“Lieutenant Whitaker?”
“Corporal.”
“I have another requisition form for you.” She didn’t wait for any conformation, just expecting me to take them.
I read it over and the last known location of the items.
“If I may, Lieutenant— seeing as though, Corporal St. John knows his way around these areas, I’d like to take him with me, ma’am.”
She thinks about it, feeling a deep sense of jealously well up in her chest. “Your request has been denied, Corporal. You will go alone. Follow the map, it’s not that hard.”
I try not to show any annoyance and instead salute in agreement, then walked out the tent without another word.
I roll my eyes and mumble a profanity, as my feet carried me to my bike at the front of the camp.
I began to lift my leg up to mount the bike, only to feel a hand on my shoulder. I’m quick to look up and notice, it’s just Deacon.
“___.”
“Corporal.”
“Oh, please not you too. Don’t call me that, not when it’s just the two of us.”
“Whatever you say, Deek.”
“That’s more like it,” He says setting a hand on the open seat behind me, and comes down to my height. “So, where are you off to?”
“Well, I have to go out and get supplies for.. Lieutenant Whitaker.” Deacon nods and looks at me with sympathetic eyes, feeling as if he is to blame for this.
“I see, do you want me to come with you?”
“I would, but you see… the Lieutenant doesn’t want you coming with me. ‘Says it’s not hard to follow a map.”
He says nothing more, and instead backs away and swinging his leg over his bike. “Deacon…”
He didn’t respond and instead revs his engine. “I’m going with you, and that’s an order, Corporal.”
“You’re so damn stubborn.”
“If it means, I get what I want, then I’ll do it time and time again.”
For @deanobingo and the prompts Iolaus + Deek + Meta
I feel like Young Iolaus and Deek from Doomrunners have a lot in common — besides both being played by Dean O’Gorman. They’re cut from the same cloth so to speak. They could have switched places and their stories would have developed in much the same way.
Deek’s circumstances seem not too far from Iolaus’ before he was caught stealing and was sent to the Academy. Living on the streets, circumventing the law, and putting yourself first, because (they believe) no one else will.
But once they learn to trust others, and realize there are people out there that are willing to care about them — to love them — it quite literary opens up a whole new world to them. A world were family — of your own making — becomes much more important than they could have ever imagined.
They are both stubborn, thrill-seeking, and brave. And though we don’t get to know Deek as well as Iolaus, I have the feeling that they are both fearlessly loyal once that loyalty has had time to put roots. Deek goes after Jada when she is captured even though they decided they shouldn't, just like Iolaus would do for Hercules.
Deek does seem a bit more serious than Iolaus, but he comes from a harsher world where everything is doom and gloom and have probably spent a longer time under these rough, isolating conditions. But given how much he seemed to enjoy messing with the Doomtroopers at the start of the movie I’m sure all he needs is a bit more time to soften that hard shell until he can let his inner prankster out!
Honestly, Deek could be a reincarnation of Iolaus somewhere in the apocalyptic future. But in that case I hope he finds Hercules somewhere in New Eden. ^^

“I really have no clue what I’m doing… How do you work?”
I closed my eyes, leaning my head back against the wall when suddenly, there was a familiar, loud scraping sound then the clatter of Deek dropping his broom. My eyes shot open and I jumped up to find the Room rearranging itself again. The forest vivarium rose and was pushed back to sit between the swamp and beach where that little hall had been, the paintings I'd left back there appearing on the table in front of me. On the now empty wall where the vivarium had been now stood a large portrait of a man and woman who didn't seem to have noticed they were here yet.
“Um… hello sir and madam. Who are you?” I approached the portrait slowly.
The man jumped and looked up to see me, seeming just as shocked as I was. He and the woman stared for a few long moments before he finally spoke.
“By God, it's finally happened.”
“Introduce yourself then dear, you've been waiting centuries for this.”
