I think the timing’s perfect for a reminder that norse paganism isn’t a closed practice! Please look into it if it interests you, because neither your skin color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or any other personal circumstance prevents you from adopting norse spirituality. So I’ve seen multiple posts on Reddit asking “Can I worship the Gods if I’m ___”. Usually the asker is part of the LGBTQ+ community. I hate that anyone feels the need to ask this. (Part of the reason I ended up drifting away from Heathenry in the past was because I’m black, and didn’t want to screen for Nazis anymore.)

I’m giving my answer here, but I want to make it clear that I’m only speaking for open traditions (Greek, Heathenry, Roman, Egyptian).

YES. THE GODS ARE OKAY WITH IT.

They are our divine parents. They WANT to be worshipped. They love us and want what’s best for us. They won’t care if you’re BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, etc. Disability, mental health status, race, gender, sexuality, and nationality are human concerns—the gods are above that.

Hey, public covens and Pagan-inclusive UU groups! Please make efforts to include:

- MOGAI/QUILTBAG/LBGTQIA+

- The disabled

- People of color

- The impoverished

I've seen covens who only hold their meetings late at night, during working hours, in buildings or locations that aren't easily bus or handicap accessible, those who charge for attending and have been blithely racist in that "I'm totally colorblind, we're all the same race lol!" way.

I do not blame covens who need the money. Renting space can get expensive, especially nowadays. Available space can also be at a premium, especially those willing to allow witches, Pagans or Wiccans to hold their celebrations on their property.

That when it happens, you don't always have the money to bring them to court for discrimination.

But there's ways to include the disadvantaged in your practices!

- Hold a celebration in a city park sometimes if yours is an open practice. - Hold fundraisers instead of pay to pray - Check possible locations for ADA violations and avoid hostile to disabled spaces. - Don't fucking bring the police. They're not our friends. - Listen to people, especially people of color or queer people when they say your behavior is harmful. Do not make excuses, stop, apologize and try to think of what you can do instead. - do your homework about varied practices. - Don't use closed practices, such as voudoun unless you've been initiated and taught by teachers of that practice. It is up to them who they include, not pantheists or Wiccans. - Source your sage from your local tribe in the US or buy a variety of sage other than white sage. - Do research on when the local soup kitchens and shelters do their admittance so someone doesn't have to chose between religion and sheltering safely for the night or eating. - Have some food and drink, potlucks are a fantastic Wiccan tradition by now. - Have a strict policy on not accepting bigotry. Stand by our siblings of color and queer siblings in our practices. Stand by Declaration 127. - Include genderqueer and queer deities/deity pairs for representing the god and goddess in your celebrations.
