When I read there was going to be a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, I wondered why. The original was released 20 years ago, why bother? Well, the “why” is that the original made $367 million against a budget of $41 million.
The bigger question is “why did they wait so long?”
I came across an article from a few years back where Meryl Streep said they were waiting for a script with a really good idea. I saw TDWP2 this week, and apparently they got tired of waiting. The three stars (Meryl, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt) reportedly have made up to triple their salaries from the first one. That explains the new budget being $100 million.
I wish they had waited for a better script. The plot of TDWP2 feels so generic. And worse, they defanged Streep and Blunt (no one wants to be a villain these days). And Hathaway’s character has become such good-two-shoes, she’s annoying, interfering with other people’s lives.
The best thing I can say is that all three of them look remarkably good 20 years later.
If I’m still around in 20 years, I’ll skip TDWP3.
