what was the best thing in your character’s life?
I wouldn’t say that the best thing in Bucky’s life is a thing. Rather, a person. Rebecca, his younger sister. Bucky was the only child, so of course, he was a bit more spoiled with attention. When he found out he would have a sibling, he was angry... until she was born, and he held her for the first time. And realized, in that moment, that he’s going to do everything and anything to keep his baby sister safe. That he’s going to love her, and protect her from the boys, and help her get out of trouble with mom and dad. And really? That’s exactly how it happened. The two were inseparable growing up. When their parents died, they grew even closer. Realizing that life is a balance that can sometimes tilt, and knock them off their feet. They were too young to have learned this lesson: that in a blink, death can take the very thing you love most. Except, for them, it hadn’t been death that separated the two.
Due to a plethora of different reasons, Bucky was sent to train, and Rebecca was sent to boarding school. Needless to say, they weren’t able to see each other one last time before his initial death. The last thing he had sent her, was a letter. Stating that he intends to come home early, and he’s going to get her out and they’re going to move elsewhere. Start anew, grow up and be the people their parents would have loved to see them become. Their mother, especially, had incredibly high hopes for her two babies.
Luckily, life decided to cut them a break. In 2015, Bucky not only relearned what had happened to his family, but he found out that Rebecca was still alive. She was now Rebecca P. Barnes Proctor. She had not only married, and lived a wonderful life, but she had children. In a way, Bucky wasn’t completely alone in the world. There was still family, he was not only just a brother anymore, but now, he was also an uncle.
Bucky had a decision to make. Either forget that she exists for her own sake, or he could meet her and bring some closure to both their lives. Given how close they were, and how much he loves his baby sister, he winds up make the decision to meet her. From the very beginning, he had expected for the outcome to be bad. But... it wasn’t. Strangely enough, she’d not only recognized him, but she seemed a bit calm. Oh, but he knows her better than that. He could see the plethora of questions that were behind her eyes, and the way she clutched her hands. Ways that she once expressed herself, continued today.
He was able to answer her questions without her uttering a single one. While it was hard to believe, and almost impossible to swallow - she had come to terms that their world was more than a little crazy. The impossible happens daily, now. Gods, monsters, aliens, super soldiers and superheroes of all sorts.
After their first ( and what was supposed to be their last meeting ), Bucky has kept contact contact. Visiting when he can, learning about his nephews and nieces. Learning about her life, and what had happened after he had “died”. And even if it’s been so long, it’s as if time hadn’t taken a toll in their relationship. When he’s with Rebecca, it’s the happiest time of his life. Because HYDRA, for even five minutes, no longer exists. Only their memories, reliving the most memorable times of their lives. And this is why, Rebecca is the best thing in his life.
