Hello! Here is my question: how does deathtouch interact with cards like Cosmic Hunger where target creature I control deals damage equal to its power to another target creature?

Does deathtouch apply I this scenario?

Yes, it does.

All damage dealt to a creature by a source with Deathtouch will count as lethal damage, whether it's combat damage or noncombat damage.

Deck Idea: One Hit Kill

Combining keywords can be fun, and today we’re messing around with a very potent combination.

Keywords: Deathtouch and First Strike

When a creature with both first strike and deathtouch battles another creature, the other creature is usually destroyed before it gets to deal any damage. The creature is virtually unbeatable. of course, there are a lot of ways for an experienced player to break up this combo, but it’s good to let the kids feel like they’ve run into something broken once in a while.

I recommend only letting kids play this deck against adults an not each other, as this deck has the potential to be frustrating to play against for the kids.

Focus Cards: Nightshade Peddler & Hanweir Lancer

We’re using the Soulbond keyword to grant the abilities. these creatures can be paired together to make two death-strikers, or they can be combined with other creatures to make more disposable death-strikers.

We of course can’t rely on always getting both of our Soulbond creatures, so we’re including alternatives, where we can replace one of our soulbond creatures with a regular French Vanilla

If the kids ask why this card is white bordered, you can tell them it’s what they used to do with reprints, but this isn’t something they need to know unless they ask

I’m also including other simple keywords, as well as both high power and high toughness creatures, so the kids can experiment with which combinations works best.

Since we’re granting deathtouch, I’m omitting trample from this deck since the interaction can be confusing.

Deathtouch on Spells

Instants and sorceries that are printed with death touch and then deal damage do not interest me at all. That spell would presumable be black red, which already has terminate, dread bore, and other options that do the same thing and do it more elegantly. It's kind of like lifelink. I don't want to see a spell like lightning helix say "deal 3 damage, lifelink." It would have the same effect in most situations (not all) but it is not the most direct or elegant way to design that card. What I think would be interesting while still being elegant design is a permanent with the ability to give instants and sorceries deathtouch in the same way that soul fire grand master gives instants and sorceries lifelink. When the grand master is on the battlefield he basically turns your lighting bolts into lightning helixes. I think it would be cool to see a sort of dark fire grand master that gives instants and sorceries deathtouch instead of lifelink. It would be a fun and unexpected interaction with a lot of possibilities. Well, mostly just dead creatures, but lots of ways to do it. Arc lightning might be my current favorite option.

If I have a creature with indestructible that takes what would otherwise be lethal damage, and then later in the same turn loses that ability, does it die?

Yes.

Damage stays marked on creatures until the cleanup step. If a creature loses indestructible while having lethal damage already marked on it, it will die the next time state-based actions are checked.

It won’t die if it previously took damage from a source with deathtouch in the turn, though, as the check for deathtouch damage only applies to the next time state-based actions are checked after the damage is dealt.

How do infect and deathtouch interact?

Exactly the same as deathtouch interacts with normal damage.

When a creature with infect deals damage to a creature, you put that many -1/-1 counters on the creature as a result of the damage. This happens as part of the damage being dealt, not instead of it being dealt. If the creature with infect also has deathtouch, then the creature that’s dealt damage will also be destroyed the next time state-based actions are checked.

Hi! I love your blog! Here is the question: If I have Bloodfire Dwarf with deathtouch, lets say i played Coat with venom on him, then I sacrifice him, It's a board clear or nothing happen?

This works exactly how you want it to work.

When Bloodfire Dwarf’s ability resolves, it deals 1 damage to each creature without flying. Since it’s no longer on the battlefield, the game looks at how it last existed on the battlefield and sees that it had deathtouch at that time. The damage is therefore dealt by a source with deathtouch and every creature damaged by the ability will die.

So my friend and I are currently in a clash between the Deathtouch rules. We’re torn between if a ping ability. Say I put a Fire Whip on a Typhoid Rats and tap to ping a Worldspine Wurm. Does it die?

All damage dealt by a source with deathtouch is the same, whether it’s combat damage or not. 

The damage dealt by a Typhoid Rat using the ability granted to it by Fire Whip will be lethal to any creature.
