Can you spot the American Bittern in the above photos?
I'll give you a moment...
Near Delta Marsh, mid-May 2021.
I actually spotted this guy from the highway and I will never stop bragging about it. (I have terrible eyesight, even with glasses. My partner has disturbingly good eyesight and I still spotted the bittern from the highway before he did! Naner-naner!)
What a smart bird! He tilts his head to the same angle as the cattails! He was holding incredibly still. Unfortunately the setting sun meant all my photos were grainy.
Check out this video of a bittern imitating a puff of grass by wiggling (jump to 3:38)!
We think this might be a female Blackpoll Warbler, but we have no idea. Near Delta Marsh, mid-May 2021.
Yellow Warbler (male) near Delta Marsh, mid-May 2021. What a cutie!
This was my first time seeing yellow warblers! Now that I know who they are, I can't stop seeing and hearing them everywhere. The males are delightfully, unmistakably bright. They have a few brown stripes running down their breast and underparts.
A Song Sparrow near Delta Marsh, mid-May 2021.
I'm not entirely sure who this shorebird is, maybe a Marbled Godwit. Delta Marsh, mid-May 2021.
Palm Warbler near Delta Marsh, mid-May 2021.
This was my first time seeing this bird! What a beauty! He stood quite still for me at the edge of this wooden walkway--but in the shadow, so I had a hard time focusing on him.
This was also my first time at Delta Marsh. My partner said I got out of the truck and looked overwhelmed by all the bird sounds around us. Bird overload.
For some reason this photo I took is getting faves on deviantArt. So I’ll share it here too
