REProduce London: Bass Boss (Film) / Koi Hain (Film) / Dushume (Live)
I was delighted to be invited to Play a Dek Bass Noise Set alongside Dhangsha bringing the heat as always.
A bit more about the event below:
Dek Bass is a form of extreme low end frequency deployment originating from rural West Bengal, India. As terrifying as it is wildly popular in the region, the form originated from the mind of one man: DJ Khobir. This event will present Bass Boss, a film on Dek Bass and the imitable agent of its genesis, DJ Khobir. The film will be shown in its entirely for a rare screening as it makes its way around Europe, with director Rana Ghose present and in conversation with Nishant Shukla. curator at Lake. A film collaboration between them, Koi Hain, will also be screened. The evening will flow into live musical performances by London's own Dhangsha and Dushume on Club Sily's bespoke sound system PA.
BASS BOSS
Rana Ghose investigates Dek Bass, a sound system style unique to West Bengal and sets out to meet its elusive leading light DJ Khobir. Overwhelming, aggressive, and prone to virulent fandom in his region, this form of sonic expression and assertion is of its own genesis. There is no reference to Jamaican sound system culture within. It was rendered pure and unadulterated from the mind of one person: DJ Khobir.
कोई है / Koi Hain?! / Is anybody there?! This film follows the intimate, performative rituals of a man offering tears to a river – a gesture of surrender and transcendence, a universal yearning to be seen by something beyond oneself. Referencing the pursuit of ‘Moksha’ – liberation from the cycle of rebirth – Koi Hain?! embodies our shared search for the unattainable.
