December 11, 2020 - Taylor's album, evermore, was released
"I wanted evermore to represent fall & winter while folklore represents spring & summer. I've always wanted to do a 2part anthology that's a collective body of work & it just kind of happened naturally."
On July 23, 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdowns, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift announced Folklore, her eighth studio album and first surprise release, which she dropped the following day. The album was produced by Swift alongside first-time collaborator Aaron Dessner, long-time partner Jack Antonoff, and her then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Folklore received widespread acclaim and achieved major commercial success, becoming the best-selling album of 2020 and winning Album of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. On November 25, 2020, a concert documentary titled Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions premiered on Disney+. Filmed at Dessner’s Long Pond Studio in New York’s Hudson Valley, the documentary showcased live performances and explored the album's creation.
Following the release of Folklore, Taylor Swift continued collaborating remotely with Aaron Dessner, who sent her instrumental tracks that she then wrote lyrics for. Swift said the overwhelmingly positive response to Folklore motivated her to further explore its musical direction. Their ongoing sessions naturally evolved into a new project that eventually took shape as its own album, Evermore, which Dessner described as a "weird avalanche" stemming from Folklore. Compared to its predecessor, the creation of Evermore was a more experimental and unrestricted process. In an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, Swift described Evermore as bringing her a sense of "quiet conclusion and sort of this weird serenity" following Folklore. She reflected on the thematic differences between the two albums, noting that while Folklore focused on "conflict resolution" and navigating relationships, Evermore delves into various types of endings and the emotional stages that come with them.
On December 10, 2020, just three days before her 31st birthday, Taylor Swift shared a series of nine Instagram photos that, when viewed together, formed an image of her from behind, standing in a forest with her hair in a braid. In a separate announcement across her social media platforms, she revealed that her ninth studio album, Evermore, would be released at midnight. She also unveiled the album’s tracklist and announced that the music video for its opening song, “willow,” would premiere on YouTube alongside the album’s release. Referring to lockdown regulations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Swift wrote: "You've all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I thought I would give you something! I also know this holiday season will be a lonely one for most of us and if there are any of you out there who turn to music to cope with missing loved ones the way I do, this is for you."
