Dee Milo’s Red Dress

Dee Milo performed from the 1950s until 1964, when she returned to her hometown of Salt Lake City. When telling the story, she simply says that she felt it was time. She decided on her return to adopt the dominant religion of Utah, and her mother told her that in order to fully repent of her sins, she must burn all of her show memorabilia and gowns, which she did—or so she thought. She bought a house with the money she’d saved from performing, in which she still lives.

Some years later, her ten-year-old daughter found a red gown in a box in the attic and brought it down to Dee to show her how pretty it was. Dee had no idea how it had survived the fire purge, and did not tell her daughter what it was at the time. When she saw it, she saw that there was something of that time and that personality still remaining in her. She had seen Dixie Evans on a talk show describing the striptease reunions and performances that took place at the Exotic World/Burlesque Hall Museum of Fame, and traveled to perform in one, stripping out of that same red dress to screaming audiences. She has, she says, “Come out of her goody-two-shoes-closet,” and is still active at Burlesque Hall of Fame events, performing on Reunion Night, and has served as a judge at the Miss Exotic World Pageant.
