Xylum Debate Institute 2017!
Xylum Debate Institute will run August 6-20, 2017. Apply here: bit.ly/2hTyz8j
Our unique program pairs immersive critical intellectual history with intensive drills on fundamental argumentation practices. Alums of Xylum have won the Glenbrooks and Berkeley tournaments, Top Speaker at TOC, Semis of TOC and numerous national awards. For more info, please visit: xylumdebate.com
Here’s what students have to say about Xylum Debate Institute:
Looking back at the three weeks that I have spent at Xylum I have came to realize that debate is more than just argumentation, critical knowledge production, and research but debate is also an activity that shapes and molds you as an individual. When we set the competitive aspects aside debate has a life long impact on its participants. I will no longer view the world the same again. – Vernon Johnson, debater at Law Magnet, won two TOC bids after attending Xylum Debate Institute I’ve only begun to notice, but XDI has made me a much better debater. I’ve gotten a speaker award at the last three tournaments I’ve been to and a lot of it has to do with my ability to explain my arguments and use some ethos along with it. — Ezra Louvis, debater at Stuyvesant HS, qualified for the Tournament of Champions after attending Xylum, now debates for Georgetown University My experience at the XDI could not have been rivaled by any other camp. I expected to get better at k debate, and I did, but I also developed a better understanding of who I am as a debater and found a network of amazing and supportive people to count on throughout the year. — Tessa Finley, debater at Denver School for the Arts, whose Xylum 1AC Experiment was published in Jackelope Magazine The dérive was my favorite moment of Xylum because I felt a clear understanding of an argument and how it interacts with your everyday life. — Jeffrey Horn, debater at Green Valley HS, qualified for TOC after attending Xylum Debate Institute

My roommate and I were so dysfunctional at camp.... We broke out lights and had no power for 4.5 weeks, we set off the fire alarm, I had yoga mat in the middle of the floor, my desk was full of random crap, and we woke up earlier than everyone else on our floor
This one guy
Every time I think of him I shiver. He makes me happy even when he is far away. He makes me realize that the future will be okay. He makes me realize there is a future with him and I happy. This guy is going to be a part of my future. I can feel it. One day I hope to let him live the life he deserves. One day I hope to be able to wake up with him in the morning and watch the sun come up. One day I hope he’ll think the same of me. Above all if he’s happy I’ll be okay. Right now being apart isn’t fun, but it’s worth it. Anything is worth it to see his eyes again, to feel his skin again, to smell his scent again. So I’ll wait however long I need to. For this one guy.

Camp
So, I start my first debate camp on Sunday. I will be there 7 days working on policy shit and rooming with my adorable partner. This is only my second year in CX (as well as my last), so I am a bit nervous as to what the competition will be like. Especially considering my partner has been to camp before and I have a bit of experience, leading us to deciding not to go the novice route. Anyone else going to be at ETBU the 12-18?
Xylum Say-Nice-Things Contest #NDCAEdition
As in past years, Xylum is doing a Say-Nice-Things contest to help get the word out about our new location within Michigan Debate Institutes!
*Everyone* who enters, without exception, will receive an update file containing a *brand new* kritik and some helpful 2ac cards -- we will send out the update file before the NDCA. For people already coming to the camp, doing this contest is a no-brainer.
Here’s how it works: to enter the contest all you need to do is make a post on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (the more, the better) and send a *screenshot* of your hype post to [email protected]
That post must include the following:
**The Xylum sign-up link, with instructions to “Check “The Xylum Debate Lab” box. http://michigandebate.com/apps.php
**The dates of the camp, July 12-July 31, 2015 - University of Michigan
** (Optional )The social media account of the camp
Twitter: @xylumdebate
Facebook: Our Group
And we wouldn’t say no to a nice cat/space debate meme, either. Tasteful ASC-II art wouldn’t be out of place. Rock the graphic skills if you got ‘em. And always, please, keep it classy.
The deadline for this contest is April 10, but the sooner the better and you can enter more than once!
*One person* (or, in rare instances, two people) who goes above and beyond the “one-post” entry requirement or produce something aesthetically exceptional will receive the coveted ThunderSquid Award -- a package of awesome critique/culture studies/political science books & Xylum debate swag curated by Xylum staffmembers and mailed to your school or home address.
Past ThunderSquid winners include Ellen Dymit, who distinguished her post via a *limerick*, Jonathan Cook for extended Family Guy meme series, and though not technically done during an award period, Eva/Maya for organizing Xylum dodgeball team at the Glenbrooks & Kassie for making team tshirts #RealMVPs. So, as the ancient proverb goes: say nice things about Xylum before NDCA and all the world shall smile upon you!
