(Major spoilers for Deathfire)
So I re-read Deathfire over the last week. I did this partially because it has my all time favourite Horus Heresy cover art (a fierce competition) but mostly because I just read Vulkan’s primarch book. I still love almost all of it from the meaningful interactions to Numeon’s internal doubt but one thing still gets to me, Numeon’s death. Don’t get me wrong there was build up and it was a powerful end to the book but it was just so…. Vague.
I shit thee not, until I read Old Earth I didn’t realize Numeon was dead. I legitimately thought he had just gone into the mountain to look for Vulkan and that he was somewhere behind Vulkan when he met the scouting party. I know I’m stupid and I thought that I’d realize something new the second time over but… no. It still feels weirdly unclear, maybe that was the intent. Whatever the case I still adore this book even if I’m not the biggest fan of its end and this doesn’t destroy it for me or anything.
Deathfire in a nutshell
Numeon: vulkan is dead so I’m going to try and breach the ruinstorm while he’s gone
Var’kir: why
Numeon: he’s pretty much 85% of my impulse control
I can't stop thinking about Thiel reporting to Guilliman after that bittersweet parting scene in DF.
Guilliman : You came alone, I see. Thiel : You know how stubborn the Salamanders are. Guilliman : They are. If even you couldn't convince him to stay, I guess this is the way it is. Thiel : *smiles* Guilliman : Guilliman : ...wait Guilliman : DID YOU EVEN TRY AEONID Thiel : You know how I prefer practicals, my lord ;)
So, my take is that it probably was like. Theoretical - extremely low probability of persuading Numeon. And practical? You spend the precious last minute sharing feelings with him and wishing him the best luck.
I'm so glad that Thiel was very practical one.
This is extracted from <Promethean Sun>, but hear me out and read it in the context of <Deathfire>.......
It was Numeon who brought him back again, loyal, steadfast Numeon.
I love it when characters are—or later proven to be—wrong in books. How it hits you differently and hard when you read the same sentence again after finishing the book once, knowing the whole truth and future.
One of my favorites from <Deathfire> is this :
Dead is dead, and nothing could alter that.
Oh no, Numeon. How wrong you were. You could alter that. You would alter that, yes, YOU would.

a Salamander Captain known for the starched formality that of the Ultramarines
an Ultramarine Sergeant known for taking all the liberty, which is exceptional for a son of Guilliman
