These are my brothers, the only siblings I’ve ever had and will ever have. To the left is my older brother, Jayce, 28, and to the right is my youngest, Rich, 17. Both are harmless, wise, passionate, talented, and character enriched individuals. They are lovers of their families and have always been devoted to being who they are and the best that they can be. Jayce currently has a warrant out for his arrest (I’m not clear on charges) in Houston, Texas, and Rich is a student athlete who is living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My anxiety has never been as evident as it is now, and I don’t necessarily have words to form why it is but please, pray for your black brothers, cousins, fathers, uncles, friends, husbands and boyfriends. No matter where they are, let a prayer for the sparing of their lives be an essential part of your everyday life. My mother is going through emotional and mental turmoil because she hasn’t heard from my oldest brother and because she just doesn’t know what could happen to my younger brother with everything that’s happening in Baton Rouge. I don’t say any of this to ask for sympathy, but to ask for awareness and prayer not only for my brothers but your own and those of others.
