Liberation Monologue by Jesika Gonzalez talking about some Dominicans (Dominican Nationalist) who are in denial about history. Basically they are escaping to whiteness because they don’t know who they are. This is especially important for those who insist in the rhetoric created by Trujillo suppressing our African ancestry and changing the narratives round our Arawak Taino history. The Taino committed suicide rather than being enslaved by Spaniards. You have to question the desperation of someone choosing death instead of being brutalized through various violent acts and high levels of subjugation. So no, do not call yourself “Indio” if you don’t understand the fighting spirit of our Taino ancestors. And there are those who would use Enriquillo to say that Native ppl accepted Spanish rule and embrace Spanish domination. Which we would deny is the case.
