Deer Hunt
Judson Jerome
Because the warden is a cousin, my
mountain friends hunt in summer when the deer
cherish each rattler-ridden spring, and I
have waited hours by a pool in fear
that manhood would require that I shoot or that
the steady drip of the hill would dull my ear
to a snake whispering near the log I sat
upon, and listened to the yelping cheer
of dogs and men resounding ridge to ridge.
I flinched at every lonely rifle crack,
my knuckles whitening where I gripped the edge
of age and clung, like retching, sinking back,
then gripping once again the monstrous gun –
since I, to be a man, had taken one.

Bambi was born in April or shortly before April, due to the song ‘Little April Shower’. Because there’s no snow on the ground we can infer that Bambi likely lives in Southern Canada or Northern USA. This means that snow would have first fallen on the ground either the end of October or the beginning of November, and hunting season for deer (at least in Alberta) is November. Bambi, by this time would have been at least six months if he was born in April and the snow fell early in October. Bambi is a white tail deer. By six months, he likely would not have had spots anymore, and by Bambi 2 he definitely wouldn’t have been that small and still had spots and no antlers.
This isn’t important but it had bothered me for the greater half of a decade.
Better now!
