Once upon a time there were these colors,
These colors shone brighter than all others.
Painted in skies after a wrecking storm.
Restoring, once again, a feeling so warm.
Once upon a time there was a rainbow bright.
Bright in the darkness, shone like a light.
This rainbow smiled upon a broken land.
Her loving touch reaching mountain and sand.
My rainbow brought joy and laughter with smiles.
For her, this child, I’d walk all miles.
But then, came a terrible storm one day.
Thunder rolled, lightening struck and my rainbow turned gray.
All joy in this world disappeared from sight.
Darkness returned, my world with no light.
This trap I lived in was so very cold.
I’d be there forever, until I was old.
I shivered and shook in her faded colors.
My love, for her, above all others.
Suddenly warmth touched my skin.
A feeling with love, growing within.
This warmth had a glow that loomed over land,
My rainbow, invisibly, taking my hand!
She whispered love songs for me to hear.
My rainbow said “In darkness, have no fear!
My light shone short but bright for you.
Have no fear, mommy, your colors shine too!”
“You may not see me, though I’m still there.
In you, I will shine because you still care!”
Once upon a time there were our colors,
Our colors shone brighter than all others.
Painted in skies after a wrecking storm.
Restoring, once again, a feeling so warm.
* This poem is dedicated to my miracle child, my faded rainbow, my loving angel lost too soon. Further dedication to all the parents who have lost a child and long to find meaning in tragedy. Each and every soul has purpose. Emma’s purpose has now become my own. She will live on and touch many lives.
