“There are some things about Sparks that are still old school, Y/N,” Seungcheol said. “For example…” He trailed off as he stopped and got off his board. The others followed and so did you. “Manholes.”
The group scurried into the hole and once inside, Seungcheol moved the cover back over the hole and motioned for everyone to get back on their boards.
You rode for what seemed like hours trying not to gag at the smell, dirty water under your boards, mice and other critters scattering around. Joshua and Seungcheol tried explaining to you every other hour, the reason they were revolutionaries. They just didn’t believe in the divisions that were being built around each other. It seemed to you that they were trying to convince you to join their cause. Every now and then, they would also try to get you to tell them why you had been using a Monet. You didn’t tell them.
After a while, when your legs were starting to grow tired, you started to shift uncomfortably in Hoshi’s arms. It looked like he knew what you were feeling since he hugged you closer to himself and told you to close your eyes and relax, sleep if you could.
You did relax, but you couldn't sleep.
Eventually, when you opened your eyes and stared ahead, you saw a light at the end of the tunnel.
“How long?” You asked.
“Four hours.” Hoshi answered, “I’m sorry but we still have a few more to go.”
“Okay,” you whispered tiredly.
You tensed when saw a couple men standing at the end of the tunnel. “There are people.” You whispered to Hoshi.
“Our friends.” He said, giving you a squeeze.
“Took you guys long enough.” One of them huffed when they exited the tunnel onto flat, Dusty copper-red land. “And who’s this?” He asked when they came to a stop, eyeing you.
You squirmed under his stare.
“Shut up, Chan,” Hoshi said, moving to stand in front of you. “There’ll be time for introductions later. Did you bring the explosives or not?”
“I have them.” Another one stepped up, “Woozi couldn’t come so he sent me.”
“Good, set them up,” Seungcheol said, taking one of the bags the man was holding.
It didn’t take them long to cover the entrance of the tunnel with TNT, you noticed. The letters were painted on with black paint.
“Alright, let's go.” Seugncheol huffed. He waited until everyone was on their boards and riding away to light the fuses.
You had only ridden for a few minutes before you heard the explosion, and Seungcheol, without looking back, just told you all to ride faster.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
“Where are we?” You asked three hours later when you reached a large, decaying, Spanish Adobe Villa. It was only one floor but the arches made it seem grand and classic with its tan color.
“HQ,” Hoshi answered, helping you down. “Woozi’s house.” He smiled at you, knowing that those words meant nothing to you. While Hoshi took apart the boards he had connected, the rest of the group had already headed inside.
“Common.” He said, holding out a hand to you. “It’s time for introductions.”
When you walked inside, you entered the living room, where the group and even more people were waiting. Never had you seen so much leather and brown colors.
They fell silent when they saw you.
“Everyone,” Hoshi started, his voice booming. “I’d like for you to all meet, Y/N. I got her run out of Sparks so she’ll be staying with us from now on.”
Silence. Then a scoff from some other girl in the back.
She walked away and you tensed. “I’ll go check on her.” Another person said, running after her.
“I guess I’ll introduce you to them later.” He sighed and turned to a man who was leaning against a column.
“Y/N this is Woozi.”
“Hello.” You said, nodding at him. He nodded back at you, face blank. You bit your lips nervously as Hoshi turned you towards someone else.
“And this is Chan.” He pointed at the man you had met earlier, the one with a square face and an impish smile. He winked at you and laughed when you turned red.
“Seokmin,” he pointed out next, the tall, smiley one that brought the explosives, “but we call him DK. There are a few others but I think they’re away right now.”
You nodded at him, not sure of what to say. He smiled at you when you turned red again, then turned to the others.
“We’re gonna go to sleep now.” Then before they could answer, he took you away.
“<<Missed Connections>> girl?” Woozi asked.
Joshua nodded.
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
“I’ll sleep on the floor,” Hoshi said as he threw a blanket on the floor.
You nodded from his bed, toying with the hem of the shirt he had given you to change into. “Okay.”
Half an hour after he had turned off the light to the small room, under his covers, you couldn’t sleep. Everything felt too new and weird for you. The color of the walls, the way the bed felt.
It was a change in everything you had learned to live with. Even the air felt different.
“Hoshi?” You said into the darkness.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you. For coming to save me, I mean.”
There was a beat of silence before he answered, “I’ll never let them touch you.”
There was silence again between them. But, the longer it grew the harder it was for you to keep away from him.
“Hoshi?”
“Yeah?”
“Could you sleep...up here with me?”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” You answered and moved over when he stood up. He got under the covers, slowly, waiting for you to change your mind. When you didn’t, he pulled the blanket over you both and settled down. Then he heard your sniffles.
He reached out and pulled you into his chest, softly rubbing circles into your back. “It’s okay. You’re okay. You’ll be okay.”

- A Month Later -
“Soonyoung!” You screamed as you came walking into the garage where the others had told you he was.
“Yes?” He answered, sliding out from under a zeppelin he was working on. He wiped the sweat off his face as he came face to face with you.
“Do you need any help?” You smiled at him. When he didn’t answer, your smile disappeared. “Soonyoung?”
“Hmm?” He answered, coming to. “Sorry, I just can’t get used to you in those clothes.”
“Do I look bad?” You asked, looking down at your outfit.
Hoshi smirked as he ran his eyes over you again, taking in your knee-high, brown leather boots, the blank pants that you had on, the white long sleeve shirt that you had under a corset, and the pair of bronze welding goggles that you had atop your head.
“No, not at all.” He smirked as he sat up straighter.
You smiled and took a seat on his lap. You tried wiping the oil he had smudged on his face before speaking, “Is that so?” You giggled.
Hoshi licked his lips, smirking, before he answered, “Extremely.”
You smiled and quickly leaned in to peck his lips. There was no time for him to respond as you pulled away right after.
You laughed at his pout. When you looked down at the outfit he was wearing you started to toy with the suspenders. It was the same outfit he had been wearing when he rescued you.
“Thank you for saving me,” you started, running a hand down the suspenders, “And for giving me a home.”
“I’d save you all the times you needed, darling.” He said, pecking your forehead.
You smiled softly at him, and when you wrapped your hands around the back of his neck, you pulled him into a kiss. His own hands wrapped around your waist as they fought for dominance. You sighed into the kiss as he tugged at your lips with his teeth.
“Love birds, get back to work. You can do that later, preferably at night, when we’re all asleep and nowhere near you.” You broke away panting, faces flushed. Woozi rolled his eyes from the entrance and set down the box of materials he had brought and shoved it towards you guys, refusing to get any closer.
When he left, the both of you broke into a fit of giggles, and after grabbing the box of equipment, both of you went under the Zeppelin and got to work on repairs.
