Bittern at the grocery store
Least Bittern (Botaurus exilis), chick, family Ardeidae, order Pelicaniformes, Arizona, USA
photographs by Marcy Starnes
A bittern can assume terrifying positions to ward off predators. Their feet keep them steady while the neck extends to become one of the most horrifying shapes ever seen. Horrifying shapes are known to cause psychological distress and dehydration. This is how they survive so long, and become so long. Always be wary of powerful bitterns because they can poke you , but are too shy. but they could.
the highly camouflaged least bittern 🍂 sat down and painted for the first time in 2 months, it was much needed 5 x 7” acrylic on clayboard
